None of us here are close enough to determine who is simply touted by the wags as highly regarded and in high demand and who actually is highly regarded and in high demand. I guess that's why 33rd Team is in the picture. We will get to analyze their value in the future but much of that will be done prematurely; it's how things are done here.

There is but we are talking about the guy being cheap. A cheap guy would be on the bottom for players too - that's where the most money goes. He is not and often top 10, even top 5 last year. Also, gave JD a 6 year deal (GM contracts typically 2-5 years), and 5 year deal for Saleh (typical 4-5 years). I just don't think Woody is cheap. Dumb - yes, Cheap - no. If he stumbles into a good GM with Spielman's and Tanny's help, this team can win again.

Back to my point, we hired 2 guys that failed at their jobs to consult us on the qualities needed to be successful at the job. Nice, smart. Real fuckin smart,

meh everybody gets fired eventually. They weren’t failures

I think they are mostly just the face of the firm anyway. Consultants will consult

Has it dawned on you yet that regardless of their individual success they may very well have a much better knowledge of those who should be candidates than the owner of the team?

Johnson has gone with a head hunting firm and a pair of NFL relics in the past because he doesn't know who the candidates should be. He is now getting much closer to people who have insight into what is going on in the league today and those making it happen. Why would you have a problem with that? What exactly is your point?

You wouldn't recognize logic if it bit you on the butt. What's your plan?

Hire someone who’s actually won something. There’s 2 of them available.

Belichick is not coming to help the Jets. Carroll is employed by Seattle. What's your plan?

Money talks, period. When it comes to hiring the right guys in leadership you open the checkbook and pry away a winner. It’s not like it counts against the cap. Stop being cheap hiring losers to find more losers.

Who says money is in the way? I don't know where you come from that you believe money is the answer to everything and that everyone's desire for more money, even when they have plenty, will make them do things they have no desire to do.

More important, have you ever heard the expression "Past performance is no guarantee of future results"?

money has always gotten in the way though. woody has never had a top 5 paid coach or GM

as for the disclaimer about past performance? It would be nice to at least test that sometime!!

Chargers paid a lot for Harbaugh. No guarantees but it looks like a good move for them

The problem is not the money. As I already mentioned before, Woody gave JD longer contract that usual GM, longer contract for Saleh, and they were considered a good hires at the time, not cheap ones. The highest paid coaches and GMs are the ones who get second/3d contract. Unless you get Harbaugh or Sean Payton, who were not aligned with our cycles. Unfortunately we did not have a lot of success. But people bring money as the problem with Woody, and the facts are not aligned with that. Stupidity is the biggest problem.

Yes, hence why we keep hiring losers at everything.

Yes, like the stupidity of hiring people who failed miserably at their jobs to hire people to do the job they were miserable at. Stupidity at its finest.

First of all, I already proved they are not losers based on record, but I doubt we will get on the same page there. A couple of points.

Belichick will never work for Woody, money is not a problem. He hates the Jets, he shits on the Jets and Woody all the time. Money doesn't talk here - this will NEVER happen. But besides that, Belichick is also grossly overrated. There is a significant record Belichick has without Brady with both Cleveland and NE. We also have a record of old and diminished Brady with another coach who has not won anything prior.

Belichick had 5 seasons with Cleveland. 1 play-off appearance, 1 play-off W. He had 6 seasons with NE where Brady did not play. 1 play-off appearance. Also, under .500 for both teams. Total 11 seasons, 2 play-off appearances, 1 total W, under .500 for both teams with a very large sample size of 11 season, which does not include the greatest player of all time, which he lucked out into 6th round. It's not like he thought Brady was this amazing talent. In the 6th round to get a GOAT, you just thank heavens for dumb luck. As far as ability though, I see nothing more than a solid/good coach.

Brady, on the other hand, while already greatly diminished at 40+, went to a loser organization and made play-offs 3 of 3 years, won in play-offs two of years, got SB. Did Arians all of the sudden also become a SB caliber coach? Hello no. He was a good coach, who only won 1 play-off game in his life, and all of the sudden he got Brady and wins 5 games in two years including SB. Just like Belichick did, he lucked into Brady.

So, to conclude, Bill has not shown to be great at all unless he had Brady, who made another coach who only won 1 play-off game previously, look just as good. He is just solid. Plus he is old now. He is not going to the Jets nor should the Jets want him. As far as Carroll, I do like him, but more of a HC consultant, not GM, since Carroll was really a coach. He is employed by another NFL franchise and I have no idea if he even wants to work with the Jets in the role to search for a coach. Putting all eggs in that basket to me is not a solid plan.

They had a better record than Belichick during the seasons when he didn't have Brady. Now, trying to hire Belichick to help find a GM for the Jets, that would have been epically stupid. The way I see it, Woody accepted to some extent that he is not that bright when comes to football, and actually hired successful former GMs (who just helped turn Washington around) to help him instead of fucking up himself again. This is a good step forward.

Although neither Spielman or Tanny have won a Super Bowl, I wouldn’t go so far as to call them failures. No, they didn’t achieve the ultimate goal…but if that’s the bar to determine success or failure then most of the GMs in the league are failures.

Yes, they got fired, but in this business, almost all of the GMs and HCs get fired. Some get to retire on their own terms, like Cowher or Shula, but most of them get fired. Shit, even Belichick was nudged out the door…he didn’t get fired technically, but he kinda did…Kraft just showed him some courtesy by not actually firing him. Tony Dungy was fired by the Bucs and then went on and did well…he wasn’t a failure. I think one of the best GMs to ever do it (because he did it three fucking times with the Panthers, Bills, and Colts) was Bill Polian, and he got fired as well. He wasn’t a failure.

    So it happens.

I don’t think Tanny or Spielman are among the best ever GMs by a long shot, but they both had some success and had some pretty good drafts. So not the best but not the worst.

Also, how well they did is not really so relevant to what they are being hired to do now. They were hired as consultants to identify and vet good candidates. I think the key part of that is that they were actually in the seat for a while, Tanny even did that here so he has inside knowledge of how this team and this owner works. That’s a plus. Last time we hired consultants it was fucking Casserly who was so fucking old and out of touch, and Wolf who was also old. This time these guys are bit more recent.

    We’ll see.

Doesn’t mean they will do any better but I don’t think it’s a terrible choice to have these two former GMs do this work…

Do you even understand the disclaimer?

Who do you want for GM, and why? Who do you want for HC, and why?
