After 3 full off-seasons, it finally looks like the foundation of the team is in place. Almost every key player is under contract for 2-3 more seasons. Christ, I didn't realise Edoga and Van Roten were still in the squad both need to be replaced but more so Van Roten as he is utter gash.
A very good look at the current team. Thanks for posting. Myers could go to idl and kicker will be a camp battle. Now where are the true weak spots? Well, we have some ol backups that should be replaced. The marginal improvement may not be much but if they see the field it could help somewhat. Another top flight lb would help a lot. As would a dl. But both those groups have some young talent that could develop. I really don't see lots of weak spots in the starters..some but not a lot. So if ZW develops to at least average and no catastrophic injuries we should compete in every game. I stick by my 10 win game possible season.
The roster is definitely improved and I love how young they are. These guys can all grow together. What I really like is that if Wilson doesn't pan out, the Jets should be in a position in a few years to plug someone else in and still compete for a title. Douglas has really laid the foundation and it all shouldn't ride on the QB's shoulders. The future is bright
I hope so. I'm terrified of what happens to this team if one of their OLineman go down. We have no depth. I get slightly nauseous when I think of ever seeing GVR at MetLife stadium (other than selling peanuts in the stands, where he belongs).
I absolutely agree that we will most likely add a OL after June 1st. But one thing is for sure, this is now JD's team. 20 out of 22 starters are his guys - Q and CJ being the exception. And most of the depth he brought in as well. No excuses going forward. Edit. Actually looking at that roster, it looks like 51 of 53 are his guys. Or am I missing something? Maybe Jeff Smith if he sticks?
Well done as always Max! I think this is pretty spot on for how I see the 53 man panning out currently! I think they go back to the FA pool and look for another piece at IDL and/or S though so that could change things up a bit. Also, I see a lot of people upset about GVR being on the roster. The guy is a pretty terrible starter but in terms of being a backup OG, I think he’s a decent option. I don’t have faith in him to start 17 games but if he’s only asked to play a few snaps here and there, I think he’ll be fine.
Justin Hardee won’t be cut. He’s a core special teamer and none of the other CBs play special teams. I think Guidry could be cut but I suspect we move on from Hall via trade. That LB room is still putrid. Other than that I really like what I see when it’s laid out like this. Minus GVR.
You think Conor McDermott is a goner? And ya--Justin Hardee is a keeper And I suspect Nick Bawden makes the 53.
You'd win a foresight award if Hall gets traded. I'll say Rankins gets cut. I was looking for McGovern to be reduced/cut but I guess we're going to pay him $10MM and find a new center next year the way the preseason is going now.
Nice effort Max. Some tough cuts there. I see you have Curry getting cut as well as Bawden and Hardee. I doubt Hardee gets cut. I think we carry 7 CBs again. But where do we make room? 9 DL would be a painful cut. Maybe one of the DTs as JFM will be moving to DT on passing downs. Unless Marshall develops he likely is back to the PS. Thomas could be cut too. Maybe dropping OL to 8 and saying goodbye to GVR. Keeping McDermott over Edoga might provide more flexibility. Ty Johnson could be cut to make room for Bawden if the Jets like one of their PS type RBs like Bam Zonavan. Cutting Mimms or putting J. Smith on the PS would open a spot too. My guess is some of these painful decisions will be avoided due to training camp injuries. But, I am not sure JD is completely done adding players. He might add a DT and OG when players are cut. But, wow look at the transformation of the roster since 2019.
I definitely don’t want to trade Hall but I can see it happening. He’s going to get buried on the depth chart unless something goes horribly wrong with Gardner or Reed. Hall or Echols are going to be playing minimal snaps and at that point would you rather capitalize and get something in return rather than completely kill either of their values?
I think our biggest needs are: - backup OT (we need another Moses type and probably should have kept him) because I don’t think Becton plays 17 games - run stuffing DT (again…would have liked to have kept Foley…just like we should’ve kept Snacks a while back - LB could use help, though if we play nickel a lot I’m assuming it’s Mosley and Quincy….still need help there though Interesting that they don’t see mit the same way though….honestly I probably would’ve gone OT instead of CB at 4, but not gonna complain about getting an elite CB, but then having done that and signing two TEs in free agency, taking a TEin the third who hasn’t been a receiver was a bit headscratching for me….first, we already have that in Wesco if that’s what we want, and second, I think the OT and LB needs were greater than the need for a third TE. Still love the draft, and this roster looks SO much better than even last year….
Completely agree that we need a run stuffer, completely disagree that we should have kept Foley at $10 million per year and I completely disagree that we should have kept snacks back in the day. If anything history proved that paying a run stuffer big dollars is not a good move.
I get the thought process but I seriously doubt they trade Hall. I think he’s a pretty good corner and still on a rookie deal. I get the thinking in maybe he can fetch something in return, but no way I’d trade him. Let Sauce, Reed and Hall battle it out for 1, 2, and 3….
yeah I get the money part but our run D was abysmal last year and so far I’m not sure it’s improved much….all those corners won’t matter if the offense consistently gets 5-8 yards a pop. I still have horrible memories of that drive back in Oakland where the Raiders ran it every single play for a TD on us….I was there….we need help. I get the contract stuff but all this cap he’ll stuff is a bit overblown…somehow teams always manage to make it work….
I do think that’s how training camp is going to shake out. They are going to let everybody battle for a spot but I just don’t think the coaches are high enough on Hall (based off reports we’ve heard all offseason) for him to beat out Gardner, Reed or even Echols. My trade prediction isn’t because we want to get rid of him, it’s going to be because he legitimately “loses” a training camp battle and when other teams see he’s buried on the depth chart they are going to come calling, or vice versa. and again, this is definitely not my preference. He’s young, talented and cheap. Half the reason I didn’t want to go after Gardner but we did and now we have to figure out the rest. I guarantee you Jacksonville is going to be hurting in two years when all of these terrible contracts they headed out this year start mounting up. And just to revisit the snacks contract with the Giants… He was a burden after two years and they had to flat out cut him. I really liked Foley and if he came at all over our price tag I would have said lock him up without question. But he is a two down player, you can’t pay a guy like that $10 million a year
Even with our draft class we still have a bit of cap space left. Here are a some affordable guys we should be looking at to round out our roster: Anthony Barr OLB Sheldon Richardson DT Keelan Cole WR Laurent Duvernay-Tardiff G
