Good list, though I would argue Kwesi's role with 49ers was executive in nature and he was close to the operations his entire career. Still, point well taken, even though this is a small % of overall GMs, most did take more time. I just think the probability of success increases if you had more than 4 years experience with operations before becoming a GM, but as you pointed out there are some notable exceptions, and JD could have been one of them, but wasn't.
I think JD was the first guy really since Parcells where he had the resume to be considered a legit GM candidate. We can split hairs on stuff like specific titles, or years in the role, whatever. He had a valid resume. Personnel side. Came from two very well run organizations in Baltimore and Philly. Had football experience. He had the resume. If you look at everyone after Parcells, Tanny was Parcells’ money guy so Parcells vouched for him but if not for that, he was a cap guy. Idzik had no business being in the conversation…he was a contracts guy only. Mac had the scouting background but he wasn’t part of any great team building…he got hired because Casserly pushed him. But not a single one of those guys would have gotten GM interviews or attention by any other team. Not one was a “hot name” or was pursued by other teams. They were all “We hired WHO???” type guys. JD was actually the first guy who when his name came up most people didn’t say that about him. In the end, he failed, but he did have the right strategy … he just blew too many picks. But he had some great picks, and some great trades, and some great fee agents too in guys like Reed. Just too many blown picks/free agents and they seemed to concentrate heavily on the OL group. And that along with the Zach pick just nailed him. 6 years is enough time to turn a program around if you know what you’re doing. He couldn’t do it.
I don’t really care and I’m not going to keep arguing since it’s irrelevant but you’re changing your criteria lol. A manager of football research is not senior level management dude.
It doesn't take a lot of skill to draft the obviously awesome player that fell to you. Joe Douglas did it a whole bunch in 2022.
Tom Telesco actually had a decent drafting record with the Chargers. Up and down like all of them. He sealed his fate when he got antsy and handed out all those big ass contracts to Bosa, Mack, that shitty New England corner I can’t think of. Not advocating for him but I don’t really get hiring him and firing him with one year of work in Vegas.
I am not sure how Alec stands out with a veteran coach if Woody hires Rex or Vrabel or Rivera. Jmgot to be a good combination. If Alec wants one way and Rex wants a defense, it’s not going to work. Just my two cents.
Well, according to some folks' logic, he should get zero merit, means nothing, it just fell on his lap, no brainer. Just like JDs good picks, they all fell on his lap. LOL. Time to pick a new GM.
I wish to God that Tannenbaum handed a card of recommendation with his name as GM and Rex as coach with a note that says “run it back, bitch!!” And it’s all on Hard Knocks.
The active QB with the second-most rings in the NFL is Garoppolo. Douglas's resume was worth about as much as Garoppolo's rings.
The reality if you pick a former GM, retread, while it might work, there is usually a good reason why they were fired. It is also a position where rarely you get a second chance and where it is easy to burn out, even more so than HC. So I am looking at 1st time GM as a preference. That means I want someone who either made some key decisions with a successful franchise or worked very closely with a GM that did for a decent period of time, where there is a high probability they picked up what that GM mentored and replicate that. When looking around the League, I think Roseman is probably the best GM in football. Philly roster is always stacked and even coaches he picks seem to be very good. Even when he fired Pederson, that was a questionable decision at the time, but Pederson got another chance and failed, while Philly made another SB with another coach, and should have probably won it if not for the refs favoring KC. Now it so happens that Roseman actually has assistant GM, Halaby, who he came up the ranks working for Howie for a dozen years directly. That guy is no dummy either, Harvard grad, analytics background. I just don't see a better choice, at least on paper.
Gotta say I’m happier with this GM list than I am with the HC list Hopefully we get one of these guys in and then he can take over the HC interview process…I’m hoping the HC interviews are happening now before the GM for maybe two reasons…first, gotta talk to these guys before they all get hired away, and second, maybe it’s a baseline to present to the new GM so he can hit the ground running with some pre work already done on that front. Hmmm…I doubt Woody is that thoughtful and knowledgeable though…
JD had a propensity for absolutely back breaking and easily avoidable mistakes where frankly everyone else can see he fucked up except him. Here is an example. JFM actually commented that the Jets haven't offered him ANYWHERE NEAR 2 year 15 mil total deal, 7.5 mil per year. That means if JD actually offered somewhere close to this, JFM could have stayed we wouldn't even have to trade him. We could have probably had him for 5-6 mil a year. That's near 7.5 and we didn't have to allow him to negotiate with Denver. But even if it is 7, this is chump change for a guy who is a proven good starter in the League. Instead he wanted to play Clemons who was awful the year before. And literally everyone on this board thought the trade was utterly moronic. Things like that is why JD cannot be a GM in NFL. You can get 5 things right, but when you make an obvious back breaking mistake it does not matter. Which is why it's good to have him as an assistant but you cannot have him be the final decision maker. Having JD as a GM is like going bear back with a $5 whore. Sooner or later you get fucked. So yeah there are some good moves, but every year he fucked something big up, which would not allow us to get over the hump.
I keep getting alerts about all these interviews being completed. The Jets are speed dating at this point. How will this end up being successful??
I believe the idea is that it's the first round, so they keep it relatively wide. There will be a second round after that, a much smaller list I assume. Thinking maybe 2-3 people, one of whom will be the guy. I think next week we will have the GM identified. The HC list I still think will grow after the new GM is hired and interviews the HC finalists from earlier in the second round plus a few others.
