Sure. Having a competent coaching staff is also key to success. However, what I'm saying is that you can have Quinn (.500 coach with Matt Ryan) and Kingsbury (.430 coach in the NFL) and whoever else you want to insert into the equation. Without Daniels, they are not a playoff team. Probably not even .500. That's the reality.
I agree with you. But Daniels was the reason they succeeded. Dan Quinn? He was a .500 coach in ATL with a HOF QB. Kingsbury? Great offensive mind. Sure. With a .430 winning percentage as a HC. So let's be real when we talk about why WAS made it to the NFC championship.
Yah…the NFL is all about the QB If you have a good one, you can challenge for the playoffs consistently, as he is THE most critical piece. But yeah you still need players around him, notably a good OL, you need good coaching, etc. Look at Burrow..clearly a top QB with a top WR in Chase and yet they missed the playoffs this year…so the QB drives the bus, but you need more than just the QB. But yes, I attribute Washington’s success mostly to the fact that Daniels was great this year…like Stroud was his rookie year (both #2 overall picks by the way…unlike our #2 pick Zach who sucked) But still…Daniels and Stroud both had good coaches who put them in a position to succeed.
Reddick was about 3 times worse. Dont forget the context of what happened leading up to it, it wasnt just a 3rd round pick lost. 1. Douglas spends a 1st round pick on ER Will McDonald when he already has Bryce Huff, Jermaine Johnson, John Franklin Myers on the roster. This was a 1st round asset that could have been used to secure many of the other holes on the roster at the time (namely offensive line, which got their QB killed and ruined the season). This lead me to believe they were not planning on re-signing Huff after the year, for whatever reason. I didnt agree with this, as Huff was homegrown and pass rushers are hard to find. 2. Rodgers goes down 5 plays in, the season is now over, and we are at the trade deadline. Assuming that the jets arent going to resign Huff at the close of the year (because that is the only logical explanation as to why they would waste a 1st round pick on another edge if they were planning on keeping Huff) it was the perfect time to trade Huff and get something back, as opposed to losing him for nothing after the year. Aaron going down and the season being lost made this potential move possible, because had Aaron stayed healthy, the jets would not be in "sell" mode to begin with and they would have had to keep Huff for the stretch run and then lose him for nothing when the year was over. However, since the season was lost anyway, this was the perfect opportunity to get an asset for Huff. 3. The deadline comes and goes and the jets did nothing with Huff. He's still on the roster. This lead me to question everything... I guess they are planning on keeping him and re-signing him after the year? That wouldnt make much sense though after using a 1st on McDonald, but it also wouldnt make sense to keep him, not get anything for him, and lose him for nothing... so what are the jets thinking here? Guess we'll have to wait and see. 4. The jets dont re-sign Huff. They lose him for nothing, which is really stupid because they surely could have gotten something for him at the deadline. Anyway, now using a 1st round pick on another ER in McDonald is now making sense. Guess they are expecting him to take over. 5. Bam... the jets trade a 3rd round pick for Reddick. This made no sense to me at the time, because I thought the plan was to utilize McDonald since they spent a 1st round pick on him and let Huff walk. If they weren't planning on using McDonald, then why didnt they just re-sign Huff and not lose a 3rd round pick. And why would they waste a 1st round pick on McDonald then? None of this made any sense. Huff was way younger than Reddick, why would they not be willing to give Huff the money yet they are willing to extend Reddick who will be 30 soon? 6. Oh wait, the jets aren't even able to extend him. They traded another asset for a disgruntled player that they didnt need because they already had McDonald. He holds out, makes a mockery of the jets, they get nothing out of him... we know the whole story. The asset management here of this position is unbelievably horrible. Not to mention they traded JFM away. They had a valuable asset in Huff that they not only lost for nothing, but they THEN spent more assets to replace him which they didnt need to do if they just resigned him or allowed McDonald to play. I made this analogy at the time on this board: imagine owning a rental house. Its an asset and its making you money. Let's say it costs $300k. Instead of paying the mortgage, you dont, it gets foreclosed on and you lose it for nothing. Then you spend an additional $300k to acquire a new rental property. You didnt lose $300k, you lost $600k. The jets had an asset in Huff that they not only didnt keep, but they had to use more assets to replace him and then the player they acquired didnt get resigned and didnt contribute. Its like they got the 2nd rental property and then just burned it to the ground. McDonald became the player they hoped, which proved how stupid they were because he was there the whole time and they didnt even need Reddick. What an unreal debacle. This is GM malpractice.
Yeah…that whole situation was pretty bad as you laid out Compounding that fiasco was the amount of draft picks and free agent dollars spent on OL, and we STILL had a terrible OL for most of JD’s tenure. And then the icing on the cake…missing HUGELY on Zach I wanted to like JD because I thought he had the right strategy and vision…spent premium assets on premium positions (QB, LT, DE, WR, CB) and build the lines on both sides of the ball. He learned that I’m guessing from his time at both Philly and Baltimore. What he apparently didn’t learn, though, was the actual execution of that strategy. The tactics needed in order to make that vision come through. Way too many busted picks in the 2nd and 3rd rounds, and the inability to field a decent OL despite using plenty of draft picks and free agent signings Ah well…he almost made it through his 6 year deal, and there are very valid arguments to say he should’ve been fired earlier than he was
I really like this review of total ineptitude by the Jets! Maybe make it into a children's book with pictures. Call it "Being a Jets Fan Sucks!"
Woody Johnson sucks worse. He fired the previous GM in May to hire Douglas. He fired the head coach after five games this past season. The GM a few weeks later. Those decisions could be considered sabotage(?) to me seems like it. Unfortunately he's still here and no sign of him going anywhere. It is what it is.
You will NEVER go wrong in trying to overstate Woody’s complete and total stupidity and ineptitude when it comes to leadership and football Never As bad as we may think he is, and as completely useless and idiotic as he’s been…he keeps on proving over and over and over and over that it CAN and it WILL get worse.
