After watching the AFC wild-card weekend and the AFC divisional rounds one thing has really stood out to me that is pretty obvious but truer than ever. DEFENSE WINS CHAMPIONSHIPS. Manning and Brady didn't play their best games against the Chargers or Ravens but their teams still found a way to win.

Now my question. How do we feel about Bob Sutton? It was our first year in our 3-4 defensive scheme and obviously we know we need to improve. Do we think he is the guy for us or not.

I personally don't think he has much of a say, I figure Mangini is the one that comes up with most of the defense and gameplaning. But for some reason I ain't too high on our DC. Mainly because of the Pat's game last week. I felt that our only gameplan was to blitz and after Tom Brady continuously kept finding men open we still kept on blitzing. I don't know why we didn't get the hint that maybe we should drop back and cover more and I am blaming this mostly on Sutton knowing that earlier in the season he was the one that fell in love with the blitzes. Just throwing this out there and see you guys reactions. I know there was a few of us that said we should get the guy from Oakland so I am guessing there are a few of us that feel the same as I do.

I'm split on this one between yes he did OK and give it another year (or 2). Transitioning like we have done is hard on everyone and toward the end of the season their was vast improvement. So all in all BS in my mind has done a good job.
If there were one critism it would be that when we are ahead we employ this bend don't bteak strategy that has sometimes nearly cost us .

I don't know - is he Mangini's puppet? Would we do better with somebody who had his own ideas? Split, voted no.

If he is Manginis' puppet this could be a positive thing rather than bad. Mangini is D guy and probably always will be , if what he needs is someone to carry out his insructions and Sutton does that , maybe thats a good thing. If however we had Donnie Henderson ( or similar) back , expect a clash of differences.

It wasn't about Bob Sutton, it was about the players we had. We have alot of talented guys but a few aren't best suited for the 3-4 and I think Bob and the players did a great job in the 2nd half adjusting to the talent. Would I love a Rob Ryan? Absolutely but I wouldn't let Bob go just for the sake of letting him go. I think mangini had ALOT of input into the defense as well so this isn't all on Bob.

    Succinctly put

I'm really pumped that all the coaches have worked so well together in their first year. The guy I really would be sad to see go is Westhoff, and I can't believe with all the HC jobs flying about that hes not even a candidate.

Don't you think SD and Baltimore have better personnel than the Jets?Especially on the DL.Especially SD.Besides Ellis, which DL on the Jets would you take over the SD DL?

Rob Ryan is under contract with the Raiders.Al Davis will hire a young offensive HC and retain Ryan to run the defense

Hes not that bad. I think we need to blitz more with less guys, which means we need a dominate pass rusher. Something we just do not have.

I'm not really sold on Sutton, he did well with what he had but I don't think the run defense should have been that bad.

I think Sutton was fine. Our inability to get to Brady was not Sutton's fault. NE was picking up our blitz packages quite well, unlike the November game.

We are not quite where we should be in the D backfield yet. We also, still need an oak tree in the middle. We must get better at stopping the run.

I think Sutton should get at least another year. Plus, this continues the continuity. We really need the draft and FA to come through for us this off-season, too.

I dont think you would see much to any change if we did get a new DC, I think your much better off keeping him so we have continuity for the players instead of getting a new coach every year. Bob Sutton seems to know all of the players strengths and weakness's. Now we can do an even better job of fitting players into the scheme.

I voted for the #1 choice cause I think he did terrific with the players he had. It would be better to jidge him after we have some dominating players on D then I bet nobody would even start a poll of this type

Sutton is the coach you never hear about. I have a feeling that he's not as creative as Shottenjunior but that he's just a guy who knows the 3-4 very well.

IMHO hard to be creative when you do not have the horses to be creative

Its hard to assess this guy. The first thing I think about is where was our defense till the the 2nd half of the Clevland game? Did Magini get up in his face ? Did He just turn them loose thinking "Damb we are getting beat by an inferior team." Its hard to know what was happening on the side lines. Just like everyone else he get a pass for this rebuilding year.

Patriot's defensive rankings last four years and their DC's:

    2003..... 7th Romeo Crennel
    2004..... 8th Romeo Crennel
    2005..... 26th Eric Mangini
    2006..... 6th Dean Pees

Jets defensive rankings last four years and their DC's:

    2003..... 21st Ted Cotrell
    2004..... 7th Donnie Henderson
    2005..... 12th Donnie Henderson
    2006..... 20th Bob Sutton

    Mangini = overated.

In 2005 the Patriots were the 4th most penalized defensive unit in the NFL under Mangini
In 2006 the Jets were the 4th most penalized defensive unit in the NFL.

So much for tough, smart, players who don't make mistakes.

Instead of the usual rants, how about a valid explanation for Mangini led defenses with two different franchises, other than 'I love him', 'he's a genious', 'He's not Herman Edwards' and anyone who disagrees is a traitor and not a Jet fan.

Fixing the defense... hire a competent DC like Rob Ryan of the Raiders or Dom Capers of Miami (he hasn't signed the contract he agreed to yet) and keep Mangini away from any input.

How would you fix the defense?

Sutton did a solid if unspectacular job the second half of the season. The Jets D improved over the course of the season which is a sign of good coaching in my opinion (regardless of the teams they played). Hopefully, Sutton will get the horses to correct the glaring weaknesses (rush defense/pass rush)
