Nope, but if he can get us to a Super Bowl, I don't really care. I think he's such a douche, but I've never seen a championship in my lifetime. I don't really care.
the rookie year stats don’t bother me if we saw some improvement this season… He’s still young so bring him back next year to compete with White and a rookie (3rd rounder+)… gotta keep drafting Qb’s when you don’t know if you have one… then if it doesn’t work out with either White/Wilson/rookie… You can trade/cut Wilson, draft a Qb in the 1st in 2 years and still have White as your starter until your Qb is ready… to which point White becomes your needed vet backup.
To make the cap balance this year we already restructured Mosley's contract through 2026, making him really hard to cut. He was going to cost 17 million this season, but now is only counting 5.5 million against this years cap, with his guaranteed money being extended through 2026. This means if we cut him next year we will only save 6 million, and take a nearly 15 million dead cap hit. But if we don't cut him next year we'll be paying him an extra 18+ million beyond his guaranteed money over the next two seasons. Basically Mosley took considerably less money this season to make him hard to cut going forward.
For us to PAY Mike White would be a very public acknowledgement that Zach has been a failure. That’s why I think they go the easier route and pay a journeyman for a year or two and hold a sham completion that Zach “wins”, and when Zach finally falls flat on his face the said journeyman starts until we draft a new guy.
I think JD has been around NFL front offices long enough to know that's not necessarily how it works. He is not guaranteed another 1st round QB. If ZW falters I think he has enough stock in Woodys eye to get another stab at a QB. But if MW signs, and stars elsewhere AND Zach falls on his face and said contingency vet back up doesn't catch lightning in a bottle a la Fitz '15 .. JD is toast man, he's not gonna get to pick another QB if you stack all those outcomes against him.
honestly I used to worry more about the cap than I do now…teams always find a way to keep guys they really want to keep…
The point is were not saving much money cutting Mosley, and can we find a replacement as good for 6 million? But if we keep him he's going to be really expensive. In fact all 3 of our LBs are going to cost considerably more next year. This years cap is going to regress our team. There is no way to magically make it work. We've already begun borrowing against our future.
Unpopular opinion: the QB position is not the main issue. It's the OL. When the Jets were winning the OL was blowing huge holes open for the running backs, enabling the Jets to control the clock and wear down the opposing defense. When they stopped being able to blow holes open the Jets started losing, no matter who was playing QB.
If they really want to cut Mosely to free up space they just have to designate him as a post June 1st cut
Go into next year as Mike White 's job to lose. He deserves to be QB 1. Zach is to much boom or bust. He makes the big play but can't sustain drives with the simple throws & that is what White is good at. I'm not totally giving up on Zach, he just needs a year or two behind Mike to learn the game & how it should be played & when to put the cannon arm aside and put some touch on the ball, another thing Mike White is good at.
Skipping ahead to page 6. Can't really go by what we see on the field today. Bad Oline play. Bad running game play. Bad pass protection. So how much better with this get in 2023 if we don't do a thing? Answer is MUCH better. Getting our Oline that we already have back and healthy, including VeraTucker, Max and Becton will go a long way towards stabilizing the Oline. Getting Bryce Hall back will go a LONG way to upping our running game into the top 10 (at least). Until our Oline and Running Game gets back on track, it won't matter one iota who's under center. Zack is probably our best Houdini when it comes to avoiding a sack/pressure, and even that isn't close to enough. Both Zack and Mike White will/would look much better next year with our really good Oline and Bryce Hall back up and running. In fact, if we had never lost our Oline and Bryce Hall, we'd have forgotten that Mike White is even on the roster. But now that we DO know how good MW can be, along with our healed up Oline and Running Game, I think we'll be back to being just fine at QB. Having MW and ZW battle it out in a 100% clean fight during TC should be good enough. We can go back to looking to add a few more pieces here and there. And here's what we add: 1) Sideline to Sideline Middle Line Backer. 2) Best Cover Safety available in round 2. 3) Pass Rusher 4) D-tackle 5-6-7) The best Oline we can get, including Center.
Mike White will get at least a 3 yr 35 million deal. His numbers back it up . His only problem is staying healthy
I don't like the idea of giving the job to Mike White unconditionally. The Jets have been handing the job to these guys forever without making them compete.. If he isn't competing with Zach then they need to draft a mid round QB and sign a journeyman.
If White is on this team next year he will be earning at least 12m a year. We paid that to Ryan Fitzpatrick, which was the absolute bottom of starting QB salaries years ago. If you pay that kind of money to White you are declaring Zach’s chances as over. If they do pay White then the smart move is to trade Zach for whatever they can recoup and sign a guy like Minshew to backup White. The other option is to let White walk, sign Minshew and give Zach one last chance. It’s the worst option in my opinion but I think it’s what the Jets will do because many a GM have stubbornly tanked their careers on the backs of a failed QB. IMO Douglas has done well enough in the draft to survive moving on from Zach. But not if they have another trash season next year. IMO now is the time to cut bait. I say sign White, sign a vet to back him up, and draft a QB with potential like Zach had in a round that more accurately fits his profile (4th round or later imo) and let him sit and learn the way Zach should have.
We should see a lot of quarterbacks in the draft this year and next year specifically that have played a lot of football. They all got an extra year of eligibility because of Covid so there’s a lot of 5/6 year college football players coming out.
