in about 20 years from now when the NFL becomes a more defensive league. The Jets will focus on offense. don't you worry.
Yeah…I don’t think JD has ignored offense, especially in the draft…he’s drafted OL and WR high. Even more striking compared to his predecessors like Mac who NEVER drafted OL high and rarely at all, and even came out and said he didn’t value it high. JD had a lot to fix coming into the job. That being said, JD has utterly failed the OL … not because he’s ignored it, but because his decisions for the most part haven’t panned out. His first year or two he signed bargain basement tier 2/3 type guys like the Khalil retired center who couldn’t fucking snap the ball, or some of the other scrubs like Alex Lewis or GVR. Then when he did well with Fant and Moses, he let them walk when he should have kept them. In the draft, taking Becton over Wirfs is bad in hindsight…I know many at the time thought it was bad then…and I would’ve gone with the Iowa guy myself, but I understood the thinking in taking a guy with freakish upside who played LT and didn’t have an injury history. Still, it didn’t work. AVT was a great OG, but trading up for a guard is dubious at best, and then because of all the other woes on the OL we had to move him out of his natural position and he got hurt two years in a row. It is what it is…JD has NOT done even a remotely good job on the OL…and 5 years in, it’s pretty inexcusable…but his failure here hasn’t been due to a lack of trying or to ignoring OL… At WR, he scored huge on GW but also failed miserably with his 2nd round WRs in Mims and Moore… Again, not lack of trying, just bad player evaluation or coaching utilization (probably some combo of both)
On a related note, its interesting that historically, we have absolutely SUCKED at drafting receivers…you can count on one hand the quality WRs we have drafted going back decades…I would say Toon, Wesley Walker, GW…anyone else? Cotchery was good to very good, but not ever really a great WR…there may be a couple others I’m forgetting now, but can’t be many And compare that to the busts we’ve drafted…guys like Lam Jones, Mims, Moore, Stephen Hill, I’m sure we can count a ton of others. Probably has something to do with the consistently crappy QBs we’ve had, but its not like any of those guys who failed here went on to big success anywhere else either… I wonder why we have been so terrible at evaluating WR quality for decades…especially when other teams, notably the Steelers, typically have great success at that spot…they seem to find great receivers even late in the draft quite often…Antonio Brown, while proven to be a headcase, was a great WR for them and he was a late round pick…
Yup. You nailed it. We've gone offense up the ying yang but our decisions have been poor. Its execution rather than strategy thats failed.
Seems like some of the guys he signed/deafted on the OL couldn't play on this team but once they were signed to another team became serviceable. Chuma Fant VanRoten etc
I agree that the Jets need a change in philosophy, but not so much offense or defense. They need someone who has a little bit of ability, which I'm saying sarcastically, but an ability to assess what he has, what he needs, and what he's playing against. The Jets do everything in a vacuum based on how they want to do it without ever making any adjustments to the actual situation. Until Woody Johnson wises up and hires the right guy(s), we will be stuck in a cycle of mediocrity with some flashes of lucky results.
It's not that he ignores offense, it's that the entire team doesn't know how to build a good one. IOW: they've spent lots of money of trying to build a good offense, but because they don't have a philosophy or blueprint they don't know what they're doing - it's a scattershot approach, throwing lots of stuff against the wall and seeing what sticks.
I think that was just desperation by Woody Johnson. Both for his pocket by having a big name, and as an ill advised half assed attempt to fix a position that has been holding them back - and also because people told him that they just needed a quarterback. If you look back the Jets moves over the years, a lot of them are based on what the public perceives and never on, at least as far as we know, what they themselves believe (if they even have a belief system). We need an offensive guy after so many defensive guys, here comes Adam Gase. We need a CEO type who is not quiet on the sidelines, here comes Robert Saleh. We need someone quiet after Rex Ryan, here comes Todd Bowles. We need a spark, Sanchez is suffering, here comes Tim Tebow. We need Brett Favre! And on and on and on. Everything is a reaction to the previous circumstances. Like a guy who dates someone with small boobs, decides he wants a big boobs, and voila, his next girlfriend has big boobs.
The 49ers deserve some credit for drafting Purdy, but almost all of it was luck. If they had the slightest idea of what he would have become, they'd have drafted him rounds earlier rather than risk another team getting him. But the 49ers do deserve credit for developing him, and for being open to starting him even though he was drafted so low.
We hired a defensive head coach. Because of that, and specifically because of Saleh's system which demands being loaded at DL, we've way overspent resources on DL. Lawson, JJ, McDonald, etc. McDonald specifically cost us a very good WR prospect. It's partly that we neglect offense and partly that we have failed to acquire good personnel for offense despite trying to. We shouldn't have traded up for AVT, the original picks would've helped us build the line better. We should've taken Wirfs over Becton, that would've been another OL spot filled. We shouldn't have acquired Lazard or Cook. My overall point is we've spent more resources on defense, particularly DL, when we should've been spending more resources on offense. Those resources include coaches and players. Offense is how you get to the playoffs. Defense helps you win a Super Bowl once you've made the playoffs.
I’ll never understand why a defensive regime will ignore offense. Do they forget what they work so hard to stop every week, and how that could possible compliment what they are doing?
i think they have a vision; the issue might be execution his first year JD was drafting character guys, ex- team captains etc. They dog-housed malcontents etc. And while it's immensely frustrating to have all the loses the draft the year before this one was borderline epic. Sauce, GW, JJ, Hall the reality is the game is incredibly competitive and with a relatively short season (by pro sports standards) it's tough to really succeed because a flubbed game here or there because of new players or new schemes really hurts. In baseball or basketball there's plenty of games to iron those out. There have been good/great teams (or recently good/great that are as bad as or worse than we are right now, eg., Pats So i think vision is important, but execution maybe more so, and resilience and patience are critical. Drastic changes in philosophy and scheme can be very costly because roster might need adjustment and people need to learn Saleh worries me.
I don't think they've ignored the offense they just haven't done it very well - two high draft picks spent on o-line and one is a bust and one can't stay healthy, the receivers and tight ends they've drafted (other than Wilson) haven't panned out but the biggest issue by miles is we haven't had a good QB - the QBs they have drafted have been major busts and Rodgers got crocked 2 minutes into the season - the Jets haven't had a true franchise QB in decades
Was he really though? His first-ever pick was Becton who failed a drug test at the combine. Now, I have no problem if a player smokes weed, but if you fail the combine drug test you're a massive idiot. It's just incredibly dumb. It's the biggest job interview of your life that will set your family up financially for generations going forward and you can't stop smoking for a month beforehand? Lo and behold, Becton has turned out to have effort and character issues during his time in the league. It's also not exactly surprising that a guy with a weed addiction also had weight issues.
I don't know all the details about what Becton's drug test found/didn't find, but in general if you test positive for a drug at the combine you're either a moron or have an addiction problem.
