Since there is a good chance, we will have a new GM/HC it is impossible to even guess what the Jets will do this coming offseason to get ready for 2025.
I thought bringing Rodgers here would create another media circus as when Favre was here (it has) but I also thought having a guy like Rodgers would teach the Jets how to be a winning team (it hasn't). Last year when everyone was talking Super Bowl, I knew the Jets couldn't win a SB in year 1 of AR because it takes time for everyone to play on the same level, then maybe the next year the Jets might contend. So this is year 1, but I never dreamed it would be this bad given the talent assembled for him. I wouldn't mind a bit if they scuttled this Rodgers experiment. Get rid of all the older players and go with youth.
Probably not, but who else are they going to get? Hopefully they'll be in position to draft a QB high. If so, do you go with Tyrod Taylor as QB1 and bridge or will there be a better option?
I'd keep an eye out for Matthew Stafford. The Rams will save a ridiculous amount of money if he's cut after June 1st. It seems like a no brainer for them to do that. hot coaching candidate Kliff Kingsbury has raved about Stafford in the past. -- Hire Kingsbury, pray that Rodgers retires, sign post-June 1st cut Matthew Stafford, there could be brighter days ahead! Even brighter if we tank the right way this season and land WR/CB Travis Hunter in the draft
Long term no, its still a stop gap sure. But Stafford is better than Rodgers is at this point and less of a pain in the ass
Would be thrilled with Stafford and interested in Kingsbury. But who plays QB for the Rans if he gets cut? He's in a great situation with McVay. A lot can happen between now and the offseason but Staffoed as a cut candidate last kffsesson too and didn't happen
I would love to dump Rodgers, but I doubt that the Jests would take that cap hit. Actually, there would be no point to dump Aaron and then bring in any sort of an accomplished veteran, the finances would preclude that. May as well ride to the sunset with Rodgers for one more season as long as we can definitely be rid of him after that, but let's try to draft his successor. Does anybody have any Jordan Travis updates. He was very good in college, maybe he could be the guy if he is 100% recovered. Still it would be nice to draft another and let a couple of young guns compete.
So I will preface this by saying I was all for bringing Rodgers, and even still I’m happy we did. The alternative was sticking with Zach or signing Carr. Zach sucks, and frankly Carr would be locked in here for another 2 years past this regime’s tenure, meaning the next coach/Gm would be stuck with him. Rodgers was a way for a bad coaching staff and GM to take a last second hail mary to win and keep their jobs. It failed. Period. Saleh is gone and JD’s contract ends this year. We are going to be replacing our entire coaching staff. Adams contract has an easy out at the end of this year, that was deliberate. Hassan Reddick was not given a long term contract. That was deliberate. Rodgers is not coming back, look at him. He’s old, he’s scared as fuck to be hurt again, and he’s not that good. His only option to stay would be to learn a new offense based on the coach we hire. Dude was in Egypt during mandatory camp, you think he’s putting in the time to learn a new offense and terminology? Hell no. This team will look so different next year that we’re hardly going to recognize it. Jordan Travis is going to be treated like the red headed stepchild of the new regime. It’s just the way it goes, no regime is gonna put their eggs into an injured late round draft pick. Considering how bad we are, I do think we’re going to have a high draft pick and will likely be taking a QB again.
Do what you can to get him to retire: bench him, fire Hackett, make it clear you’re drafting his replacement in R1/2, no more acquiring his buddies, etc
$23m cap hit and $49m in dead cap which can be spread over 2 years - we get hit with the dead cap even if he retires.
I don't think he was afraid to get hurt, I think he is hurt..... Look how he was moving in the first NE game,. Then he took a beating in the Denver and Vikings game (especially the later. Came back in after being bent like a pretzel) but has unfortunately looked like shit since...
The Jets don't need to mend any wounds. They need to drop a nuke on the current franchise and start completely new. New GM, HC, scouts, administrative people. accountants, telemarketers, QB, the entire franchise minus Woody. You can't blend remnants of an old losing culture with a brand new regime. It never works. That's a recipe for disaster. New groceries, new recipes, brand new team next year.
That’s what I’m saying, sorry I wasn’t clearer. Yes, he’s definitely hurting. Enough so that I think the moment we’re officially eliminated from the playoffs (probably after we lest the next 2 games vs HOU and AZ) he’s going on IR. He was retiring 2 years ago then changed his mind. Since then he’s ruptured his achilles, hurt his other knee, ankle, and hamstring. He’s playing like he doesn’t want to get hurt. He has one of the shortest YPC’s in the league and he’s getting the ball out as quick as any QB in the league because he’s avoiding getting hit. Now he’s feeling the real pains of being over 40 in a young man’s game. Add to that the fact he’ll have a new coaching regime and would have to learn a new offense…. Yeah there’s no chance he’s not retiring.
I never wanted them to bring in Rodgers - I wanted them to focus on a young signal caller to build around even though they always get it wrong - I will be very glad when he has gone, but it is hard to see how they avoid it for next year unless they just totally write off 2025 and try to absorb all the cap hits as quickly as they can. Also need to get rid of all the WRs they've brought in: - Lazard - have an out after this year with $6m dead cap - Adams - have got to let him go after this year - $8m dead cap - only way he stays is with a contract renegotiation but can't see him wanting to stick around - Williams - gone after this year (UFA) if not before
I don’t think he cares about the $30m. Again, he had all those millions of reasons to not retire 2 years ago and he all but did.
Rodgers didn't retire 2 years ago though. The retirement talk was just that, talk, and star players at the end of their career often use threat of retirement to get something they want. Like say, a trade to another team who gives him every player and every coach he wants... (it worked brilliantly!) Its going to be ugly trying to get him to retire and I don't think he will walk away from all that money
Trade for Bryce Young and continue to build that OL....thinking a Sam Darnold vikings type situation here.
