I think Simpson’s tape looks a lot like Bryce Young. Accurate thrower, good pocket presence and escapability at the college ranks but probably has too much of a noodle arm to be interested in him at this point.

I’m really starting to think none of these guys are worth a top ten pick and the Jets should take a crack at a second round QB while signing a stopgap somehow.

Still think Moore and Sellers go back to school. Simpson comes out because he sees the gap in top end QB’s coming out and ends up falling a lot in the draft.

You left off Lamar Jackson. He's better than everyone on your list besides Mahomes.

From your list (or should be list) Jackson, Mahomes, Love, Allen, Maye, and Mayfield (to a less extent), are all excellent athletes. "dual threat" if you prefer the term

Herbert leads the NFL in QB scramble yards this year.

I wouldn’t put Baker in the excellent athletes category but the guy figures out a way to scramble for big first downs.

good points. Mayfield is a tough guy to peg. A throwback almost. I never thought he'd be this good, I thought he'd have a lot of passes batted down at the line which he doesnt seem to

could stay put and draft a receiver. Jordyn Tyson and Garrett Wilson would be a good combo and then grab a QB in the second round.

Adding Jackson to the list doesn't change the overall point at all. Most of the guys, by far, are still not "dual threat" QBs.

Dual threat and being a good athlete are completely different things. I was responding to a post about dual threat QBs. Justin Herbert is a good athlete. Is he a dual threat QB? He's averaged 17 rushing yards per game over his career.

Yeah but what’s that matter? I don’t think you need to be a dual threat or anyone is saying we need to get a QB that can run the read option.

But the only true limited athleticism statues left in the game are Stafford and Goff really. Love, Darnold, Dak don’t really run that much but they’re capable athletically.

I think the overriding point is about how Mendoza seems to have very limited upside athletically (including arm talent to be honest) and the question is do we think you can take a guy like that and see him turn into a franchise QB with a top 5 pick.

Offensive lines are just worse than they used to be. They have to pass block for a lot less time in college due to all the quick throws so the pressure gets to them quicker and the QB’s need to be able to move to avoid the pressure.

threat is the key word there. Obviously these guys aren't logging 25 carries a game, they would be running backs. Is Herbert a "threat" with his arm and legs? He was off my list by the way but JV showed that he is

jackson, mahomes, maye, allen, hurts, daniels, they are all threats with their arms and legs for sure. "dual threats" if you will

You lost me at “Mahomes isn’t a dual threat QB.” He was leading the league in QB rushing most of this year. Look at how often he runs in the playoffs and what it does for the game. All of the QBs you listed except for Goff have a run threat to their game.

its funny because Dak Prescott was a running QB at Mississippi State. He's a guy that got pegged as a runner and not a passer and as such fell in the draft. He was seen as a Dan Mullen runner. Now, yeah, he completely plays from the pocket. But obviously he is athletic

Dak was pre-transfer portal, pre-NIL. In today's environment he transfers from Mississippi State his senior year to an air raid offense, a team with top resources ($$) in their conference. And becomes the number 1 overall pick haha. Which is what Sellers might do :(

I always liked Mayfield and I was in the minority when he was being drafted to come to the Jets
And everyone here pegged him as a “midget”. Now all he does is find ways to win games
    Lmao

I would rather have David the winner than Goliath the flop

    Meh…I don’t think so

The list of really good 2nd round QBs isn’t all that long, is it?

Drew Brees for sure, Jalen Hurts, a few maybe but not many.

Or to look at it another way, of the 32 2025 starters, 26 were first rounders…

The odds of finding a starting QB after the first round are pretty damn low, and more specifically, WE haven’t been able to do it like ever.

So yah, taking a QB in the second round doesn’t excite me as I can almost guarantee he will not develop into a great QB for us. Period.

    - AFC East: 4 first rounders
    Buf: Allen
    NE: Maye
    Mia: Tua
    NYJ: Fields

    - AFC North: 3 first rounders and one 3rd rounder
    Pitt: Rodgers
    Cin: Burrow/Flacco
    Balt: Jackson
    Cle: Gabriel (3rd)

    - AFC South: 4 first rounders
    Ind: Jones
    Jac: Lawrence
    Hou: Stroud
    Tenn: Ward

    - AFC West: 3 first rounders and a 2nd rounder
    Den: Nix
    LAC: Herbert
    KC: Mahomes
    LV: Smith (2nd)

    - NFC East: 2 first rounders, a 2nd rounder, and a 4th rounder
    Phil: Hurts (2nd)
    Dal: Prescott (4th)
    Wash: Daniel’s
    NYG: Dart

    - NFC North: 4 first rounders
    GB: Love
    Det: Goff
    Min: McCarthy
    Chi: Williams

    - NFC South: 3 first rounders and a 5th/2nd for NO
    TB: Mayfield
    Atl: Penix
    Car: Young
NO: Rattler (5th) or Slough (2nd)

    - NFC West: 3 first rounders and a 7th
    SF: Purdy (7th)
    Ari: Murray
    LAR: Stafford
    Sea: Darnold

I agree that a minimum level of athleticism is desirable (Darnold and Dak for example). I just think athleticism beyond that is overrated for QBs and often an actual detriment due to tendency to rely on athleticism over passing. No comment on Mendoza other than I agree he has a weak arm.

Re: why it matters, I was responding to this, which claimed that most of the best QBs today are dual threat QBs:

That's just not remotely true. There are like 10 QBs with more rushing yards per game than Mahomes this year. He's averaged 20 rushing yards per game over his career. That's like 2 scrambles per game and the Chiefs aren't designing many Mahomes running plays.

I agree that a minimum level of athleticism like Mahomes has is good. I am saying that athleticism beyond that is often harmful for a QB's ability to pass because they rely on running too much.

My overarching point though, what started this whole conversation, is that I'm always wary of QBs where the main selling points are athleticism-based. Passing is just much more important.

all you gotta do is watch ONE Patrick Mahomes game and you'll see citing his rushing stats in a discussion about his athleticism is just plain silly

the guy runs all over the place, stops, starts, jukes defenders, and launches it 20-30 yards downfield. multiple times per game.

    ---
mahomes has never ever been a 2 steps back, get the ball out QB. he's not a "processor" his athleticism is what makes him great. the play is never over, never dead, because of what he can do with his legs and his rocket arm

honestly I used to think like REVISion. When Mahomes came out, I was negative on how he would do in the NFL because I was used to seeing guys like Manning and Brady and Flacco and Bledsoe, etc. do all their damage without seemingly ever even moving an inch.

I was dead wrong on Mahomes and now all the GOOD QBs look more like Mahomes than they do Brady or Manning. Being athletic is vital to a QB's success these days and every year its proving itself, with Daniels last year and Dart this year.

Thanks to YouTube I've been able to go back now and take a look at this Mendoza kid. He's not worth a top 10 pick. I'd debate him even being 1st round worthy, to be honest. In fact, the talking point that this QB class would be the best in decades has most assuredly been flushed down the toilet. If Mendoza is the top of the heap, up to now that is, then not only is this not a generational QB class, it may not have a 1st round QB talent in there. Sick of teams taking a player way too high "just because" they are the top QB or whatever in the class. It puts unnecessary and undue pressure on both the player and the organization. Who needs that?

Also, Favre and Rodgers were BOTH 1st ballot HoF LOCKS when they showed up. Both with only a couple years left in them. A good QB who is in his prime and expects to play another 10 or 15 years is NOT going to come to this team with this reputation of horrid offense and losing. You know how I know this? Because NO ONE ever has.

Mahomes is the kind of QB that REQUIRES the type of coach that let's him be who he is. So many of these coaches are so hell bent on pigeon holing whatever QB into "their" system that it's a laugh when these kids go on to other teams and light it up. It really is mind blowing how often this happens. I'm telling you, Patrick Mahomes would be out of the league if he had been drafted by a team like the Jets.

Pretty overwhelming evidence that in the situation we are in, there is almost no point to select someone beyond the 1st round. That would be just a waste of a pick. We either take a QB with our 1st round pick, or if there is a 1st round QB we like who is still available later in the round, come up from round 2, like the Giants did last year.

Btw, here is some all 22 on Mendoza from last year. Check at 5:15, where I time marked. This guy claims while not Patrick Mahomes, he is not a Goff/Cousins statue either. The all 22 Film seems to support as well as rushing stats this year. @Jonathan_Vilma @BrowningNagle @Sundayjack Is that analysis way off?

He’s not quite a statue but I think his arm is too limited and combine that with ok at best athleticism makes him a pass for me.

Kurtis Rourke didn’t throw for as many TD’s last year as Mendoza will this year but he averaged more yards/game, and around the same yards/average and yards/catch as Mendoza. I don’t have any stats to back it up but I felt like Rourke threw the ball down field a lot more too. Mendoza throws a lot of WR screens it seems like this year.

Can someone please put me out of my misery and tell me we are NOT going to waste a high 1st round pick on ANY of these QB's? Please?

I have HAD it with this team pissing away a top pick on a dude that should have been a second rounder or later. You do not not not not not take a fucking QB in the first round just BECAUSE he might be the best QB of a shit QB class. I'd rather have an edge or WR, if there are any. Period. You do NOT take a position that is going to result in a 5 yr. $200 million contract "just because" that's the going rate 4 years down the road when it's time to re-up.
