Anyone of us on this board could have run through that hole. I say only give up a first rounder if we can get that Guard Gott as well. Then I think we have ourselves a deal. I still say no way on giving up a high first day pick on a back up. I preface that by saying I do not care who the player is backing up.
I remember the Jets working something out with Baltimore about Cutler; i'm sure we can do something similar with the Chargers about Turner, and whoever falls.
Turner is the real deal. This is not about trading for Jolly. Schottenheimer loves him. We can still get an OLB or Lineman later on. I would be happy if we did it. Try to pawn off the high second first.
You have to look at it this way. if Turner is in this draft, where does he get picked? if you say he'd go to[ 25, then you have to do it.
no thanks, this team is not ready to use a first round pick on a back. They have plenty of holes on both lines that are more pressing then getting a skill player.
Well just to sign him, no questions asked, no rejection from SD, we'd have to give up the 1st. We can then sign him to a sweet deal, with a clause that says if he plays more than 2 game in California in 2007, his contract goes up to 10M in 2007 (that's how Seattle got Burleson and Minnesota got Hutchinson), but we'd lose the 1st rounder. Instead, we could deal with them, maybe our 1st for Turner and their 3rd?
All i really can say is if we do sign michael turner he could return kickoffs for us and we put leon washington back there to return punts
I think a 2nd rounder is more than enough. We got a late 1st rounder for Abraham. Why should be give up a 1st rounder for a backup RB? We could get him for free in 08. San Diego knows that. They HAVE to trade him away. Do you think they would chose him and his 50 carries in 08 over a 2nd round pick? I doubt it.
Our number one need is an upgrade somewhere on the offensive line in order to establish a running game. Turner runs behind one of the/the best offensive lines in the NFL. Our line isn't close to that good. We need another OG/RT and then we can talk about RBs. However, if we do get a couple of nice offensive lineman in free agency, I think that Houston/Washington will be very effective.
But SD has to AGREE then. You can sign him for the 1st and SD only gets the right to match the deal.. nothing more. If you try to do it for a second, you actually can't, you have to work a deal with SD.
i'll leave these decisions to the personel folks up stairs. For the sake of giving an opinion...turner is as proven as any rookie in the draft, and he's going to want a bigger contract....for what its worth i'll roll on the rook
Sure, they have to agree. If you offer them a 2nd round pick they will agree. Thats just my opinion. If they really think they could get a 1st round pick for Turner...well they've to be pretty retarded. Its not gonna happen. He's a backup. He wont get many carries next year. Their primary KR/PR Sproles will be back next year. They just dont need Turner anymore. The Chargers will put a 1st round tender on him just to make sure he doesnt leave for a 5th rounder (thats when they drafted him i believe). But that doesnt mean they wouldnt trade him for a 2nd or a 3rd + (McCareins maybe? Makes sense after watching SD's receivers drop so many passes).
The fact that he is a backup doesn't mean everything since there are a lot of teams who feel he can start and be a really good starter in this league. It's not like we'd be getting Kevan Barlow. I'm not sure if I'd spend a first on him, I would have to look at the draft more and see who we could expect to be able to spend our pick on. But I wouldn't completely dismiss the idea now either. Gotta wait and see how this shakes out, what type of interest Turner is getting and if we think we could get something better with our first rounder in the draft.
Sure it does. He's a backup, he gets like 50 carries a season. You cant give up a 1st round pick on a guy like that. The day somebody DOES i think we've found the dumbest front office in the NFL. I mean the Raiders drafted a kicker in the 1st round so who knows.
