Seems similar to what the Jets did with Wilson. Draft a QB high, hire a defensive coordinator as HC and brought in the passing game coordinator from 49ers to call plays for the first time. Similar set-ups so I think maybe it just comes down to one QB not being as good as the other
Are you really claiming that a HC has nothing to do with the development and in game decisions that impact a QB? LOL!
I think he's referring to the quantity of games Zach has played. He's only got 26 games under his belt. In a 17 game season, that's around 1.5 seasons of accumulated experience even though he's on year 3.
He's correct though. It just like Mike White has been in the league 5 years and is a bottom tier QB. Hopefully by year 5 Wilson won't be the kind of crap White is. Fingers crossed.
I know that's normally the reality in the modern NFL, but it's counterproductive and more than a little foolish. It's one of the reasons there are so few good QBs in the NFL. It's really weird. It's the most important position on a team, yet, instead of grooming them, making sure that they are ready to play and have everything as much as possible prepared to give the QB the best chance to succeed, they just throw him to the wolves and it's sink or swim. That's a really stupid way to go about it. In the Jets situation, there was that time. JD had a 6-year contract, and Saleh a 4 or 5-year deal. The OL was shit, there were no weapons in place. They were saying that they were not going to ask Zach to carry the team, but in reality, that's what they were doing, all while he was having to learn the most complex offense in football, and make major changes to his footwork and approach to playing QB. I'm an educator and trainer, developer of talent, and I'm telling you that the Jets couldn't possibly have done things more wrong. They gave him no chance to succeed with the way they did things. He has been bad, really bad, but unless he was superhuman, there was never going to be any way in which he could have been good. He perhaps could have been less bad. How has "trying to find someone else who will" worked out for the Jets and other NFL teams? The clear, definitive answer is that 99% of the time it doesn't. It's dismal failure. The only thing that makes any sense is to take a slower, more patient, methodical, sound educational approach to developing QBs. If they don't they might as well go back to the 3 yards and a cloud of dust style of football.
Exactly! If they're going to go with that approach, then the offensive scheme HAS to be one identical to or very close to the one the player played in at college, and there had better be plenty of weapons and a solid OL in front of him; otherwise, the QB is going to struggle and fail more often than not. Also, what's that definition of "insanity" again? Oh yeah, it's continuing to do things in the same way that have rarely worked before, yet expecting a different result.
What you are describing is a 2nd/3rd round QB. No QB taken in the top 5 should sit more than a half dozen games. The fireable offense is taking that QB 2nd overall.
If every GM was fired for whiffing on a high draft QB they would pretty much all be fired. You'd have to fire john lynch from SF who whiffed on try lance 3rd overall, not to mention traded a bunch of picks to get that high, only to turn around and trade him after 2 seasons for a 4th rounder.
they have the best team in the whole league, Lynch more than made up for it. We are in last place... again
I’m just not understanding this completely. To get away from the obvious CJ Stroud example, what about Tua? He started midway the same amount of games his rookie year with the 22nd ranked running game in the league and his two leading receivers being guys who are barely starting on a terrible New England team. For what it’s worth he’s also on his third offensive system in three years. Did Kyler Murray have some sort of elite support system around him in Arizona? He had 85 year old Larry Fitzgerald and a bunch of offensive players who are lucky to be backups around the league in the coming years. That offense also allowed 50 sacks that year. Idunno, the support system thing is so overdone by you and the faithfuls.
yup. Besides Zach Wilson is playing with one of the most talented WRs in the whole game. Sanchez, Geno Smith, Darnold, etc never had a wideout as good as Garrett Wilson. No more excuses
IT seems to be going pretty well for the 49ers, Kyler was a hell of an improvement over Rosen in AZ (the jury's still out on how good he will be long term) , CJ stroud seems to be a lot better than Davis Mills...
he said drafting a QB that high and them being a bust is a fireable offense. they also haven't lost their starting QB for the year and we are only 4 games in and we had the toughest start for the 1st 6 games. even with rodgers many expected to be 2-4 to start the season off. he didn't specify any other conditions. I only pointed it out to show how insane of a take it is. you have to look at any GM as a whole
