I"m not nearly as cynical as you, Cman. I don't think LaFleur hates Mims. I think Mims showed them in TC this year what he could do. By all accounts, he came to OTAs in great shape and busted his ass working very hard, showing that he had learned from last year and put it behind him. He was behind the 8 ball last year getting food poisoning, missing OTAs and I think a chunk of TC, then had to regain weight and strength, and had missed a lot of the installation of the offense and precious reps, then got down and frustrated when he had to learn all 3 WR positions and got no playing time early. Then he wasn't ready when he had the opportunity to play and didn't capitalize on the opportunities he had. I may be mistaken, but don't think he had ever had adversity like that ever before. I hope that MLF and Saleh are smart enough to realize that he was just a kid dealing with the first real adversity he had ever faced on a football field. I think he truly impressed them this spring. If he hadn't, I don't think he'd be here now. I don't think they've given up on him yet. If Davis were to get injured again, I think that Mims would be his replacement. He is the best fit in that role.
If it were me, I'd deactivate Smith. He has never impressed me, and has a hard time getting open. I think the only reason he stays on the active roster is that he plays STs. Mims volunteered to play STs in OTAs or TC, but had never played them before. I'm not sure that Smith is that good on STs that he couldn't be replaced. I hope that Davis doesn't get injured during a game. If so, they'll have no one to take on his role for the rest of that game.
I agree that Mims is Davis's backup just in case something happens however, Mims sees himself more as a starter and the CS doesn't seem to agree. I would imagine the only reason why Mims is still on the roster is because JD hasn't found the right deal for him yet. That could change over these next few weeks. I am surprised the CS isn't showcasing Mims to WR needy teams like ummmm... The Packers for an example.
I agree that Mims sees himself as a starter, and I don't blame him. I agree with him. He is a starting-caliber player. I don't think that it's a matter of the CS not agreeing that he has that kind of ability, it's just that Davis is better, and Moore and Wilson offer more flexibility. I don't think the Jets are looking to trade Mims at all. If they were, then I think they would be showcasing him. The fact that they aren't says to me that they're more interested in winning games than they are acquiring draft picks, and they know that Mims is valuable depth if Davis gets hurt this year or if Davis doesn't re-sign with the Jets following this season. I think there's a good chance that Mims is still in their plans. It's much easier to find a player like Smith who can take his place on STs than it is a tall, fast, WR who is an excellent blocker and who has good hands. I think there's a good chance that Smith isn't on the team next year, but Mims still will be.
Given that choice, the obvious guy would be Jeff Smith. Me, I'd give Mims an opportunity against Denver, & sit Smith. The Broncs have a good secondary, & the WRs had an off game gaining any separation vs GB. Let's see what Mims can do... especially before the trade deadline. To me, Smith is pedestrian. Mims has a ton more upside, & did do STs during TC.
I seriously doubt this. I would truly be shocked if that were to happen, but if it does, then that would clearly say that the Jets are much higher on Mims than most Jets fans think.
I tend to doubt it too, but something is going on with Moore. He didn't practice today, & the story has changed a coupla times. Cimini's take...
It seems they have... seems emphasized. Those tweets Moore posted, were kinda bizarre. He seemed to be excited about this season in TC, & early in the season. The letdown of not being a factor, seems to have thrown him into some mental distress (ie: depression?). Hopefully, this'll be resolved quickly. In reality, he's just a kid.
I don’t know how much you’ve watched the Pats this year but Wynn has been abysmal. Becton on his gimpy knee would be a better option. Hardest of passes!
I put this in the Moore requests a trade thread but probably should have put it here…. Imagine if our strongest positional group got stronger…. IMO Moore is important to the future of the Jets and I have 0 interest in trading him… but Derrick Brown would be an offer I couldn’t refuse. Jets get 3rd yr DT Derrick Brown (think bigger than Q and having a top 5 season this year) Green Bay Packers get a WR who already knows the system still on his rookie contract. Panthers get ammo to rebuild: GB 2022 1st, 2022 Jets 3rd, 2024 Jets 4th GB would be spending their 2023 1st on a WR and hopefully salvage this season. Other MiLF knows he’s 1st round talent I don’t see JD moving on him unless he gets… an offer he can’t refuse.
His ST contributions are nothing spectacular, he is only playing about 33% of ST snaps and has one tackle. Haven't really noticed him on any returns so I guessing his blocking is not really above average either.
I think some team angling for the playoffs can offer 1st round pick for Eli...if we trade him, I don't know if JD will allow it
We would not get anything close to a first-round pick for Moore. Given his production he would net us something around a 5th or 6th.
