Do you mean this year only, as in only grading him based on what he did since last season ended? Or his overall grade for his tenure as Jets GM through this year? I'd grade his 2022 offseason as an A-/B+, whereas I'd grade his 2020 and 2021 offseasons as F for both. So his overall grade would be a C- at best.
I'd give him a solid C. It would be an A if it were just about talent acquisition. On paper, this is the best Jets team we've seen since Rex's first two years. If it were about coaching hires, then he gets a flat F-. He whiffed hard on Saleh and his coaching staff. So, split the difference and you get a C.
Record wise the worst GM we've ever had, he had a good draft this year, but failed miserably in the most important draft pick, QB Wilson, his FA signings have been Meh, still hasn't fixed the offensive line, but that doesn't matter when you don't have a QB
The existence of Braden Mann on the roster, above everything else, makes me question the sanity of JD.
Keep in mind that Joe Douglas is responsible for the coaching staff as well as the players; the "separate but equal" philosophy of the past is gone, Douglas owns it all.
B+ this year. I think his two biggest mistakes were not having a legit backup QB and basically have 0 linebackers besides Mosley. But he killed the draft and made some solid signings.
Yet again has failed to deliver the most important piece of any NFL franchise by a country mile - which is a competent QB - got lucky this year with some hits in the draft but his free agency pickups have been bad and his drafts before this have been poor also
A C average. Lawson, and Tomlinson haven't worked out. The Zach Wilson pick is a freaking disaster. Sauce and AVT, G Wilson, Clemons perhaps considering where we got him, But those FA signings and the Zach pick sinks him down. Has to be the case. Oh I forgot hiring Saleh as well oops.
Same record 3 yrs in as when he inherited the team. Worst overall record as Jet GM ever. Now we are up against the cap again as well
He gets a C this year for actually not wasting draft capital on small school shit and an F- for previous seasons.
B - B+. The team is definitely better, but the OL still sucks, and we still don't have the FQB. Is that due to a misjudgment on Wilson, or the wrong CS to develop him (or any other QB)? In either case it falls on Douglas and he needs to fix it. The defense was definitely upgrade with talent, but faltered down the stretch. I put that more on the CS than Douglas, but he has to find some more pieces - LB and S - to make this a true playoff caliber defense.
I love JD .. but I have serious doubts on his ability to properly evaluate a QB. That's obviously a big problem If he can't.
He has unquestionable brought a lot of talent to the squad and has created a team that is at the level of competing for a playoff spot. Sauce, G Wilson, AVT, Breece et all. Has tried to address O-Line but still hasn't figured that out. The Becton pick hurts. The biggest influence he had on the team, however, is giving us the biggest QB bust since JaMarcus Russell with the #2 pick. For this, I cannot give him any higher than a D+. QB is the most important position in the game and he failed + traded for Flacco when he obviously doesn't want to play & the CS doesn't want to play him. Mike White is a solid spot starter & backup, but you can't miss on this position and say everything is fine. Grade: D+
