How has he learned from mistakes, he CONTINUES to make, and each worse than the last. Hes not learning. If he does the same vs Bills, then what????
Two Best Things I heard this AM 1. Tiki Barber on Tiki and Tierney said when watching his film, patriots clearly showed overload and Zach had no idea how to slide or didn’t slide protection. Felt like he wants to go up and play hero ball. Said that’s a rookie mistake and just fundamental. *If that’s the case that’s awful. Jamarcus Russell like. If Zach is ever going to become the QB they thought they drafted, yesterday was a necessary step in that process, as difficult as it was to watch. There were lots of mistakes made by others - JFM's RTQ (although I think that was a BS call), questionable play calling, poor OL play - but it was clear that it was Zach who cost them the game, and by his tone and demeanor in speaking with the media afterwards, it was clear he knows this. The question now is: Can he apply what he learned yesterday? I believe he can. He's shown this ability his whole career. That said, the NFL is a brutal and unforgiving classroom. It's results-driven, with no credits for "almost" or "tried". Zach needs to deliver, NOW. And whatever problems and mistakes by others he had to overcome, there were plenty of opportunities there for him to win this game rather than lose it. Why he didn't take them is a question he needs to answer and resolve immediately. If he can't, it may be necessary to sit him for a while and see if that helps. It's not unusual to sit QBs who eventually became good/great early in their careers. I still believe Zach has the tools and ability to be good/great, but what's holding him back is the mental part of the game. Sometimes you need to give your head a break before you can absorb the new lessons you need to learn. All of this is on Saleh and MLF to solve one way or the other.

Everyone needs to calm down a little bit. Wilson had a very bad game, it happens and it even happens to franchise QBs. Wilson is not the first young QB that Bellicheck made look terrible and he won't be the last. Wilson seems to have some mechanical problems on the short throws where he throws off his back foot and he keeps passing on short open routes because, I assume, he wants to see if the deep route opens up (it could also be that he just doesn't see them, but they're too obvious so I don't think that's it). He does this frequently and often and its kind of maddening because then he holds the ball too long and starts running for his life and, sometimes he makes a great play, but more often than not its a sack or a throwaway (and in this game, an interception). One of the interceptions was an overthrow on a short pattern (that he should have thrown earlier anyway). One looks like it might have been a throwaway that he just didn't throw out of bounds and the third was either an overthrow while he was running to the sideline or a miscommunications where he thought the receiver was going to turn upfield. They really need to bang into his head that in the NFL he takes the first open route in his progression and he doesn't overthink it and he doesn't hold on to the ball in that situation. I know there are a lot of people screaming he's not a franchise QB and we should put someone else in, but that's crazy. Yes, you can be a very good team with a good defense, special teams and a running game, but with very few exceptions, you won't win a superbowl without a franchise QB in this day and age. Nobody else on the roster is a franchise QB, so Zack's our best shot right now. We need to develop him and hope he turns into that franchise QB. There will be days like this and we just have to accept that.
Dan Jeremiah said it well. Buffalo is such a big game for this kid…they have a good D but not elite without white and hyde out Zach Wilson is spending 80% of his time trying to create and 20% of his time being a distributor. That needs to flip for him to find some consistency and success.
It's so maddening because he does have those good throws, but misses easy ones. He seems not to be able to put a complete game together. He threw check downs at guys feet again, and like you said panics in the pocket. If he would just step up instead of going backwards, he would either see open receivers or see the running lanes he has...goddamn it is frustrating.
We've given Zach far more help than the other QBs in his draft class. If he was on the Jags, Bears, Texans, or Pats, he'd already be benched. Except BB didn't make Zach look bad. Zach made Zach look bad this time.
They're prob going to be missing Poyer as well. He left last night with an elbow injury. He hurt the same one in preseason IIRC
It usually takes more than 18 games. The plan has not changed lets see how he does the rest of the season. The kid was 4-0 coming into this game. This is a valuable learning experience for the kid lets hope learns from it. You do not throw balls up for grabs in the NFL even on third down. Like you posted he made some really good throws that are overshadowed by two stupid throws. His line did not help him any but that is not an excuse for those throws. He needs to stop the Fran Tarkington scrambling and learn to live another down.
I have this vision of the movie A Clockwork Orange. We need to compile a film for Zach to show his good and his bad and make him watch it repeatedly until he's brainwashed. Set your feet. Rolling out ok. Going backwards not okay. throwing out of bounds isn't as difficult as you make it look. Throw to the guys who have the same color jersey as you. problem solved!
That play was maddening. There were at least 3 other plays where I was screaming after 2-3 seconds RUN! Just run!
It's not just one game though. Our point is that Zach has been playing like this for 90% of the season, it just got overlooked because we were winning games. We've been saying the same things about Zach since his first game this year: He flees the pocket too quickly which causes him to take his eyes off the field as he scrambles backwards/sideways. He doesn't set his feet before he throws, which causes all of the overthrows. He can't give up on plays, which leads to the bad interceptions throwing into double/triple coverage. These are the same arguments that were being made weeks ago, they didn't just manifest for the first time vs. the Pats.
Thank you for posting. Watching this live I thought he had a huge opportunity to run. Looking at it now he may still be running.
That's what Belichick does, it's what he always does. He takes away the run and makes young QBs beat him with their arm, which most young QBs can't do. We were averaging 3.4 YPC yesterday running the ball, that's awful. Our running game was mainly working before because we had Breece Hall breaking long runs consistently.
