Gets 3 starts (Miami, Pittsburgh, GB) due to injuries and playing next to AVT (which I’m sure has helped) has had 3 strong/clean games in a row, playing 100% of the snaps and I believe he had not allowed any pressures. He plays nasty and the Jets run game also has come alive too. How many times in the past have we had seasons where we see a starter or two go down, our running game becomes non-existent and every time our Qb drops back, he gets killed and eventually hurt. Many felt it was potentially a mistake when the Eagles let this guy go. Glad they were stacked on oline + Joe Douglas deserves props. This week will be a big test with Denver. Brown and Tomlison have been good. AVT has been great. McGovern solid. If a Herbig can keep playing at this level, the Jets are going to be a dangerous team…
Jets are turning into a band of brothers situation right before our eyes. Now all we gotta do is march on Agincourt
He had a 77.5 PFF rating at RG when he was with the Eagles… 7th highest rating in the NFL since 2020. Just 24 years old. This is the type of backup the Jets never ever seem to find. The best part is no one is talking about him because he’s just doing his job and not giving up sacks/big plays. Usually our backups are so bad, it’s painfully obvious. Like you say… a band of brothers. Lets go!
The way things are developing, I may change my mind about needing a lineman in the first round again in next year's draft. With the line as it is, plus the guys about to come back from injury (Fant and Mitchell), we are looking set. Maybe a back-up center? I don't see the need for a tackle or guard IF this situation continues.
I'll say who saw this coming, but sounds like he had played at a pretty high level in his limited time before so perhaps JD did! The OL has played well and there's reason for optimism going forward, but damn it's messy. So many questions. Where does AVT end up as the year goes on and or longer term? What to do with Fant and Max Mitchell when they return? Can you really relegate Herbig to the bench the way he's been playing? And many more.
Actually.... Our resident international man of mystery Nate Herbig IS a trained and accomplished center isn't he? I would assume he could handle it and he's already on hand helping to pull the wagon. Just when we thought it couldn't get any better.
I wouldn't exactly call him "trained and accomplished" at center. He's played a total of 49 regular season snaps there and a bunch more during last years preseason games. The reports I've read say he's a decent guard (both sides) when sandwiched between experienced players, but not a very good center, unfortunately.
Its looking like his “backup” status may be a thing of the past. If he locks down the starting RG slot that really changes strategy going forward as far as any OL additions …this would mean ATV stays at one of the OT slots.
They'll need a new center going forward unless JD decides to resign McGovern. As far as OT goes it’s going to be interesting how it plays out. Fant is a FA does JD resign him at 31? Brown probably retires or is let go. AVT at this point would have to slot in at one OT spot. Mitchell at the other or as a swing tackle? Where would Becton fit in is he healthy for training camp and back in a competition? He’s still on his rookie deal …. But as of today keep things as they are never disrupt a good thing.
McGovern can play guard as well right? I’d love to draft a rd 1 center and resign/kick McGovern to the bench in the perfect world. Also, anybody know anything about this guy they signed yesterday after they cut McDermott?
That's right. No one talks about Herbig. That's good when you are an OG. Unlike the way we all constantly talked about Greg Van Rotten. It was so painfully obvious that he was WAY in over his head. Painful to us JET fans, that is.
Contrary to previous reports, JD knows how to get OL support under some pretty adverse circumstances. Next year draft will be the crown jewel for this team roster.
Herbig is great, but the biggest hero is AVT. He's everything Becton was supposed to be, and his ability to play tackle is what's letting us get Herbig in at guard.
With games coming up against strong D (Denver, 2x Buffalo and somewhat Minny.. maybe NE 2x who know's they are a bit hard to predict) it's more like Bastogne... just survive the shelling from the Bills and hope for the best
I started noticing Herbig after the whistle against the Packers, he's good at getting the D players to blow up at him. He drew a flag from one of the Packers players when the Jets were near the goal line, the guy ripped his helmet off. He had been working on that same guy like 3 plays before, getting him worked up.
I don't think they resign Fant (unless he's willing to sign a very team friendly deal). I suspect that they'll draft a tackle in the 3rd or so round and then groom him for a year. Becton is likely their starting LT next year (if healthy), but I doubt they'll exercise his 5th year option (out for 2 of first 3 years, injured for part of 1st year and a continuing weight problem), so he might be gone after next year. Mitchell probably goes back to RT and AVT goes back to RG. Saleh has said that they view his best position as guard and they think he could be the best guard in the NFL. Also, at guard, he makes both a center and a tackle better. Unless they use or intend to use a high draft pick on a center, I think they resign McGovern. I think they try to keep Brown as a backup OT - so their backup OTs would be Brown and a new draftee. I think they also draft a guard in a later round next year also.
Undrafted Mike Remmers has been a starter in the league for about 7 years playing G and T on 2 SB teams. He seems like the kind of guy whose a great backup/good starter. It’s going to be between him and Herbig for the starting job on the right.
Then where would Herbig fit in? If he continues his solid play I don’t see him going back to the bench …
Yeah if we start beating the likes of NE and Buffalo I'm going to be over the rainbow lol! Honestly after these last few weeks though I'm not sure its impossible we pick one off here and there against the really good teams. I'm probably getting swept up with the recent wins but I really think some of these new Jets players are legit.
