I feel like this isn't an accurate representation of how the QB decision went down. This was always a bridge/rebuild year. They wanted to take a shot on a guy that clearly has talent. They signed him to a glorified one year deal that gives you an out in year 2. I don't think you show that little confidence financially in someone you think you're going to turn around. It was an experiment. It failed. That was always an option and I'm pretty sure the coaching staff knew that. I've said it in other threads before... I care WAY less about who the head coach is and way more about who his offensive staff is. Engstrand is a football junkie and clearly understands the game when you watch the tape (sans the Hall/targets thing which is just weird at this point). If this was a Gase or Hackett offense where we looked like a mess AND the tape looked like a mess, I'd be concerned. But the likely truth is that with even an average QB we're an average offense this year, let alone next year when we add pieces.
How does Fields have talent? He can't pass, the most important thing for a QB to be good at by a mile. I don't care how fast he runs the 40, it's meaningless when you can't pass at all. This is who Fields has been his entire career. Thinking he'd turn it around with us never made any sense and shows a lot of arrogance from Glenn. I understand the bridge QB thing but there were better options than Fields if that's what they were trying to do.
I agree Cman. I was checking my eyelids for leaks by Halftime. Can't get this season over fast enough. I'll be selling my PSLs after the Draft. Anyone interested? I'll make you a good deal. Think of all the time and money wasted on this turd of a team. Think of all the fishing gear, charters, and availability for fishing invites!!!
I really don't understand the arrogance thing at all. It was a one year deal. It was the same thing we'd do with any other turd. Also the Steelers wanted Fields back on a lower deal and not as a starter but they saw something that said hey we should keep trying. And by the way, I never ever wanted Fields so I'm not even saying I agreed with it, I'm saying I understood the plan. And yea other guys could have been better but who was signing here? We have no clue. They have to want to be here as much as we want them here.
Is it? Post 6/1 cut we have a $13 mil cap hit in 2026 and we save $10 mil. We have close to $100 mil in cap space and we'd get even more by cutting him. We can eat that money easily. Im going to assume that's not a mistake. It was structured to where you can get rid of him if he sucks and if he shows signs, you have him under contract. Can't reiterate enough how much I hated this path, but I also GET it.
I've gravitated to a modified version of this over the years....no longer a die-hard Jets fan that misses families events just to watch the Jets lose on Sunday afternoons. I no longer stand at the bar watching the Jets lose while the fam is sitting behind me somewhere in the restaurant. No more getting super angry when some moron plans a big event for Sunday afternoon DURING FOOTBALL SEASON!!! No more missing dog walks, cancer walks, kids sporting events. No more getting super mad when someone txts "hahahah Jets Suck!" when they know I was traveling and DVRing the game to watch later. Now, if the Jets make the SB, I'd sit alone in my man cave, lights off, phone off, curtains closed, alone with my thoughts, hoping for the best, but fully prepared the worse.
The arrogance thing stems from Glenn saying Fields was a good QB who was just never coached correctly. Glenn thought he could do something no other coach did. Fields specifically said that he signed with us because no other team wanted him as a starter. We fell for it when no one else did.

Hey, during your boycott, don't forget to get those Game Threads up! Sorry, I just had to give you a small hard time. LOL!!! Did you see my post in the Coach Thread pinned at the top? Go read, then, after you climb off the ledge I'd LOVE to hear what you have to think on THAT one!
When did Glenn say he was never coached correctly? I'm being genuine. I have no recollection of that at all but I could be completely wrong.
Before the season he said that in multiple interviews, he acted like it was the previous coaches faults. Tomlin is such a worse coach then Glenn lol.
You know, it’s interesting…to me this is very much like my criticism of JD….and here’s what I mean. With JD, I feel like he had the right strategy on how to build a team…he understood the positions that were important enough to justify high draft picks, namely QB, OL, WR, Edge, and CB. He said time and again that he wanted to build from the trenches. I agree with this plan. Where he fucked up royally is in his ability to actually draft good players at those spots. He hit it big the one year but he failed overall in bringing in offensive talent…he did better on D. I think the D looked better partly because we had a defensive HC who understood that side of the ball way better than he understood the offense. And then of course Zach was terrible. I see the same in AG in this case of Fields. I like the strategy, and I get it. Sign a bridge QB, not a huge investment, and build the rest of the team and then go get a real QB in the draft. Strategically, it makes sense. Where he absolutely failed is in his evaluation of Fields. Look, who am I? I’m not an NFL coach or scout or exec, but even I could see, without having access to the player or to all the film, that Fields was utter shit. He was NEVER going to develop. He can’t do the basic QB stuff. He’s been this guy his whole career… I did not want to hire AG even though I loved him as a player here…I didn’t think he was any kind of driving force for Detroit’s success…that was all offense. And I absolutely think we needed to bring in an offensive guy as we’ve had piss poor offenses for decades here. So I blame AG for all of this…he owns it. He owns the shit QB play with his bonehead talk track defending Fields, he owns the decision to bring him in in the first place, he owns the decision to keep trotting his ass out there, and he owns the absolute shit defense with 1 takeaway through 10 games. All of it. He needs to go, and I don’t need to see another 2 years to figure that out.
Dont blame you Cman, they are miserable to watch. Don't ruin your days with their games right now. They are going to have some flashes as a team but Fields has peaked and his peak is what he was as a rookie week 1. He is just not good at this level to be a regular qb
Pain, huh. You forgot the capitalize it: PAIN. Anyway, I'm kind of a wordy person, and I have good news for anyone who may, in a highly agitated state, typo the word pain as pian. Pian is Yaws or "the yaws", which is a highly contagious tropical disease which causes raised, red, sores that resemble raspberries. The grammar police will never pull anyone over for that one, so happy sausage fingers at the keyboard on this inglorious Friday, Jets fans!
It's definitely funny (no sarcasm), funny like some jackass taking a selfie while experiencing altitude sickness on Mt. Kilimanjaro and plummeting to their death kind of funny.
I just can’t get this worked up over a one year bridge quarterback that flopped terribly. It’s not over arching commentary on Aaron Glenn as a coach or talent evaluator big picture. Yeah he hired Steve Wilks and I’m sure a lot of that has to do with the fact Glenn is a first time head coach and he wants someone with experience as one of his coordinators considering the other two were rookies. Oddly enough it’s the other two that are completely out shining the former coach. Look back at the Lions… After the first year Dan Campbell fired the offensive coordinator who was also a former head coach kept on to help steer the ship. Have to hope that happens here as well with Wilks.
I have to agree on Darnold. It always blows me away when these supposed Professional Coaches do something stupid like this. You NEVER let the known quantity walk out the door BEFORE you understand what you have. They let a guy that "lit it up" walk for a kid on potential. That will get your ass fired in a NY Minute every day of the week. It is, literally, the same argument to be said for the trade of our top players for draft picks. Love em' or hate em', we knew what we had in Q and Sauce. These draft picks could ALL turn out to be turds. Yeah, some of those picks could turn out to be good to phenomenal. The question is, are they willing to stake their jobs on it. I guess the short answer, for now, is "yes."
