La Canfora is a troll and has no valid reporting these days. He is the new Peter Vescey of sports news
The OC is not incompetent. I agree he needs to improve on play calling, but his play designs are fantastic. His pass play designs are anyway. They literally have an answer for just about every defense it faces that creates a mismatch on the field. It was disgusting watching all 22’s seeing how many WR’s we’re breaking open that Zach was blatantly disregarding. I think with a competent QB and a decent running game you’d see a little more balance on play calls. He needs to improve. So does Saleh and Douglas to be blunt, but to fire him would be a huge mistake.
I still remember him proudly flying to Tampa to announce Brett Favre’s singing with the Bucs, only to have to sheepishly report from an empty Bucs stadium that Facre signed with the Jets. He was so cocky about reporting his inside sources stating Fabre would be signing in TB for certain.
I honestly had not heard of La Canfora being a hack until this thread. I'm not saying you guys are wrong though, I just figured he was another run of the mill NFL beat reporter. Sometimes those guys are wrong. I'm not too sure he's wrong about Woody & Saleh though. That release was strategically timed, makes you think it may have come from the owners box
He was the guy that NFL Network tried to replace Schefter with, but he failed miserably. I think he bounced around a couple of cable networks and now he is apparently good friends with billionaire NFL owners and gets the straight gossip directly from them. He had dissolved into obscurity for a while there but I think he accidently predicted something right and people started listening to him again. Kind of like that coin flip thing until it stopped being right.
Peter Vecsey is a legendary NBA columnist who started the entire insider/gossip style of reporting in basketball and/or other sports.
Agreed. But how did the Jets scouting people, Saleh, and Douglas miss SO BADLY on Zach's ability to read defenses ? Saleh was a DC, you'd think he'd know exactly what questions to ask a prospective QB and also diagram and visually test him with relevant scenarios during the pre-draft runup. Why did Daniel Kelly, a kid who worked under Parcells, nail it so perfectly 2 months before the 2021 draft ? NOBODY can predict if you can hit WR's 30 yards downfield....but the ability to throw passes 8-12 yards is basic and it was CLEARLY ON THE TAPE from BYU that Zach didn't excel at that stuff. Others said it, too....they said watch the 2019 tape, not the 2020 tape. Did our scouting people, RS, and JD watch that and FOCUS on it....or were they dazzled by the broken plays, combine stuff, and Pro Day throws instead ? Instead, we got the "Mahomes-like" bull**** about his ability to make the 2-4 throws a game when he's on the run and the play breaks down....but not about the 20-25 throws that are basic, simple, and for which you need to complete 65-75% of them.
He's throwing the ball an unhealthy amount when any QB not named Zach Wilson is on the field. You don't win in the NFL throwing the ball as much as the Jets do when ZW is not available unless you have a top 5 QB triggering the passing attack. Even then the norm is to have as many rushing attempts as completions or close to it. Justin Herbert is the only QB in the NFL right now who is just throwing the ball and ignoring the rushing game at times. In the games Mike White has started the Jets have thrown the ball 134 times and rushed 78. Last year the numbers were 153 pass attempts and 71 rushes. It's like LaFleur goes completely pass happy when he gets anybody who can actually throw the ball on the field. Not surprisingly the Jets are 2-4 in those 6 starts. This is NFL 101: even if you think you have Joe Namath back there you establish the run to win the game and then pass to score and put it away.
Joe Douglas got the Brothers Idiot to butt out. I expect that to continue. I'm not that worried. As to Coach Saleh, what we need is more of this:
Geno had some great games mixed in with the terrible ones. Zach has not shown that sort of untapped potential.
Daniel Kelly is a fraud who spits out ridiculous takes and got lucky on this one. Google Daniel Kelly Tebow and you'll see what I'm talking about.
You can call him a fraud, claim he has ridiculous takes, say he got lucky, but the bottom line is that Daniel Kelly made the correct call on Zach Wilson and Joe Douglas, et al did not.
Yeah I mean is he a hack? He’s one of the most well known NFL reporters whether people like him or not. This is a Jets fan trend though. Cimini has been public enemy number one for saying the Jets suck for the past decade. Even though the Jets have sucked for the past decade and most of his reporting has been true.
If Ernest Hemingway wrote "The Jaguars defeated the Jets by a score of 19-3" there are people here who would call him a douchebag hack.
good points, my only issue with Cimini is that he is always late with his stories. It’s like he doesn’t have the balls to break the story in the moment. We will hear about this year’s roller coaster QB ride and how Saleh/Douglas/Woody felt about it from an exclusive Cimini story in like 5 years
Cimini has been a decent reporter with his role diminishing over the years as media evolves into the twitter meta.
