I'll answer this from the opposite angle: Why I still AM a Jets fan despite nearly a decade and a half of futility. Despite the Jet fanbase assertion that we are the ONLY dysfunctional team in the entire league. Has anyone paid attention to the Giants, Panthers, Jaguars, or Browns? All are struggling with bad ownership and a revolving door of coaches and QBs over the past decade or more. Also, we're not the ONLY team to have had a playoff drought or periods of futility. The Bills didn't make the playoffs between 2000 and 2016. The Patriots were almost irrelevant until Parcells came along, and weren't a dynasty until Brady, and almost left for St. Louis in the early 1990s. The Browns had almost 20 years of irrelevance until a couple years ago, and they've slipped back into dysfunction. The Chiefs only made the playoffs once between 1971 and 1989 and didn't win a single playoff game between 1994 and 2017. The Packers only made the playoffs twice between 1969 and 1992. The Buccaneers were nicknamed the "Team that Invented Losing" until Tony Dungy and then Jon Gruden turned them around 20+ years after they were founded. They also went through a 10+ year drought until Tom Brady joined. The Cardinals have only made the playoffs 11 times in 78 years and have had multiple 10+ year playoff droughts. The Saints didn't make the playoffs for the first 20 years of their existence, didn't win a playoff game until their 33rd year, and didn't become a yearly contender until Drew Brees and Sean Payton came along in their 39th year! The Lions have been largely irrelevant until...last year. My point is, I'm sticking it out to see when our day will come. We're not on the only fan base who has declared our team cursed, or declared that we would never win with the current ownership, or has spent long spans of years of futility. Yes, it's frustrating right now, but I'm not going to walk away from the team and then someday walk back when they're good and say "I've ALWAYS stuck by my Jets!"
Living in New Jersey and not being able to watch teams from New Jersey play every week had me ready to quit on the NFL. Sent from my SM-S906U using Tapatalk
I feel your pain brother! It would take a lot to jump off the ship after being a fan for 27+ years with little good sprinkled in that time. But I guess if I found out that everyone in the organization was tied to Diddy's and Harvey Weinstein's actions AND the Jets secretly funded Vick's dog fighting rings back in the day, then I'd have a enough reason to jump LOL. Hey remember our Yanks were down 0-2 to the Braves in the WS and we came back to win it. So with the yanks I have reason to believe!
Thanks bro, im just a natural pessimist and all this Jets crap lately has it multiplied. Im still watching and rooting for our Yanks. That game 1 loss put me in a depression like ive never seen. I went to bed at 10pm on a Fri night because I couldnt handle it. So i need to hope for major illegal activity so I can finally drop the Jets? lol
REALLY? You know how many Yankee fans live in Connecticut? You think they are ready to quit mlb because there are no teams there? lol So you were ready to quit the NFL and then got saved when the Jets moved to NJ? Looking back if I were you I would wish they never moved.
Its not just right NOW, its decades and its not just the playoff drought. Its the way that we lose and that we seem to do everything wrong. When they were briefly good under Rex Ryan I didnt go around boasting how I always stuck by my Jets and if I did who the fuck would care? If we win 10 years from now it will never equal all the Sundays of embarrassing, heartbreaking losses. I would leave it all behind if i could, but i just cant do it for some reason.
Overall, I try to find the positives but man... these past few years with the Jets are making me more cynical. I left jersey and have been down in south florida for 8 years and with a large majority of dolphins fans, I like showing off my Jets fandom. So that too would make it tough to jump ship, unless there is a wide range of Jets affiliated crime LOL. I feel you too after the yanks blew game 1. I was watching mid-workout in the gym, and as soon as Nestor gave us that GS I literally said "f*ck this" outloud, got up off my bench and left LOL
Well said... I can absolutely appreciate what you said here. Let's face it, no one and I mean NO ONE will ever be able to say they had it bad as the Lions did. Sometimes I forget that, outside these last couple years, they've basically stunk since their inception. Here's my problem, and it's a big problem. These people get paid millions of dollars because they are supposed to be the "experts." I will not speak for other teams but I feel that there are no less than 2 or 3 people, that post on this board, that are head and shoulders above what I'm seeing these supposed bullshit millionaires are doing with this organization. Look, I can take injuries, I can take teams with more talent but what I can't take is a team that is literally coached by people who, I feel, shouldn't be coaching in High School let alone professional football. The lack of preparedness, lack of heart, lack of energy...the lack of fundamentals!!! Can someone tell me, with a HoF QB running the show, how this team blows through 3 time outs and incurs multiple procedural penalties, including a delay of game, in the 1st damn quarter!!!!! Hell, Rodgers should just ignore the assholes on the sideline and call his own game! It's what I EXPECTED of him! Not only does he not do that but see my comments about lack of heart. After all that ranting, to me, it's the lack of heart that bothers me the most. These MEN are getting paid millions of dollars to play a freakin' CHILD's game. Heart should NEVER even be a question! No heart, no energy...I've been watching the NY Jets for multiple decades and I've NEVER seen one of "our" teams lay down like this. Bill Parcels would have fucking fired HALF this team with a performance like that. Unreal. I don't know if my fandom is in question or if I'm just too disgusted to make a decision right now. At this point, I'm just fucking rambling.
Hopefully Steve Cohen will buy the team and move to it a new stadium he builds at Willets Point after they fuck him out of the casino deal.
I live in Australia and today's game started 4am Monday morning local time. So I woke up early before work to watch the game, great start to the week. I don't know why I feel so attached, I've never been to the US let alone NY but fell in love with the NFL and the Jets during their last playoffs run. I hate the Pats so seemed like a natural to follow the Jets especially after we went into Foxboro and kicked their butts during the playoffs. Been all downhill since but I'm rusted on now. My other football team is the Melbourne Football Club in the Australian Football League. We won our penultimate premiership in 1964 and broke the drought in 2021 - while everyone in Melbourne was in covid lockdown so couldn't attend the game or celebrate properly. I also support the Spurs in EPL but only for the last few seasons and nowhere near as fanatically as Melbourne or the Jets. So I can empathise with the whole feeling jinxed thing.
I hate to say it, but I was hoping when rumors were flying that the NFL was planning on putting teams In London, Mexico, etc. that Woody would move the Jets there, being a Trump rep. in the UK and all. That would have been my out, for sure. But, alas, here we are, and the Jets continue to ruin our Sundays.
Do people feel any kind of obligation to the team/organisation to turn up to games? We don't have private ownership of football teams in Australia, we are member based football clubs with members being basically season ticket holders but also having voting rights for board elections. Economy of scale also means we don't have the money of the American/European leagues being a country of only ~30m people so our highest paid players earn around $1.2-1.5m per year. I'm painting this picture because my club is heavily reliant on people not only buying memberships/season tickets but also turning up to games to actually make sure they are economically viable but in the US, with private ownership, surely that is not a factor. Why then do people continue turning up every week to watch an embarrassment of a team? Why waste your weekend when you can watch on tv if you really want to indulge in the agony? Is it because the game is blacked out on local tv? Scarcity of tickets (when there are only 8 home games a year)? Or is it because you've already forked out for the season tickets so want to get your money's worth? Or some other reason (going with friends, family, just a diehard fan etc)?
I have seen the Jets in person 3 times now - twice in London and once at Met Life - they lost every one of those games
I have been a fan so fricking long and me and the Jets, "we been through some shit"! Despite that, I don't think I have ever been so down on this team in almost 50 years! I have seen worse single year runs but I have never seen such a long stretch of complete ineptitude. Since the back to back AFCCG's we have now seen what I consider 3 MAJOR "blow it all up and rebuild" attempts with no success at all. Rebuild #1 The Idzik years with Geno Rebuild #2 MacCagnan and Bowles. One winning season and 'should-have-been' playoff team. Could have been capable of a deep playoff run if they hadn't choked against Rex's Bills. Followed up with the Darnold era rebuild which was de-railed from the absolutely mind-numbing decision to hire Adam Gase. Rebuild #3 - The current regime which began with the unfortunate decision to draft Zach Wilson. In hindsight, just a terrible decision to burn a #2 pick on a QB in a very bad draft for QB's. Could have drafted several game-changing players at other positions. We thought we could "fix" the ZW diaster with Aaron Rodgers and that was another huge miscalculation. Now our core talent is approaching the end of their rookie contracts and the window is damn near shut. All this is to say, I have zero confidence that the next rebuild will produce different results. Why? Because, the NYJ are not an organization that attracts winners. What high caliber coach or GM would want to come here? This organization is the place where careers go to die.
very true - as I said in another thread if the Jets were a person they would be a Rodney Dangerfield character "if it weren't for bad luck I wouldn't have any luck at all" - this mantra just seems to sum up this team - nothing ever seems to go right for it (I know to a degree you make your own luck but the Jets just seem to get it wrong every time - always draft the wrong QB, never bad enough when they need to be or if there are it is in a draft with no good QBs etc).
Well that's just the thing, at some point to concept of luck goes out the window and it's just the expected result, no probability required.
The Rodgers decision seems to have Woody's hands all over it. It's a move that reeks of desperation. It's also a move that probably came from the belief that we could replicate the success that Tampa had with Brady. It's like we learned no lessons at all from the Brett Favre debacle.
