Payton received 44 votes in a season when there were a half-dozen outstanding coaching performances. Eric Mangini of the New York Jets, another first-year head coach, got three votes, while San Diego's Marty Schottenheimer, the 2004 winner, received two. Jeff Fisher of Tennessee got one.
    per ESPN

    3 votes???????
    What a joke.

That's fine. Mangini will prove he should be COTY tomorrow.

As subjective proof that the media will ride a good thing until it ruins said good thing, the Officially Approved 2006 Feel-Good Story of the Year (tm) now just makes me want to say bad things about New Orleans.

The way I look at it is this - when Chad received the comeback player award, I thought the chance of a 2nd Jet getting one of these awards was slim. So I'm not surprised.

That said, 3 votes is pretty rough.

It's hard to argue against Payton, but only 3 votes for Mangini is surprising. Oh well.

Which is true in terms of statistics, but it leaves the sports writers in a bad way in terms of logic. If Mangini was saddled with a quarterback who required a comeback to save his career, without the benefit of not one, but two star NFL running backs, perhaps that might mean that he had a little bit less talent and a little bit harder a job than Sean Payton.

Anyway, it's cool. This won't be the first COTY award that Mangini contends for.

Mangini started Chad after 2 "delicate" Shoulder surgeries. Pennington responed with a playoff birth and CBPOY award

He lucked out is right. Luck is now a testament to ones ability?

Mangini drafted Brick, Mangold, Smith, Washington, and E. Smith. All have contributed to the Jets success.
Mangini was forced to platoon 4 running backs because his future HOF RB could not play all season. The Jets finished with 15 rushing TDs to the Saints 19.

Year that was expected after Chad getting comeback player of the year. Hopefully it just fuels Mangini up and he can take it out tomorrow against the Pats.

I really don't think Eric gives a shit about being coach of the year. He got the Pats to worry about right now.

That's BS! Payton did a great job but Mangini should have got it imo...oh well as long as we win tomorrow i'm sure Mangini won't give a shit.

  14. W/ all the "feel good stories" that this year's saints team represents, due to katrina...Mangini didnt stand a chance.

Unfortunately this wasnt a decision completely based on football.

To say nothing about the lack of actual, honest to God feel good stories surrounding the aftermath of Katrina, but that's for another thread.

Payton winning easily was hardly a surprise, but I am surprised that Mangini didn't get a few more votes. I would bet that if this was done as other awards are, where people vote for 1st, 2nd, etc., Mangini would have been 1st or 2nd on virtually every ballot.
