Losing would have been bad enough, but to lose this way is beyond awful. An incredibly disastrous 10 days kills an entire season.
The Dodgers series was clearly this team’s Championship, because the season pretty much ended after that. Getting swept by the Braves only mattered because of the context, but it wouldn’t have mattered if getting swept by the Cubs and losing 2/3 to the Nats hadn’t preceded it.
As a Yanks fan, I felt this was a likeable Mets team that missed their chance but Steve Cohen will go all out to make them better.
Technically, sure, but the Braves series mattered more than just by the numbers. It was the only truly high-pressure series the team faced all year, and they spit the bit in a massive way, just like they did Friday and tonight. No one will ever convince me that Bassitt's horrible performance today had nothing to do with his horrible performance last week. And the Mets better hope that Scherzer was only fatigued in his last two starts, because he has looked very old when it mattered most, and they still owe him many millions. I never thought that this team was good enough to beat the Dodgers in a long series, but given how many players might be out the door, who knows what next year's team will look like.
Sadly I knew this season was over after they shit the bed vs the Braves, but let myself get hopeful again.... gut reactions are usually the correct ones....
I don’t think deGrom will be back. If I’m being honest I don’t think he wants to come back. I get the vibe he wants a change of scenery.
Braves signed Spencer Strider for 6-year, $75M. It’s crazy how they’ve locked all these guys up for length and with team friendly contracts. Also seems like they call these guys up and they all end up being studs. They will be a problem for years to come. We gotta get younger.
They're gonna keep signing vets until the prospects that everyoneeeeeeeeeee (I say this sarcastically) loves are ready. I guess that's the benefit of having a rich owner. You don't actually need to rely on the young guys right away and it will let you replenish the farm system while still being competitive by signing aging vets on 2 or 3 year deals (Escobar, Marte + Canha come to mind). Hopefully Alvarez, Baty, Vientos, and Mauricio amount to something. The three that played haven't shown much.
Strawberry crushed me too. And unfortunately I'm old enough for Seaver. Man, I love deGrom too but if he leaves it won't crush me because I know the Mets will not have a budget to replace him. As great as he is its been in flashes due to injury bugs. If he stays, I can't be confident he's healthy next September/ October or any September/ October. He's difficult to read. At first news of the opt out decision, I thought he's doing it just to get to Scherzer's per year salary. Understandable. Then I feared maybe it was ego - he didn't want to play second fiddle to Max. But watching the season it seem like they are inseparable in the dugout and are a true tandem. That makes me think it's just about getting a raise. But Jake seems mysterious. Maybe his wife and kids want to be somewhere else. We have no idea who else has his ear. In summary, if he wants to be somewhere else, god bless him and thank you. The Mets have never been a more attractive team to play for than the era they've entered. All I ask is that the situation evolves quickly so other decisions can be formulated.
