Still contemplating if I will even be aware of the outcome. I can’t emphasize enough how apathetic I’ve become.
Sounds a lot like the arguments people were making last year within the claims that we "needed' to go out and spend top dollar on a "name' like Mike Williams. While of course ignoring things like system fits or the fact it's was mostly based on cart before the horse type logic. If not upgrading from Corely or Lazard or a latter Tyler Boyd type signing as potential #2 type option ends up actually being a noteworthy problem this season it'll mean we've done something right for a change. I'll cross that concern bridge when we actually manage to get there.
Excellent post. Great players that don’t fit our system completely underachieved or don’t get used at all. Williams was the case in point. We adjusted nothing to help our receivers. I believe Corley also got a raw deal. Classic AR if you don’t run the perfect route you don’t get the ball. He made one bone head play on an otherwise perfect reverse dropping the ball before the end zone and he was toast. I have a feeling we will see a lot more of him under proper coaching.
Beware! What is "inarguably bad" is that on the Ides of March you believe that the NY Jets have apparently set their roster in stone "going into the season" that does not begin for another six months.
This isn’t as simple as “we need a number two receiver”. We have a lottery ticket quarterback that is due to have a $22 million cap hit next year. We are trying to see if we have something. I don’t think you are going to get much out of a quarterback who’s been mostly bad by surrounding him with all that one NFL level receiver. I specified at least once I know there was no splash move and I didn’t want one unless it’s something like Olave. My point is the entire room and how that affects what we’re trying to do. On that note we signed Tyler Johnson overnight who a lot of us wanted to draft a few years ago. That’s a lotto ticket signing I can get behind but not ideal when he’s the second best receiver in the room.
LOL. Yeah that guy will not outrun a turtle. But we are talking about minimum signings right right now. While speed is clearly #1 preference, as every other signing has been fast and every big investment, there is no rule without an exception. Let him battle for a roster spot, I don't see why not, he seemed to have been a good YAC guy for LA, bit target too, great College career. In general I think I see the strategy emerging here and I actually like it. In order to see one has to understand how CAP works. Basically every signing you make, not only impacts this year (even if it is a one year signing), but also can have future implications. The reason for that is that CAP can be carried over and also manipulated. Ultimately though every signing comes home to roost. Similarly every non signing of a stop gap player helps as well. For example say you sign some old guy to a 10-15 mil year deal, like what JD did before. What happens is in our case we lose 4th rounder comp pick for Reddick to start with. And also this is the CAP you spent that you otherwise would carry over into the future. All while the upside of an old guy is extremely limited. So, what AG and Mooge do now is do not spend any CAP/money on these guys. All big money went into someone who has an upside and if they are good, they will either keep them to win now and later or if they can't get a comp pick if they lose him. They are also signing bunch of young vets who have some potential for cheap because while all will not emerge, some will. And these are they guys they will invest in. Draft is also of course critical here, and from what I hear Mooge is specializing in this area. Another smart thing would be to extend GW and Sauce early. Philly does it all the time, because prices are going up rapidly. So, I can definitely see the strategy here to build a sustainable winner. Especially given the weak FA class, the worst thing you can do as far as building a sustainable winner is spend a lot of money on some washed up players who are not that good.
Is the season starting tomorrow? Obviously rhetorical. You really think we don't get another WR at some point in between today and the start of the season? Your entire freak out you've been doing lately screams that of someone with a "sky is falling" demeanor. It's not that serious broski.
He sounds like everything Malachi Corley was supposed to be, but at a very cheap price and without using any draft picks.
I think Nania overestimates him a bit, but this is a good signing. He will battle for a roster spot, which is just fine. Lack of speed and ability get separation greatly limits his ceiling. The guy IS dog slow even compared to some of the slower WRs in the League who are bigger than him. Corley is way faster and I think has more potential, but I do like the idea of getting these vets in and let them battle it out. Saleh and JD did something similar for UDFAs. But AG and Mooge are also investing a little bit in young veterans who showed something at some point. AND also I want to see UDFAs as well. I think doing both will give us a better probability of success.
Looks like we signed another scrub in his 20s - Nnadi from KC. It seems Mooge is going to use the draft to address DT plus competition between young cheap vets will hopefully result in better rotation there with Cowart and Leonard Taylor most promising rotational players and hopefully a starter in the draft.
The Jets have made some really nice moves in the last few days. Some cost effective young players with potential have shown how the new regime is going to operate. Also some veterans with something left to be backups. It's a long season and having some quality depth is important. Good stuff.
Im assuming we are not going to see another significant signing during FA. I suppose it depends on where Tyler Conklin ends up and what his contract looks like. They are certainly being strategic in their philosophy thus far. I like it personally.
There will be another waive, I believe after May 5th, but could be wrong., where signings don't count towards the comp formula. This will force a lot of activity, and some guys who have team options will get waived. We may be able to score there, who knows. But I do believe it is cheap camp battle signings between now and then.
