It's all part of it though. Tom Brady was notorious for QB sneaks. It was as much of his game as everything else. Wilson still had to make the play and he did. I think some of the decision making on offense had more to do with the overwhelming confidence in the defense at the end.
First, the new artificial turf (Astroturf hasn't been used in decades) installed this year did not cause the injury to Rodgers. More important, Rodgers would not have been in this part of the country if Joe Douglas didn't bring him here. The second draft pick in 2021was made by Joe Douglas, necessitating bringing a replacement QB to the Jets two years later. Joe Douglas is also responsible for the offensive line the Jets fielded Monday night. Joe Douglas is responsible for every other Jets player and coach who was on the field Monday. What logic gives him a pass on anything?
I still can't believe that the merits of Zachary Wilson is one of our main discussions here in week 2 of 2023. 12 whole months of the same old same. So depressing!
Most passing plays are drawn up for one side of the field or the other. Both 1st and 2nd options are usually in the same field of view. It's not till the outlet WR that the play may switch sides of the field. It just takes to many mili-seconds to switch sides and look for your 2nd option and also where all the defenders are on that side. Zach doesn't have to see the whole field every pass play. Of course it'd be great, but not necessary for a serviceable QB. This is where play design and play calling come in.
Actually, most NFL quarterbacks are getting a completion on that play. Garrett Wilson was open crossing the middle three yards deep and somebody else, probably Cobb, was all alone a yard deep out by the numbers. While that was developing Zach Wilson took a couple of extra steps back then turned and fled a total of 28 yards before lofting it out of bounds.
What you refuse to acknowledge is that the first two years are not "forgettable" just because they interfere with your agenda. For those who can realistically look at his entire body of work they tell the tale you refuse to admit - Zach Wilson has never shown he can consistently, competently quarterback an NFL team. If you want to hang your hat on the remote possibility that he gets hit by lightning and becomes a completely different player than he has ever been, that's fine for you but many of us need more than hopes and dreams, we need results. How many games must the Jets sacrifice while we wait for the bolt from the blue?
No they aren’t. It was a screen to carter. 30 other NFL QBs throw that ball into the dirt at carters feet. Not run 30 yards around like fran tarkenton
No quarterback anywhere is making a completion to the right side if they never turn their head beyond the center. Those who can see the whole field pick up a few yards there before running to catch a bus at the next corner.
There was literally no chance to ever make a pass to anywhere else but Carter. Watch the clip I posted of the play. By the time zach turned right there were 2 guys in his face. The ball needed to be dirted instead of running around like a chicken with his head cut off. There was also an illegal man downfield penalty on it which even further solidifies it was a screen. Watch the play.
I watched the clip - many times, frame by frame. There is "literally no chance to ever make a pass" if you don't look for the receivers. Garrett Wilson was in front of his coverage the entire play. The other guy I think was Cobb had no one on him as the defense had dropped back on the snap with the two guys going deeper - there was nobody within eight yards of him in any direction. Neither one looked like they were improvising, there was no reason to - they were right where they were supposed to be. And this was before Carter was free. Look at it again and at the time Wilson is backpedaling from the 33 to the 35 before turning tail Garrett Wilson and (probably) Cobb are easy targets.
There’s no way you can watch that video and tell me “most” NFL quarterbacks are completing a pass. It was a screen, it was designed and that was the only option, the ball needed to be out in a second or the play was over. The ball couldn’t come out because Carter was blanketed. He was backpedaling and had three defenders in his face. An NFL QB that tries to throw that ball isn’t a good one.
When you run backwards 30 yards you have to throw it 40+ on the run just to get it over the line of scrimmage and out of bounds
Disagree completely; just watch the play a couple of times and stop staring at Carter. The good QBs could have hit either guy I pointed out; the average ones could have hit one or the other. None of them would have seen them if they never looked to the right.
Wilson should run more… forward I mean. He took off and ran and picked up a 1st down in that game, that’s all he needs to do. He’s never gonna live up to his draft status and he mostly sucks, but with this defense, first downs on offense will be like gold. Get them anyway possible to control the clock and grind out wins
most QBs don’t look beyond their first read anymore. Nobody does on a designed screen pass He shoulda just threw the pass into the dirt and moved on
I guess I’d say you should stop looking at the receivers and look at Carter. Three blockers stop blocking and set up a screen. The ball can only go one place when that happens and that wasn’t available. Any good QB is putting the ball in the dirt there, they aren’t running 30 yards backwards and they sure as hell aren’t going to try and get the ball to a WR because they most likely physically can’t. You can absolutely get on Zach for this play but not for the reasons you are.
I hear you and have never denied the play was a screen but Zach Wilson knew at least where Garrett Wilson was because he shot a quick look at him as the play started and possibly again before he headed for the hills.
That does not equal “he could have thrown to Garrett Wilson”. It’s a screen. Wilson’s job is to get the CB and probably the safety that’s doubling him out of the OL/Carter’s way. This is an unbelievably routine thing in the NFL. Screens get blown up, the quarterback throws the ball into the dirt because that is the one and only option for that play, plays over and you move on. The only actual problem with this play is Zach tried to make something out of it and almost lost 20 yards in the process. Milano played it perfectly. He smartly stayed on Carter knowing we probably weren’t throwing long and Carter would be one of the first few options on the play. Duane Brown was left with his dick in his hands covering no one because Milano never rushed. Or… Milano was just following his assignments. Either way, Zach not throwing to a WR should be commended in this scenario not criticized.
Big agree on the running part (north and south). He’s athletic as hell. We’ve seen it multiple times. There’s no reason why he can’t pick up a few first downs a game with his legs
