If Douglas goes the Jimmy G. route do you re-sign Mike White or go more durable with Minshew or Brissett?
Sit Rogers down and show him a video of Messier winning the cup. Messier became an instant NY legend when he delivered the Stanley cup after a 50 year drought. No matter what people think of Rogers personally- if he delivers a SB trophy he becomes a legend. And if he fails, remind him that Favre bombed miserably and also flashed dick picks and still barely anyone remembers. So there’s nothing to lose. Rogers has a big ego, we need to remind him the prize of winning in NY.
The thing to remember in all of this is that he hasn't been able to get the Packers to the promised land in a decade and he was younger, better and in a scheme designed to fit him in Green Bay. Bringing him to the Jets would feel great but there's no guarantee he makes us a better team. If we have to ditch a lot of vets to fit him in under the cap it's almost certain he won't make us better in the process. If he gets hurt after we do that? Well that's the scenario in which we are just worse off all around.
Actually his hit for 2023 could be as high as $58M for the acquiring team depending on how the Packers handle the bonus situation. If they choose not to pay it out then it becomes guaranteed salary and all of that amount hits the cap this season. There's also a $47M bonus next year that has the same clause. Pay it or it becomes guaranteed salary. Assuming the Jets cannot get the Packers to pay out a lot of the bonus this year before a trade the amount that Rodgers is guaranteed over the next two years is $105M. That's a huge amount to put on your cap in any scenario with a 40 year old player. I actually do not think that the Johnson's will sign off on the trade in any scenario in which the Packers do not pay a lot of this year's bonus before a trade. They've made some whackadoodle money-on-fire free agent acquisitions recently but no matter how you break things up $105M guaranteed is a lot of money to pay out over two years, much more than they have ever paid out to a single player over that type of timeframe. There's a pretty good argument that for relieving the Packers of that burden the Jets should be receiving 1st round picks in the deal not giving them up.
“Rodgers does not have a no trade clause in his contract so he could be traded to a team as well. The timing of the option should give the Packers all the way until the end of training camp to move him. The cap charge here would depend on when he was traded. If Rodgers were to be traded prior to June 1st the Packers would take on a $40,313,750 cap hit in 2023. If he was traded after June 1st it would be a $15,833,570 cap hit in 2023 with $24,480,000 due in 2024.” I have seen this mentioned several times that Packers need to wait until June to trade him. In that case it would cost none of this years picks and next years can easily be tied to games played and performance.
It's really complicated but basically unless the receiving team is willing to take on that guaranteed option bonus their cap hit will be much more this year and next and in future years. He got $40.8M in bonus last year and is due $58.3M in bonus this year and $47M in bonus next year. Any part of the two option bonuses that is not converted to guaranteed salary per the clause is going to have to be cleared by the Packers and paid out upon the trade. You have to pay guaranteed bonuses out at the time you trade the player.
Incorrect. Everyone on this board who’s read a single article in Rogers cap hits, knows you’re incorrect. Not complicated but too complicated for you
The articles are wrong. They don't understand the option bonus that is scheduled to be paid out between March 17th and week one. It's like any other option bonus that is guaranteed. It needs to be either declined as of the trade, which turns that money into guaranteed salary or it needs to be cleared and paid out by the trade. If the Packers decline and turn it into guaranteed salary then they are only on the hook for money's paid out already as of that point. However the receiving team then has an enormous guaranteed salary on the books for 2023. If the receiving team then turns around and converts the guaranteed salary into a bonus they also have a $47M option bonus due in '24 which they will likely have to do the same for unless Rodgers is released before the 5th day of the 2024 league year. Overthecap says the total guaranteed money in the deal is $101.4M but $150M is guaranteed for injury. This would suggest that the $47M due in 2024 is guaranteed for injury.
And to your point, I think Aaron Rodgers wouldn't want to be traded for a kings ransom. He wants the Jets to have draft capital so they can draft another lineman, or just get more weapons he might desire. Aaron Rodgers would understand that by coming here it automatically shifts Jets land into "SB or bust" mode. I also believe of all of the AFC suitors there are he wants to land with the Jets. He thinks he'll have a great opportunity for another SB with the Jets....
Since you reference Overthecap, here’s an article where they really dumb it down. Hopefully it helps. https://overthecap.com/the-salary-cap-impact-of-trading-for-aaron-rodgers/amp
Of course. Getting Rodgers is the biggest no Brainer. And still believe it or not there's a whole lot of dingbats pissing and moaning like only Jets fans know how to do. The Jets fan base is the very most embarrassing base to associate yourself with. Lol They'd piss and moan if we got Peyton Manning in his rookie season But adding Aaron Rodgers immediately makes the Jets a legit playoff team primed to make a deep run into the playoffs.
