Just listened to saleh on the Michael Kay show — he said the way the rule is explained to teams and coaches is that you get one step after the ball is released to hit the qb and you cannot hit them above the neck. JFM only took one step.
Did you watch MLB this year? They were so bad that robots will call balls n strikes next year. Umpires will have an earpiece and be told what to call.
I watch tons of baseball, probably over a hundred games each year and playoffs. Behind the plate has been pretty rough, everything else is fine and they use replay well to fix mistakes. It's nowhere near the sad state of the NFL. There will very very rarely be one call in baseball that is the reason the game ends the way it did. Football? All the time
And he's right. That was a ticky-tack call... if they hadn't thrown the flag it would have gone unnoticed.
This is pretty much the only reason they don’t want to make calls reviewable and made a mockery of it when they allowed for pass interference to be reviewed. They’re terrified of refs having secondary control over the call. Roughing the passer should be though. They can do it just like targeting in college football.
These RTP calls on the Jets seem to have been happening for a good few years now. Back to Williams at least. I seem to recall someone mentioning that the refs had been told to scrutinize teams with a high number of RTP calls on them the previous year more closely, but I may be imagining that. However one thing is certain. Jets QB gets crunched and thrown to the ground after the ball comes out, no flag. Opposing QB gets tapped after ball comes out, flag thrown.
Yeah... I saw that while re-watching the game. I hope the refs get it out of their system before our playoff run...
