He should be fired but I doubt they will want to pay him for the next four years. I don’t think his body of work this year is quite as bad as everyone here thinks. It’s bad, but it’s unfortunately not the worst coaching job in the league and the rosters pretty bad. But I don’t think he really has any ability in the future to elevate a team. The defense and defensive secondary in particular being a mess is a really bad look.
Simple question- If God came down from heaven and said “I grant you a Super Bowl winning caliber QB and roster, all you need is for the HC to make the right strategical calls and outcoach the opponents and you will win the SB”…. Do any of you really think Glenn is capable of that? Is there any HC in the league that gives you the feeling that Glenn could outcoach him?
I don't think Glenn is even a below average HC right now, but this organization is a career dead end. Anybody who would settle for this job is going to be just as bad or worse. I do not see a path for the Jets to fire their way into a championship, so it seems reasonable to see if this guy who wants to be here can maybe grow into the job.
We're definitely not a desirable job, and we're never going to get the Ben Johnson-tier coaching candidates, but there are only so many HC jobs available and they pay a lot. We just need to find a young, up and coming offensive-minded guy and sign him before it's obvious to everyone that he's a great candidate. Woody is so dumb though that this is the exact type of guy we never seriously target or hire.
He won't be fired, but it's nearly impossible to make a case for why he shouldn't be. This 2025 New York Jets have been the worst coached team this franchise has had that I can remember.
I don't think you're wrong about that kind of candidate being a better direction for this organization -- I bolded the problem. We don't JUST need one thing, or five things, or a dozen things. We need to do the hard work of fixing this organization, and that's hundreds of things. My take isn't about Glenn, I really don't care when we stop trying to fire our way to the top and treating draft picks like lottery tickets, but we do have to do those two things if we ever want to be worth a shit.
I didn’t see a progressive season. I wasn’t expecting success, just improvement as it went on. If the jets were smart they would use the fact that they have haul of picks to attract the type of coach we really need(not sure who’s gonna be available). I wanted Glenn, and I wanted it to work out. But this ain’t it
Ben Johnson is also a bit of an anomaly of a candidate. Even the hottest coordinators in the league generally don’t turn down offers to stay with their current team like he did a year ago to stay with Detroit. Sean McVay and Shanahan didn’t do anything like that. McVay went to the Rams who were a bottom tier franchise that missed the playoffs 11 straight years. The 49ers had 3 head coaches in 3 years before Shanahan. There are good football coaches out there. We chose a shitty one but I don’t think it’s impossible for us to land a good one.
Oddly enough, I think one issue is that we don't fire guys enough. Woody is always a year too late on firing HCs and GMs and it causes us to waste years of young players' careers and miss out on good coaching candidates. We also don't really treat draft picks as importantly as we should, hence why we win meaningless games every season to torpedo our draft position. This has ripple effects because never drafting the first QB in the draft also makes attracting good coaches more difficult. I know you're technically not allowed to tank, but I'd be shocked if the good owners don't encourage it from time to time. This all starts at the top. Woody has no plan and no ability to think ahead. He's purely reactionary and usually reacts later than he should.
In the 7 years after Manning retired the Broncos had one winning season (and even that was 9-7) and had 6 consecutive losing seasons before going 5-12 in 2022 - they then bring in Payton and they go 8-9; 10-7 and are now 12-3 and they managed to do that without a good QB - why can we never bring in someone like that?
Yep it's always coaching. Look at the Cowboys. McCarthy left and they fell off. You can have all the talent in the world but it comes down to coaching. Perhaps in the past the NFL was more skill based and less about coaching but the rules basically have closed the gap in terms of play style. Therefore coaching is more significant than ever.
Glenn is the wrong coach for this ERA of NFL football. His window was back in the mid 90's, early deuces. His game philosophy is so terribly outdated that this team gets its ass smoked weekly by modern NFL teams. This is not the Parcells, Rex Ryan NFL anymore and hasn't been for a long time. He'll get '26 to turn it around but if next year looks anything like this year, I'd put real money on Glenn getting walked before '27.
He should be fired but I don't think Woody will admit he got it wrong and will be stubborn. Glenn can't coach offense, can't coach defense, isn't involved with either unit, has lost the team basically, acts arrogant but is obviously completely lost. You basically are asking for a miracle turn around from him specifically or he hits the lottery and brings in the right coordinators and they carry him next year
History suggests otherwise. Weeb has our only SB, and he's been gone since 1973. Parcells and Al Groh are the only two with winning records, and they were here a total of 4 seasons. Who was the last coach we hired that was clearly an improvement over the last guy? You could argue for Rex, but that has a lot of strings attached. Do we go back to Parcells for that, too? I would argue that firing HCs and GMs all the time wastes years of young players' careers because they have to learn new systems all the time instead of settling in, then getting moved out to someplace else because they don't fit what the new guy is trying to do, so we end up wasting draft capital on the same positions over and over.
This team definitely can make a case for the worst Jets team ever. Gase has the excuse that his roster was really bad. Glenn? Not so much. It's not a great roster, but the team that he inherited did manage to reach 5 wins last year and went down to the wire in quite a few more, blowing a number of 4th quarter leads. It's not unfathomable to imagine an alternate universe in which that Jets team, without the owner firing the head coach after 5 games and a couple of bounces of the ball going a different way, could at least have been on the "In the Hunt" graphic going into December of last year. The way in which this team has fallen off into the abyss of all-time bad football teams is just unacceptable to the paying customers of this franchise.
I can't agree more. And the best example was Jax. He was so thoroughly outcoached by Coen, it's not even funny. They put up 50 burger, and Lawrence actually missed a couple of easy TDs. If Coen had in his contract that he gets a big bonus if he puts up 70, I think he could do it fairly easily. The coaching discrepancy in schematics, Xs and Os is just so vast. It's just too bad Woody is such imbecile, it's just so obvious he needs to make a change, but he is simply too stupid to see it. Also, agree with @REVISion, he is not firing people fast enough and it is arguably the worst Jets team of all time. It's not that hard to tell after a whole year if the guy is wrong for the job. I mean if historically bad season is not enough to give Woody a clue, nothing is.
