No surprises to start NY Jets camp. Just helmets, but Glenn’s first moments at camp feature an uptempo, efficient look. Much like OTAs, there’s little wasted time. It’s easy to not notice it, but it’s purposefully efficient and fast-paced within each positional, especially the OL. They’re certainly not skimping on the basics, either (a lot of stuff players wouldn’t deem as even “slightly enjoyable”). (Sabo) Quiet start to training camp. Working a lot on technique and positional drills to start the day. Very similar to OTAs and minicamp to open practice No. 1 #Jets (Long)
First pass of camp: Justin Fields to Breece Hall out of the backfield. (Rosenblatt) To open teams Breece Hall rips off a nice YAC play on a short reception #Jets (Long)
Next play, Hall uses his shiftiness to get to the outside and shed one level of tackles. #Jets (Long) Braelon Allen is going to have a big year. Great job at hitting the hole hard with great vision to open camp #Jets (Long)
Fields takes his time in the pocket before throwing a pass well behind Allen Lazard about 15 yards downfield. #Jets (Long) This is what fans want to see. Justin Fields threads the needle 20 yards downfield right to Garrett Wilson for a touchdown. Solid start for Fields. #Jets (Long) After a bad throw to start, Justin Fields connects deep with GW for what would have been a TD. Would have been a breakdown in coverage between the safety room. #Jets (Faria) Justin Fields finds a wide open Garrett Wilson for a deep TD on the fifth play of camp. The flip side is the defense busted their coverage. (Costello) On his third pass during 11-on-11 drills, Justin Fields completed a beautiful deep pass to Garrett Wilson that was about 30-plus yards. #Jets (Antwan Staley)
Justin Fields was under pressure, might’ve been sacked by Micheal Clemons, and then missed Garrett Wilson down the field on his second passing attempt. (Rosenblatt) Justin Fields followed this up with a perfect pass, with good timing and patience, deep down the field to Garrett Wilson for a huge completion. Nice bounce back. (Rosenblatt)
Justin Fields first series: Completes 2 of 3, hitting a wide-open Garrett Wilson on a long corner route. Missed Wilson earlier on a deep over. Fields looking for big chunks. #Jets (Cimini)
First team session notes: —Fields finds GW5 for a 50+ yard vertical on a concept that was perfect for the coverage. Could/would the FS have ranged a bit further to that side? Maybe, but still a tough ask. —Previously, Fields put forth an ugly one, GW5 target soft spot, overthrew, not sure what happened there. Eyes must have started in a diff spot, just late, timing not right from QB scanning field perspective. —Rush game = as crisp as can be without full pads. Olu did a job on Clemons on one of them. —Engstrand and Glenn are gonna love Braelon; he hits the hole with authority, doesn’t mess around; need that in this type of offense. —First play was a Breece completion, secondary; would have loved to see Fields hit GW5 on the vertical, but he opted safer with Breece. No great criticism with this one, but he had more if he wanted it. Again, it was a familiar, QB-friendly concept that Jets fans are going to see a lot this year. (Sabo)
Jamal Pritchett just made a really nice diving catch so close out the first portion of team drills. Continues to get open at a high clip. #Jets (Faria)
Tyrod Taylor beautiful bullet pass about five yards downfield to Tyler Johnson right in stride. #Jets (Long) Brady Cook now in for 11-11 drills. A little short about 20 yards downfield to Jamaal Pritchett but the South Alabama product gets to his knees to haul it in #Jets (Long) Takeaways from first session of 11 vs 11 drills #Jets -Fields looked comfortable in the pocket and went 2/3 while hitting GW 30-plus yards downfield for a touchdown -Braelon Allen is going to fit in beautifully with Justin Fields on read-options. His great vision and ability to hit the hole with all of his power is such a special ability. (Long)
Now we have special teams drills. Xavier Gipson drops a punt right in his chest to open up ST drills. #Jets (Long)
Garrett Wilson just mossed Brandon Stephens in 7-n-7. Just absurd. #Jets (Faria) *I hope the official account posts the video of this later today* In fairness to Stephens, he had perfect coverage. Wilson just made a “I’m a top-paid WR” kind of catch. #Jets (Faria)
First set of reps for the first team was a mixed bag to say the least. Fields’ touchdown to Wilson was great, but he also missed him on a crosser, and had a bizarre read on the play before where it looked like there was a miscommunication. Part of the development process in this new offense. #Jets (Faria)
Arian Smith with a nice in-route against zone. Think Fields needs to be quicker with his reads but an overall solid few 7v7 reps. #Jets
Josh Reynolds gets involved hauling in his first reception of the day from Justin Fields. Great start for Fields, 3/4 to open the day #Jets (Long)
7v7, first play is a Fields-GW chunk for 30+ working against Stephen’s near sideline, where GW played it perfectly. Nicely placed, but Garrett didn’t give away the target until the last moment. Had he done so earlier, Stephen’s may have gotten the head around or hand in there earlier. Waited to get the hands up, Oscar-worthy. Two more nice Fields completions followed: A beauty to GW, MOF, intermediate, and an easier completion to Arian. The key: Neither was the primary. The GW one had me antsy, thinking he held onto the ball for too long, but he got off the primary to hit GW at the last moment. Quicker progression with the Arian one. Yes, 7v7 = a MUCH easier time for the passing game, but it’s tough to nitpick what we just saw. (Sabo)
