We need to stop being desperate at the QB position. It started with the FOs Zach obsession and it has carried over. We took Zach in a year when everyone was QB crazy. Rational people recognized there were only two promising selections, TL and Fields, and we rolled with a maverick, utterly stupid pick, based on a pro day. This started our desperation. Here is my point. Zach was pretty bad last season, which signaled that we should bring in another young QB in the draft. And this was the perfect year. There were several QBs this year as promising as say, Mac Jones, and they were going for peanuts. I can think of at least 4 QBs that should have gone no lower than the second, who slipped. That was a huge lack of foresight. Our problems could have easily been solved already for a cheap pick. This is what we need to do going forward. Pick a QB in the 2nd or 3rd rounds until we find the guy. Besides, its the only method to solve this problem that we will be able to afford without losing to much talent to the cap. Don't use this moment to keep being desperate.
We do have holes as you noted, but I'd be surprised if JD doesn't fix them, especially the OL. It's blindingly obvious that they can't depend on the OL they have much beyond AVT. Between FA and the draft this has to be the focus. And finding a legit Edge somehow. But I'd argue that getting a Brady, Carr or Rodgers would offset LaFleur's inexperience and he could rely on their deep experience more than his own "genius" - younger, less established QBs would still have to take their directions from him.
Maybe Kyle Shanahan would trade Zach for Trey straight up. I'm not even talking about value for value I just want Zach off this team.
If the Jets put the first round tender on MW, would anyone touch him? Can they put that tender on any player?
Also, except injury history, what disqualifies White from getting an opportunity at the starting job next summer? I support that completely
The truth is if we go back to White and he plays well, how much are we going to be willing to spend on him?
Sign Minshew, maybe take someone in the middle rounds. I say maybe because there are other positions to address which might line up with the talent coming in the draft. LB, OT, and S come to mind.
That's something JD has been unable to do though in spite of multiple investments. First year with Sam he promised he would protect him, but really didn't. Then for Zach OLine struggled early with GVR. Then did better for a stretch, and got bad at the end with CMG and Fant injured. This year also terrible, even getting White hurt. Even stud AVT now has some durability questions, being out for the year in just his second year. Both tackles are crap. Expensive G signing Laken is crap. Becton - injury prone and out shape. Mitchell also health concerns and wasn't that great when he payed. CMG has been OK overall, but a FA. I am not confident we will have a great OLine next year. Particularly with a lot of resources now needing to go to QB position.
The market will determine that. I would try to bring him back, especially if he comes back and plays well. Maybe he hasn’t reached his peak
Speaking of extensive injur history, even before being drafted by the Jets, Zach had surgery on both his right hand and right shoulder? Could this be one of the reasons why Zach looks like damaged goods at such a young age? Why were these previous injuries completely whitewashed when the Jets were evaluating him for the draft? This sort of blatant oversight is very unlike JD, especially for such a high pick. If the Jets go into the offseason with only Zach under contract, this will diminish their bargaining power, as they will be negotiating from a position of weakness and reeking of desperation. At the very least, one would think they would need to tie down Mikewhite to not only enhance their bargaining power, but to also have someone on the roster who is very familiar with and can excel within the system. Of course, this is contingent on MW wanting to return and not pulling a deGrom on the Jets.
The Jets paid Josh McCown $10m to backup Sam. We can afford to pay a QB, but not overpay if we're carrying Zach's contract into 2023. Hopefully we get to see White and Minshew finish out their respective seasons, and view a clearer path going forward. Everyone else is priced out of the market, will require giving up draft capital, or both.
A lot of people talking about signing Minshew as an option in 2023. What is his contract situation in Philly?
May be I got this all wrong, but I do not see a scenario where they bring in Minshew and keep White for a competition giving both the starting type money they would be seeking. Plus picking up Wilson dead salary.
This year the Jets have just over 14 mil in Cap allotted to QB's ZW $8m JF $3.5m MW $2.5M CS $0.3m Next year ZW counts $9.5m against the cap and the Jets are ranked 23rd out of 32 in QB position spending. They have plenty of room to pay Mike White or anyone else they need to bring in, particularly if they offload Zach and some of his salary. The Jets need to overhaul the OL big time. They spent more for OL than any team this year $47mil.. Need to get younger and better.
I hope this is just your wild-ass guessing rather than a list from somebody who makes their living by putting odds down.
