Mike White got his jersey in the HOF based on one regular season game in the Jets current offense, and he's got an arm made of limp macaroni.
This isn't about Zach.. Maybe this year he'll play most of the season and we won't need SloJo or BengalGame to step in..
For the Streveler lovers, I'll give you a comparison to understand the situation. In summer camp, in sports, I was a less than average athlete and ALWAYS played on the "B" team. Over 6 summers, I was NEVER put on an "A" team b/c I wasn't a good enough athlete. My last summer was my best summer athletically, and I was still on all the B teams, but I was the superstar of the B teams. If I had played on the A team, I would have been the worst player on the field. If you were a fan of my camp sports and only watched the B teams in my superstar B-team summer, you would have thought that I was a top athlete. That explains Streveler. He's not even a B team player. He's probably C team or worse.
Ummm... Did SloJo win a single game this preseason? SloJo looked great against the 1's in the preseason? How about BengalGame.. Did he light up the 1st teamers? the 2nd teamers?.. Streveler won but because he wasn't playing against the ones, he sucks. Okay.. Now we'll get to see just how much better off we are at QB.. I think given this teams' history with developing QBs, Streveler just may have dodged a bullet. Pray Zach stays healthy. God help the Jets if he doesn't...
He was a back-up for Cardinals. Didn't play much, but did play some, and had 79 passer rating on a small sample size. At lease he made the roster. Even threw an NFL TD (along with a pick). In this preseason he played against some of the same B teams that White did, and did better. I don't think anyone says he is a great QB. But by all accounts he outplayed White, who had 75 rating last year in NFL, and that 75 includes Bengals game, hence some us felt he should have been kept over him. That's all there is to it really. He seemed to have improved from the time when he was a sub for Cardinals. Could have perhaps worked himself into a longer term back-up to Zach role as Flacco is not getting any younger, and White had a subpair offseason, while Streveler had a stellar one. I don't think people are suggesting for him to play over Zach now, just that it's a bit unfair that amongst two third string scrubs, one greatly outperformed the other, but we picked the inferior one to stick around.
I trust the Jet coaches on this. They don't see that Streveler is a better fit for the team than Mike White.
I think the argument here is as much about how White is dog shit as Streveler is serviceable. I don't think Streveler is a world beater by any stretch of the imagination, but from what I've seen out of White I'd rather cut him and save $2.5 million in cap space and use Streveler as a back up (that hopefully we will never see take the field).
I think it is a matter of being more familiar with Mike, him knowing the system better after a year in it, and taking a safer guy, who has some financial commitment to him already. We all saw preseason and who was a better fit. Jets didn't have enough balls to pick a clearly better player for the above reasons. Maybe the Jets are also thinking they can have them both and Streveler won't be claimed off waivers. We'll find out pretty soon if he is.
His contract I think is fully guaranteed. It must be. There is no way JD keeps White over Streveler if he can save 2.5 mil in CAP in the process AND get a player who far and away outplayed Mike this offseason. The opposite is likely the case: BECAUSE we paid him 2.5 mil already makes him harder to cut.
White played the Bengals (#17), New England (#2), Bills (#1), and Colts (#10). Literally the best defenses in the league and the SB contender. You do understand MW got thrown the wolves and played pretty reasonably for a backup given the talent around him and the strength of opponents. MW Passer Rating (2021) NE (Zach injury game) - 64.8 CIN - 107.9 IND (11 passes/injured) - 121.4 BUF - 33.4 Ok, but somehow MW is a complete bum. And Buffalo makes everyone look bad. Their the best defense in the league for a reason.
Preach. It just comes with the territory though. The "what have you done for me lately?" mantra. It's hard to argue against It, considering how bad this team has been... Especially the last decade plus. Yikes. ..but I agree with you. 100% You are a reasonable poster, check. lol
I don't have a lot of confidence in the Jets coaches but I'm with you on this. At least Streveler was entertaining for a few weeks but I'll wonder what would have happened if he started the Giants game.
