Nnadi is not a scrub. Good role player for the Chiefs and will be one here too. Squatty, hard to move, and very durable which is kinda all you want from a DT role player

Texans and Stingley just reset the CB market. 3/90 with basically all of it guaranteed. I’m glad we waited until the cornerback and wide receiver markets exploded before locking up our star wide receiver and cornerback.

And no you don’t let one of the best man cornerbacks in the entire league walk when you are going to be running a man defense for the foreseeable future.

Stingley is better than Sauce Gardner though.

And I'm not sure your last statement is true. I'm open to extending Gardner but I do want to see how he is in a predominantly man defense. I think he has the pieces there, but he is still a question mark in terms of man coverage. He is grabby and could see an increase in penalties.

if he proves me wrong there I'd be very happy and open to an extension, I think you let this season play out with him and see

this is a good note about Stephens from Cimini:

"A former GM, who has studied him closely, said Stephens "can't find the ball and people went after him." In fact, he had no interceptions despite being targeted 98 times as the nearest defender, the fifth-highest total in the league, per Next Gen Stats. He allowed 63 receptions for 858 yards and four touchdowns -- bloated numbers for a corner.

But here's the weird thing, nearly 34% of his targets were tight-window throws (less than one yard separation), eighth highest (minimum: 250 coverage snaps). That stat suggests good coverage, but it supports the premise that he's lacking in ball skills."

New Jets QB Justin Fields reuniting with WR Garrett Wilson - ESPN

    ---

Stephens is relatively new to the position, I think he was a running back in college so it makes sense that he would struggle with finding the ball.

you have a defensive back as Head Coach and a defensive back as Coordinator. If anyone can coach him up to find the ball its Glenn and Wilks

I know it feels that way, but Mooge is not late. These top of the market negotiations are always going in parallel and the agents are aware of one another. That helps drive the price up. It's the same cycle - 1 year earlier than normal. Besides two years ago Q got 24 mil. Prices are going up, 30 mil is where it was going to end up this year either way for a premium position defensive player. The guaranteed part is a little higher but not by much, 99% guaranteed 3 years, while Q got 92% of 3 years guaranteed.

The biggest difference is 4th year team option that we got on Q for the same price as 3 previous years, which Texans do not have. Maybe Mooge is trying to get the 4th year team option, while Texans folded first, agreed without it and set the market. But I definitely do not think Sauce would agree for much less than 30 annually as that feels like a ballpark of a fair price now. And same is true for GW. I just think these are the prices now, and there was no opportunity to get them for less, so I doubt Mooge is late. He will be late if he does not extend this offseason.

I also hope he somehow gets that 4th year option, but it will be very hard to do. Not because he is late (he is not), but because that could be the market now as Texans conceded that point.

I don't think we could have had Sauce or GW for cheaper than $30 mil, but when you have someone resetting the market at $30 mil at CB it's going to make negotiations way harder. And again you absolutely do not let Sauce walk or trade him if you want to be taken seriously as a front office. What message would that send? Come here, be all-pro, don't get extended when you deserve it and the market calls for it, then get traded. That's not what you do when you're first off, trying to rebuild and second trying to establish a respectable culture. Now if he totally bombs in this new scheme (doubt he will), then yea, you move on and you always have the "he's a zone guy, we're a man team" thing to fall back on.

As for Garrett who the hell knows. The WR market is consistently insane. I guess it depends on how much higher he values himself than Tee Higgins (and he is much more valuable). We weren't going to get him for cheaper than $30 mil but this makes it a whole lot harder.

And one more thing, check this from Sauce: https://x.com/iamSauceGardner/status/1895579818516939259

"the fact that the 5th year option for corners with 2 or more Pro Bowls is only $20M compared to other positions is actually crazy considering it being the hardest position in football lol"

He was complaining that 5th year option on a ROOKIE DEAL for him was "only" $20 mil. There was simply no chance in hell Sauce was going to agree to much less than 30 on the extension early. He is not stupid. Let's see what Mooge can do, maybe he can do a little better even by getting a 4th year or something, but he is certainly not late to anything. He will be late if he cannot agree on the extension this year though. But let's not shit on the guy for nothing just yet.

Every team in the league seems to find a way to keep their good players except the Jets. The Browns sunk an unbelievable amount of guaranteed money in the worst contract in NFL history for a guy who now won’t play for two years yet they just re-signed Myles Garrett to a record breaking deal.

I’m pretty tired of watching former Jets succeed elsewhere.

This. Everyone in the world can say "the cap isn't real" except the Jets. I will say I fully expected Sherwood to walk because we were gonna pull a Douglas/Idzik and have a price tag in mind that we won't go over. So SLIGHT glimmer of hope in my mind but I won't feel good until pen hits paper.

I also can't fathom the mindset of "let XXXX walk we can replace him". That VERY rarely works and almost never works for the Jets. At some point we have to operate like the rest of the league.

Absolutely, if Mooge does not extend Sauce and GW before next offseason, I will be the 1st one to shit on him. But we are not there yet. It's not late. In fact I would argue Texans did it too early and fucked up by not getting 4th year option. Bengals got 4th year option on Higgins (actually 3d year too). So yeah, it is harder, but this is not Mooge's fault. Texans made the job harder by agreeing to waive 4th year option that probably could have been avoided. It will be incredibly hard now, but I hope Mooge is able to get it included. I do expect an extension though before next offseason.

Like you said unlike JD, Mooge extended Sherwood before he hit the market. I expect him to do the same thing with Sauce and GW, I do think it is coming this off-season. If not, it would really suck, but again, there is still time - he has not been late on anything just yet. Extended Sherwood, got Fields the very 1st day like I have been asking before others got their hand on him :). Let's see how it goes.

Can they put a speaker in his helmet and when it's time to turn his head, a coach pushes a button and an alarm goes off?

I understand your point but that's not a great example. the Browns had a well-rounded roster and a good team. Now they are devoid of talent beyond those 2 contracts. Their offensive line in particular used to be one of the best in football and now it might be the single worst unit in 2025.

so yeah you can hang onto 1 guy or 2 guys with big money but you obviously will take a hit elsewhere

It might make less financial sense to extend early as opposed to having someone play on an option year contract but there are plenty of positives to resigning elite homegrown talent before it becomes an issue. If Sauce and Garrett go this entire year, which I'm assuming is going to be abysmal, without an extension you can bet there's going to be a ton of noise this time next March.

What's better... having stars locked up for four years on a higher price tag with no drama or having to work out a deal with your disgruntled star to save some money?

That's exactly what the all 22 film that @legler82 provided showed. It also looks like he was a RB in College until 2019, and then spend two seasons as a CB before getting drafted. The stickiness skill is definitely there, which is half the battle right there, and I do think if anyone can teach him ball skills, it's AG. But it is not that easy to learn. Baltimore has great defensive coaches too, and he still hasn't learned in 4 years there. So, I am still skeptical, but good to know there is some possible upside, which AG thinks he can capitalize on.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I thought the extension kicks in AFTER the 5th year. So Stingley is locked up for 2025, 2026 (5th year option), then 2027-2029. Am I wrong on this? Or is it 2026-2028 that the 3 years kick in, meaning you forego 5th year option? I don't think that is the case, but if anyone can confirm it would be great.

The Texans never picked up his 5th year option so there's no 5th year of the original contract to honor. I also think how it affects this year's cap is up to the way the contract is structured. But either way, there was no 5th year on Stingley's deal before he signed this extension. Same would go for Sauce and GW, there's been no 5th year option picked up on them.

That 5th year is fully guaranteed and right now for Sauce it's projected to be $20 mil, fully guaranteed which means a $20 mil cap hit. It actually makes way more sense cap-wise to extend him... no doubt there'd be a lower guaranteed salary in 2026 and with the signing bonus spread out over the life of the deal you're probably just hitting $20 mil, maybe less.

Hmm, I found more info. Looks like my thinking was correct and above is wrong: they did pick up 5th year option and then extended: https://www.si.com/nfl/texans/news/...ve-back-to-record-extension-derek-stingley-jr

"Since Houston picked up Stingley's fifth-year option, the top corner will still be on his rookie deal in 2025 and 2026. The extension will kick in for the 2027 season and Stingley will be eligible to hit free agency at age 28 in the 2030 offseason." Over the CAP suggests the same, FA only in 2030: https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/player/_/id/76848/derek-stingley-jr

That makes more sense as otherwise it is a pretty terrible deal for Houston. They already fucked up by not getting a 4th year option. If I were Mooge though, I am pushing for the 4th year option. It would be JC Horn structure but at Stingley's salary. I do not think Houston did a good job there even though they were not completely retarded and picked up 5th year option. It is possible to do better I believe, but we will see.
