I hear you--he actually stands out to me as a negative with the terrible penalties--He's a big dead money hit tho with a release prior to June 1--after June 1 it looks like he's just a 3mm dead money with a 13mm cap savings.

This seems quite good. You weren't going to cut him. He had a contract paying 17. None was guaranteed though. He now gets 13.25 guaranteed but over two years in which his total pay is 17. Appears he takes a 50% cut this year to get about half of the remainder guaranteed next year.

The reduced salary for CJ Mosley makes sense, he visibly lost a step in 2023. He's still better at calling the pre-snap defense than most ILBs we have ever had and I think he probably covers up some dumbfuck decisions by Ulbrich the way they are hoping Rodgers will with Hackett. And he still hits hard even since he lost the weight. Getting slow though.

His contract as posted shows Mosley will make 7.2 million this season with 16.4 million guaranteed next year. So he basically gained 3 million to restructure, and increased his guarantee quite a bit.

This frees up 13 million this season.

Not exactly. Originally he was scheduled to make 17 mil this year, but it was not guaranteed. He changed that to 2 year contract worth 9 mil this year, and 8.5 in 2025 (total 17.5): https://sports.yahoo.com/jets-restructure-c-j-mosleys-132011302.html

This year (9 mil) is fully guaranteed.
2025 only half (4.25) is fully guaranteed.

Meaning if he completely drops off the cliff this year we can pay him 4.25 mil in 2025 not to play. What you are probably looking at are CAP #s. That is a little different than actual salary due to various manipulations.

I don't think the Yahoo article is accurate because they are neglecting all of his bonuses. Originally he was scheduled to make 21 million total this season, 17 in salary and 4 in bonuses, with 10 million guaranteed. Old contract:
    https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/new-york-jets/c.j.-mosley-14426/

The restructure decreased his base salary but greatly increased his guaranteed money to 23.6 million, guaranteeing 5.4 million in salary and 18 million in prorated signing bonuses. His salary this year is 1.2 million with an added 6 million bonus money, totaling 7.2 million. Thus he only costs 7.2 million this season (huge savings). But we pay on the back end. Its a sizable money push into the future.

After this season we will still owe him 16.4 million guaranteed - 4 in salary and 12 in restructure bonuses. If we release him next year we incur a 16.4 million dead cap, or after June 1st we will only owe him 12.5 million, with 3.6 million pushing into 2026.

    New contract:

No, @ouchy, these restructured #s is not real money left to be paid, it's for CAP purposes and includes what was already paid. Even in your own link, check on the bottom, it matches yahoo exactly: "The Jets and Mosely reworked the contract in 2024, signing a new two year, $17.25 million contract of which $13.25 million is fully guaranteed. The move reduced Mosley's 2024 cap charge by $14.2 million. The final three years are void years for cap purposes."

Even your own link says 13.25 guaranteed. Not 23.6. You are mixing up prorated bonus over two contracts (original also had void years after first restructure) with actual guaranteed money left to be paid. Some of this prorated bonus was already paid. That's why it is called prorated, it's for CAP purposes. CAP numbers are correct, the confusion is mixing last contract with void years that had prorated with new one, which gets more void years added. Again, this is all CAP manipulations. The real new contract is this:

2024 (9 mil) is fully guaranteed.
2025 (8.5 mil), only half (4.25) is fully guaranteed.

LOL. Happy to be wrong on that one! That's why I said in the other thread JD is back! Though I did nail the 6 mil part - at least as far as Smith guarantee is concerned. :)

@Borat, it doesn't matter if we've already paid him if the cap number is pushed forward. His charge to the cap is what we're discussing.

His last contract was for 21 million with 10 million guaranteed, all due this year. We gave him an extra 2 million to spread that money out and guaranteed it. The 13 million guarantee is added to the 10 million from his last deal. So where as 10 million was guaranteed going into this season, 23 million is now guaranteed, because we pushed it forward. Yes, most of it is in prorated bonuses, but it still counts against the year it is assigned. If we release Mosley after this season we will incur a 16.4 million dead cap, not a 4.2 million. The contract as posted clearly reflects this. The cap money we saved this season was pushed into the future.

On CAP we are in agreement, there is carryover, but Mosely is not getting paid 10 mil + 13.25 guaranteed over the next two years. These 10 mil carryover it's all for CAP, not actual financials. Anyway, I was looking for sportrac to show this to you as it has actual numbers from NFLPA and is as official as it can get, but it was not available, until now.

    https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/new-york-jets/cj-mosley-14426/

Look at the Cash values: 9 mil this year, 8.25 next year (I thought it was 8.5, but not far off). That's what's left of payments. And 8.25 is not fully guaranteed, only 4 of it is. Anyway, looking at sportrac we can both see the full picture we are at.
