In FA, I'd love to add Schultz, but will be surprised if that happens. I like Njoku as a receiver, but he's not a blocker, so I'd be surprised if the Jets have any interest in him. After those two, I'm no sure because I don't keep up that much with the rest of the NFL. I've heard good things about Tyler Conklin, and he has good stats, so he might be a possibility if he makes it to FA. The same for Donald Parham if he makes it to FA. They're both young, but I don't know how either block. There's also Robert Tonyan and Mo Alie-Cox who would be decent additions. Durham Smythe of the Dolphins is young and had pretty good stats this past season, but I know nothing about him. In the draft, I'd be happy with any 1-2 of McBride, Ruckert, Wydermyer, Kolar, Likely, Ferguson, and Turner. How about you? Who would you like to see the Jets add in FA and/or the draft at TE?
McBride and Ferguson both can catch and block but Ferguson is a great blocker by all accounts. Also both got along just great with out TE coach at the peanut bowl
I voted WR. Go get Robby Anderson. Loved his interviews. Plus he has that New York Statue of Liberty haircut going for him.
I don't think Schultz makes it to free agency. If he does, I don't think JD will pony up what it would cost to sign hack. I do think Njoku is a real possibility for the Jets. I like all the TEs you've listed above in the draft, although I'm leary on Wydermyer. His hands were suspect in the games I watched. Maybe, I just have PTSD from Herndon in 2020, lol. I also like Dulcich, versatile, can be inline, in the slot, hback. My favorite for the Jets is Ruckert. Underutilized at Ohio State in the passing game, hes a very smooth athlete, makes everything look easy, soft hands. , already a solid blocker.
It will be interesting to see if Schultz does make it to FA. I'm certain that Dallas wants to keep him, as they love their TEs, but they're in cap hell, and to keep him, they may have to let too many others walk or have to cut them to keep him. Wydermyer doesn't block either, but he is the most explosive of the TEs in this draft class. I haven't watched Dulcich, I'll have to do that. I'd be happy if the Jets signed Njoku as they need a reliable receiver at the position, but they place such a premium on TEs blocking in that scheme that I'll be surprised if they do.
not really sure. i tried looking it up, cooper said a few years after the trade it was because they didn't feel his production was good enough for what he wanted and said he had too many drops. from the outside looking in, seems like they were all in on a rebuild as well. they had just traded kalil mack before that. so not really sure. as far as WRs go, robinson is washed at this point and injury prone and older. godwin is good but way ovverated IMO. he isn't a number 1, he's an elite slot guy and good number 2 but wants to be paid like an elite 1. plus coming off a major injury as you said. not sure how you could call godwin a proven 1. he played opposite evans and was the 3rd best WR on his own team this season. kirk is solid but his production never matched his talent so there has to be a reason why. gallup is a solid 2 and similar to davis. smith will be cheap i don't see a reason not to keep him personally. same with mims still on his rookie deal. both should get 1 more year but start off as WR5 and WR6.
Maybe. But I can't remember the last time the Steelers ever traded up for a major acquisition...I don't think that's part of their S.O.P. But this would be great for the Jets if they decided to deviate from that this year.
Ideally the Jets would sign a stud TE in FA to take the pressure off the draft and be able to use that pick for something else - by that I'm not saying that they shouldn't draft a TE but I think they need two studs and using the draft to fill both is risky and prevents using that second TE pick for something else of need. But, as MaximusD pointed out in his excellent analysis of position values, finding a TE who is good at receiving and blocking is like finding a unicorn, and teams who have found one almost never let one go unless they've found a bad flaw in him - like the "horn" was glued onto a horse with Crazy Glue. So in reality, the odds of finding a TE who is a true upgrade over what the Jets already have are slim. Admittedly, I haven't studied players from around the league so maybe there is - or will be - such a "unicorn" available, but then of course the Jets have to convince him - i.e. overpay him which the Jets (not necessarily Douglas) have had bad success with. Bottom line: I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for them to upgrade the TE in FA.
See my reply to Jdub03 regarding finding a stud TE - or one significantly better than what they have - in FA. I'd be happy if they can get McBride (1st choice) or Ruckert...I don't think they should draft two TEs because I think if they get one of those two guys they should focus their draft picks on other positions of need. If JD does draft a 2nd TE I'd be surprised, but trust that he knows what he's doing better than me.
they have a different front office now. Also, they traded up in In the top 10 of the 1st round in 2019 and traded their 1st rounder in 2020 for Minkah Fitzpatrick so they have traded for major acquisitions recently
Yeah, and I think Corey Davis and Elijah Moore can handle being the #1 and #2 WR's if need be. If they re-sign Berrios, he can be the #3. If not, they may re-sign Crowder or Cole. Meaning, if they take a WR in round 1 or 2 and he has growing pains like many WR's do, the Jets can handle it with the rest of their unit as he learns. It would be worth it in the end. Some of these guys flash right out of college now too, which would be an even bigger bonus for the Jets.
anything we can fill via free agency is 1 less draft pick to spend though and we have a lot of needs and not as much money as I thought. I really want us to go defense in the 1st. if we could land hamilton and jermaine johnson with our 1st 2 picks that would be a win in my book. We do need to draft a WR though probably 2 but i'm thinking rounds 3-5 is where we should do that. Value doesn't seem there in the 2nd unless a 1st rounder falls to 35 like moore did for us. We need to address TE as well and value would be good in the 2nd round. I guess a perfect draft for me would be 4)hamilton, 10) johnson, 35) a WR who fell out if the 1st, 38) trade back for extra picks then take a TE like mcbride, wydermeyer, or likely. we'd still have a 3rd, 4th, 2 5ths plus whatever we get in the trade back to look at o-line depth (OG strange seems to be on the jets radar) maybe a 2nd TE, a 2nd WR (calvin austin in the 5th would be great) maybe a RB. things will be clearer after free agency though
I agree that it would be hard to draft two TE "studs" but not two TEs. I definitely think that JD should sign one in FA and draft at least one, if not two. I totally disagree with your bolded statement. You must like the Jets' TEs much more than I do. I think the Jets' TEs are pure shit. Yeboah is the only one worth keeping and he's marginal. He's only worth keeping because he's young, has talent, and was a dynamic receiver in college. He deserves another year. IMO it would be difficult NOT to find someone better. All three TEs they add don't have to be great at both receiving and blocking. Hopefully they get one of those types as a starter. The #2 TE can be a very good receiver and need work on his blocking, and the #3 TE can be great blocker, but need work on his receiving. Yeboah can be #4. If the Jets cannot upgrade the TE position in FA, imo it will be because none of the top 10 or so TEs actually make it to FA, they don't want to play for the Jets, or JD tries to go too cheap with the contract. There is a pretty long list of TEs who are eligible to be FAs. Most of them, I've never heard of, but quite a few of them are on the younger side, so there is hope.
They did not trade up for Ben Roethlisberger. They went 6-10 in 2003 and had the #11 pick naturally. One note of interest is that Roethlisberger was not their first choice to come down to the #11. They wanted Philip Rivers but they chose to stand pat at #11 and they took Roethlisberger when he dropped to that slot. You can just look this stuff up instead of assuming a Steeler pick on the #11 had to be a trade up.
I thought it was a trade up. no reason to get your panties in a bunch over it. just correct it and move on
