Used to be an easy question to answer. I think he'd be a better player with another of college. But after three years of college, two schools, and with a bunch of names poised to enter the discussion next year, if he's even rumored to be a first round pick, I doubt he stays. Fun fact to reveal your age: sitting behind Moore on the Oregon QB depth chart - Akili Smith Jr. I hope for Dante's sake they don't ever share water bottles.
That's my biggest concern. I don't discount how there are middle-tier QBs that suddenly blossom in the NFL. Truth is, NFL teams are just lousy at guessing which great college QBs will also have solid NFL careers, and they're so desperate for a QB they'll overvalue David Carr and not even consider Julius Peppers - a guy everyone knew was the best player in the draft. Or, worse, when there's no clear QB1, they'll try to convince us all they have some genius formula for why Mitch Trubisky is a safer pick than Patrick Mahomes. My opinion - as of today, the safest picks with the highest value this year are on defense. On offense, the safest picks are probably OL. Unless one QB starts rising out of the pack, using a top-5 pick on one of these guys is wasting the value of that pick. I'd rather trade down for value and try to angle for the guy you grade highest (rightly or wrongly) in a later slot. Or, hell, I'd take Rueben Bain, Jr. or Caleb Downs plus Rocco Becht in Rounds 2-3 in a blink.
I think people might riot if the Jets take a safety with a top 2,3 4 pick. But damn is Downs good and damn do the Jets need safety help.
Yeah, I was thinking that as I was typing. I actually think he's a safer pick than Bain. Value-wise, picking a safety that high seems like wasting value too. Unless he's hands-down the next Ed Reed. Who I'm pretty sure was a late first round pick himself.
maybe cause the Jets have been terrible either way but lately I've cared less about "value" from the draft gurus. Kind of seems like a faked up thing anyway. I would be happy to see Downs here just because he looks like an awesome football player and we have very few of those
It doesn't matter who the team drafts if the coaching doesn't improve, whether it's with the current staff or a new staff.
I think we learn a lot more about Nussmeier and Sellers than we do Moore and Mendoza. I think Oregon rolls Indiana and Mendoza might pickup some stuff in garbage time that’s meaningless. Meanwhile Moore will continue to stand behind his wall. SC/LSU should be really competitive. LSU’s defense is really good and SC’s is formidable. Not much of a running game for either QB so it’s all on them. One more - Jayden Maiava (USC) vs. Michigan’s defense albeit at home. Keeping my eye on Becht & Brendan Sorsby too. All the two keep doing is light defenses up and win games.
You know...there is actually a not small 49'er contingent that think he blows. Boggles my mind. The minute the team loses one or two in a row, he's lost the team, he's over the hill, the players have checked out. My god, last year...it was insane. Actually, kind of sounded like Jets fans. Only difference is "we" do that no matter who it is, how long they've been here on and on... In fact, when I read their posts they ALL sound like they belong on TGG. Very strange. Hell, I'd give my left nut to have a coach like Tomlin. BOTH for a coach like Shanahan! These other fan bases have NO IDEA how good they got it.
Or basically and for a more recent example...if/when we find ourselves in the same relative position Tennessee did this past draft you have to hope *we* have it in us to make a different final evaluation decision. One that leans a lot more into the BPA values involved then the hype machine BS. As it stands right now I have a hard time seeing the logic in drafting any of these QB over Bain Jr (granted I am kinda of a Miami fanboy. Just one who also had his strong doubts on Cam's NFL prospects). Which is a stance i fully expect to find myself vehemently arguing against the much larger opposing majority on when the time comes for that to dominate 90% of the football discussion.
I was reading up on Maiava and watched the USC-Illinois replay. He’s starting to get more attention. You and someone else in this thread were on him early. Looks really poised. Good size. Pretty decent arm. Not highly rated coming out of high school, but Luke Altmyer was, and between the two of them Maiava hands-down looked like the better QB. Good game. Even with Gus Johnson screaming nonstop nonsense at me. I also didn’t realize he started as a freshman at UNLV and his leaving is what started all that Matthew Sluka bullshit. For a true freshman, he put up pretty good numbers. Which led me to watch his 2023 bowl game against Kansas. Not bad. Nothing spectacular, until you remember he was a true freshman and kept it competitive, with Jason Bean on the other side of the ball putting up 450 yards and six TDs. I’ll be on a different game and probably won’t see much of Michigan-USC, but definitely one I’ll catch up on during the week.
Lincoln Riley obviously knows how to develop and prepare quarterbacks to play in the NFL too. From Baker to Kyler to Caleb. He also has the clout and USC has the resources to go get QB’s that they want in the portal. I think it says a lot that they stuck with a guy they only saw start 4 games for them. If he stays healthy and comes out he might be the guy with the most starting experience outside of Becht. He just looks big on the field to me too. Not necessarily in height but stature. Broad shoulders and all.
If we draft Becht can he please wear number 88 like his dad did as a Jet? #88 for a QB would be cool as shit
