?

Keep a high pick and take another swing at a young QB, or do they trade it for a king's ransom?

  1. Keep it and take the highest rated QB they can get.

Isn't that a definition of a back-up though? If a QB is consistent and reliable, that's a starter. There are a few really good back-ups in NFL. I would say Minshew is one, Brissett may be another. But Minshew this year at least statistically has not done much better than Zach. He does have 5 points more passer rating (83 vs 78), but has thrown 10 less yards per game. Worth mentioning though that the Colts have top 10 O line in NFL. I would like to know how Minshew would do here with bottom 2 line in the NFL. Flacco is definitely doing better in Cleveland with a better OLine than he did here.

The problem is that the Jets are missing the most basic ingredient for success: a decent OLine. That will greatly impact any back-up QB. I am not even saying we need top 10, but bottom 2 is pathetic. What I have seen from Zach so far, I am not sure I can say that even Minshew would be better. And it could be a lot worse. At the end of last year after AVT was out and then CMG's play declined in the last quarter of the year even with better receivers Mike White amassed 47 passer rating and Flacco 66. This year Boyle and Siemian - 55 each. Granted Trevor only played little, but there is a reason the guy was behind Boyle and never got an opportunity to start. I personally wanted Wentz instead of Siemian but I have my doubts how successful he would be with shit line, I don't think very much.

The point is with such shit of the OLine, any back-up QB will fail and some starters too. And Zach though struggled and wasn't good overall (who can look good with constant pressure, seriously, aside from Burrow?), may not be worse than the alternatives that may be available.

I agree with the bulk of your post, including backup QBs. But this year a lot of backups have stepped up. The Bengals, Vikings, Colts and Giants all had backups that have kept their teams competitive. The big two that haven't are the Jets and Chargers. But the Chargers turned to a 5th round pick and we went back to the 2nd pick overall - and I'm still not sure we have the better option.

I don't know, Ouchy, how DeVito or other guys would do in our system. Not that DeVito is doing all that great now: averaging 142 years passing and POW was BS. Which is why I wanted Wentz, we could have started him and see. Instead JD got Boyle and Siemian. But whatever sample size we have going back to end of last year with below average to bad OCs and terrible OLine, every QB we had did poorly. Heck even Rodgers in his 3 snaps managed to looked lost before getting injured when the line failed. I just have a hard time imagining DeVito or even Minshew would do much better. Again, JD fucked by not getting someone better than Boymian, when he could have had Wentz, but it's just hard to imagine any back-up succeeding with no line, one good WR, and Hack as OC.

At this point I think the Jets could draft Trevor Lawrence/Andrew Luck/etc and they would then surround them with the worst group of players ever to wear a uniform.

Yea that’s true. We really need to stop hiring defensive coaches if we are serious about competing regularly. Or at least ones who have zero idea about how modern offenses work.

I know I have been banging the Woody drum lately, but he needs to step completely away from the football operation and hire someone with football sense to run it... and to hold the GM accountable when it actually needs to happen, not when it shows up on an earnings report for ticket sales.

Woody treats the football operation like it's a front for his advertising firm.

It was only a few years ago that they finally structured the GM/HC hierarchy properly as before they both reported to Woody directly. I think JD is the first GM for the Jets in ages where he is above the head coach in job title and the head coach reports to him. So maybe he's slowly starting to realizing he's a football moron.

Having the GM and head coach report to the owner might work if your owner isn't a trust fund kid, but alas.

Personally we will not be high enough to grab Harrison Jr but if for some crazy reason he is available at our pick he is definitely the pick.

If Alt is gone, I am taking Coleman or Bowers and thats it.

Because the other defensive minded head coach helped build a good defense ;)

Yea let’s just hope this experience doesn’t validate his prior thoughts and he changes it again. That setup never made sense to me.
