Daniel Jones is going to be an insurance salesman before this is all over if $45M a year is his drop dead price. He's a middle of the road QB with a bit of upside. Maybe the 12th-16th best QB at this point. I'm thinking if he wants a lot of guarantees they come with a $28M a year cap hit max. That doesn't mean scarcity won't drive his price up but he's not quite as good as Kirk Cousins was when he went free. Just looked at his career in depth a bit more and at his "career" season last year. 16th best QB is being generous.
The money these QBs want and get now is insane. Something will have to be done or they are going to end up getting 50 per cent of a team's cap within a few more years. Imagine a teammate looking at an average QB like Jones and realising he's earning 45 times as much money.
QB's are over-rated precisely because teams build the team then add the QB and win. Then usually the team declines as the outsize share of the cap the QB demands forces the loss of other key ingredients. The trick probably is winning with the young guy on his first contract and then *letting him go*. This allows you to maintain much of the rest of the roster so that when you add the QB (cheaply) again you are good to go. Hard to market that but I am pretty sure it's the sweet spot for being a dynasty over decades.
Carr and Jones are going to get similar money. It’s not going to be 45M, but it’s going to be higher than their level of play. For reference: Russell Wilson at 49M per Kyler Murray and Deshean Watson at 46M Mahomes at 45M Allen at 43M Stafford and Prescott at 40M Cousins at 35M Goff at 33.5M Wentz af 32M Matt Ryan at 30M Hurts and Burrow are going to top 50M. Only the few elite ones are worth it, but they all get it.
I think Burrow and Herbert might push $75 million per to be honest. The Sunday Ticket-Google money kicks in next year and the cap is supposed to rise pretty significantly when they are due. The NFL needs to figure out a way to make them exempt from the cap or give teams X amount of money they can hide from QB’s cap number. There’s no fair way to do that for the rest of the players in the league but I’m sure some smart folks can come up with a decent idea to fix it.
They were discussing this on ESPN radio, and somebody had a report that this wasn't true and Jones was really looking for high 30s. Of course nobody actually knows, but $45m seems pretty high for him, that would put him as a top 5 paid QB.
If Jones gets more than the average QB numbers he is ripping somebody off. Seriously, he's a below average QB at this point. If I was looking at him I would offer 3 years/$75M tops.
Jones doesn't impress me one bit. if Giants overpay him and end up with crippled roster they might regret. Daboll seems to be the real deal so if so, he should be able to gran a QB in this draft and build around him for next 5 years or so.
Shocking. The top three paid QB contracts are a farce. It’s embarrassing to have them over Mahomes and Allen, with Borrows, Herbert and Hurt far better than the top three paid just licking their chops. Wentz and Ryan salaries are highway robberies. And people think Carr is too expensive.?
I'm looking to get a similar salary too.... the guy at the convenience store wished me luck when I bought that powerball ticket. That was nice of him
Carr and Jones are about to be the next overpaid underperforming QB signings imo. They gonna get at least 40 per range I’d think, and there’s no way they deserve Allen or Mahomes level money.
You are spot on. I’m guessing Carr will end up around 35M, which extrapolated would equate to Mahomes worth 70M. We have gone mad with the rates, thanks to the likes of Houston and Denver.
OK I am just about ready to give up on the Jets and all the QB aggravation. Jones is 10-15 million per year QB who had ONE good year smh..he wants 40m?? are you kidding? Rogers and Carr are way better chances. That investment would hopefully be worth it ..I say hopefully because we have a shit CS and maybe 3-4 premier players: 2 ROTY and couple of guys on Defense meh
