Per a billion people on Twitter like 20 mins ago... wake up TGG! A franchise cornerstone signed a longterm deal with us for fair money.
Curious to see the guarantees breakdown. Honestly not a fan on the surface of paying out top of the market money, on a non-top of the league WR, with there still being a massive question mark at QB. Or whether this team is actually even going to be any good any time soon.
You either pay him or we’re back to David Nelson’s as being a huge offseason pickup. There’s no in between especially with this absolute garbage receiving group.
At some point you HAVE to pay at least some of the homegrown talent? With a decent offense around him can you imagine how GOOD Wilson will be when he's got a decent offense around him and he's not being ignored by Rodgers, post Adams? This FINALLY sends a positive message.
Bingo. And his extension doesn't kick in until after his two remaining years based off what I'm seeing on Twitter. You make this deal 10 times out of 10.
In two years when the extension kicks in he'll probably be paid in the top 10 of WRs and unless he gets worse, he'll be a top 10 WR.
Yeah i get that. But I also believe that this team isn't doing much winning this season with or without Garrett Wilson regardless. I don't hate it, and I like it more then other positional WR overpays (imo) with no surrounding health question marks and him only turning 25 next week. But...this just has a putting the cart before the horse type of roster building spend feel to it. Where i might of ended up being more enticed by stockpiling more premium future picks.
Congrats to GW. I like Garrett Wilson a lot but you give that extension to a guy with 14 career TDs (yeah I know the QBs but still) then you need to start seeing better numbers soon.
Signing a top tier franchise cornerstone who is 25 years old and could get the same money (if not more) elsewhere next year is absolutely the horse, not the cart.
Couldn’t disagree with this take any more This is the kind of thinking that makes sure you never have a team…at some point, when you hit on a draft pick, you have to keep them in the building. You have to reward home grown talent and you have to start stacking the building blocks. The main block is the QB, then the OL, then you get into the next tier of positions like WR, CB, DE. We have a stud. We need to keep that stud. We couldn’t do much about the QB building blocks this year…Fields was likely the best option out of a bunch of not so great options, so either he develops this year or we go get a QB next year. We did take care of the OL and we have 4 young guys who were high draft picks so the assumption is we have the OL set now. So GW and Sauce are the next steps. If you keep waiting for the “horse before the cart” as you say, you’ll never sign anyone… I am over the moon on this deal…especially as these salaries only go up. It will only get more expensive.
This right here. If the team were to wait another year or two to "see" what G.W. does with better QB/Offensive play, that reasonable signing will look more like $30 mill per the way these salaries are skyrocketing. I read somewhere that the CAP will go up HUGE the couple of years. I suspect, by being a little early, the team saved a bit on the money side and gained a huge chunk of good will for the new regime. Not paying the homegrown talent has been a general problem for the Jets for a while.
