Offense Mike White: White’s lack of physical traits was on full display. He was absolutely terrible with any throw that required any touch or off platform. He just can’t throw it deep, so the Bills just crowded the line and White couldn’t make them pay for it. As the day wore on his decisions started to detriorate. Greg Van Roten: I suppose I’ll mention it just to be inclusive, but at this point Greg Van Roten is the worst player on the offense period. He doesn’t seem to make mental errors which I think is why the coaching staff like him but he just doesn’t have the skills. He just gets beaten over, and over, and over again. He is honestly probably a bottom 5 worst O Lineman in the NFL right now. Connor McGovern: McGovern’s athleticism translates well into the zone run game but he is still making mistakes in pass protection. The worst example was when he let Ed Oliver run completely free up the A Gap and smash Mike White in the face… It was called a fumble and then ruled an incomplete pass on review if you recall that play. Alijah Ver-Tucker: Not perfect but another good overall day for the rookie Guard. I only noticed him get beat for a pressure once. Corey Davis: It’s easy to get stuck on that fumble, which was really bad, but he had a sneaky 5 catches for 93 yards and looked like a quality receiving option again. Michael Carter: Once again showed his excellent contact balance and quickness. I worry about longevity though, he is extremely physical for a player of his size. I’m guessing that is why he doesn’t get a higher snap percentage. Elijah Moore: Although he saw almost zero action with Mike White, as soon as Flacco entered the game, Moore immediately showed off excellent body control on a smooth adjustment for a back shoulder catch, and plucked it out of the air. Shortly after, he showed off some really nice shiftiness for a RAC TD. Defense Jarrad Davis: The former 1st round pick showed why he was labeled a bust in Detroit. He falls for any play action or motion and is immediately out of position in coverage. If he has a zone or a man responsibility on a play action pass, you can pretty much guarantee that’s where the ball is going. He also will tend to lose contain and overrun the angle. CJ Mosley: Mosley may be the best LB the Jets have right now, but he looks slower as the season progresses. If it’s not downhill, he can’t close quickly enough to make a play, and if he has to make a solo tackle on a shifty RB in space, he won’t even be close. He plays much better in a more condensed situation. He is by far the smartest LB on the team, and he will put himself in the right place more often than not but he doesn’t have the physical traits to dominate in the small ball game. Anyone notice the Ravens replaced him with Patrick Queen, who is much faster and has a playing weight 20 lbs lighter? Brandin Echols: What a terrible day for Echols. He was beaten up in coverage and was out of place in the run game, all before getting inured around halftime. If you saw this game alone you’d say there is no way this guy belongs in the NFL. Del’Shawn Phillips: Seemed to be of the opinion that defensive assignments are a casual suggestion. Jarrod Wilson: Terrible. Gave up a huge reception to Gabriel Davis as the deep safety, which he spent a lot of the game as. Sherrod Neasman: Limited snaps but did have the interception off the tipped ball and made a couple of decent tackles. Javelin Guidry: Why he is the #3 boundary corner I will never know, he is way too small. He has good speed but didn’t do well outside. Ashtyn Davis: Had what I would say was his best game. He played a lot less deep safety and functioned in some cover 2 and in some shallow zones. Although he could get swallowed by lead block O-Linemen at times, he played much more instinctively and he also had another forced fumble.
Van Roten is terrible but the rest of the line isn't great either, but we still blame everything on GVR. According to PFF, GVR allowed 3 pass pressures and AVT allowed 2. So GVR was one pressure worse than the other guard. There is just a total lack of consistency up front at all 5 spots.
Lol PFF said only 3 for GVR? That’s a joke. I just watched the entire game and he was a liability in the run and pass game over and over and over. AVT was good not perfect, GVR was awful
I cant dispute that PFF is a joke, and its not uncommon for their stats to be wrong. They also credit GVR with only 3 sacks this season and AVT 1.
thank you for this! I haven't watched the film yet of the buffalo game. I will say a few things. white - I think buffalo had it figured out. he caught cincy by suprise with the film they seen he was a brees like player. a guy who just got rid of it quick on easy throws. when they took that away he couldn't do much. it shows why wilson is clearly better talent wise. He'll make plays happen that white simply can't GVR - I can't wait for him to be replaced. I'm betting JD was planning on starting alex lewis until he retired unexpectedly. I remeber having a discussion here with someone and they were saying GVR was good and would beat out lewis. I was like no he's trash. every game I watched film on this season he is by and far our worst lineman. carter - I loved this kid watching his college film. and he's showing it in the NFL now. Next time you watch him, look at his feet. it's ridiculous the way he can move his feet to shift balance and make cuts. so smooth and natural and effective. I'm ok with limiting his snaps. most teams don't use a workhorse back anymore for good reason. moore - so good. every game I see of him he just looks so natural out there. reminds me of a young ODB but without the drama Jarrad Davis - good god he is awful. when I watched the colts game I was looking for ashtyn davis who played well but kept noticing jarrad davis be awful. He was a huge reason why the colts gashed us. he has no gap discipline and overruns every lane allowing for easy cut backs. almsot every single cut back run happened becuase davis. He sucks. out Lbers need a huge overhaul CJ - Looks like he doesn't have it. I agree he's smart he hasn't made errors but he physically doesn't look fast enough for our system. echols - Him I wonder how much is his fault. he's been pretty solid all year and IDK if you seen salehs presser but he mentioned he had a plan against diggs that didn't involve 1v1 with a guy following him and that he specifically designed it for diggs not to beat us and the players didn't execute it. I'm wondering how many of the times echols got beat becuase he should have had help and someone missed an assignment guidry - he's great in the slot but not an outside CB. but with echols and pinnock down I don't think we really had a choice ashtyn davis - gets a lot of shit here and still looks like he's playing out of control but overall he's playing well and fast and I think with 1 more year when the mental game clicks he'll be a good starter for us for a while. He's actually been good all year seems to be around the ball alot and make a lot of fumbles
I didn’t watch the presser, I should though. It’s usually rough to watch Saleh’s presser these days. I will say from what I saw, it was Echols Was at fault. He was in what looked like cover 3 and bit on a play action halfway through a route and gave up a big reception. There was also a run play where he should have been edge contain and jumped inside and gave up a big outside rush. There were more but those two were both big plays
If you look at the season as a whole GVR alone has been responsible for something insane like 30-40% of our overall pressures allowed.
It bothers me a little bit that Guidry was so good in the slot during the 2nd half of 2020, --- yet we spent a draft pick on Michael Carter II. And don't get me wrong, - I like MC II & he's playing great for a 5th round rookie. MC II played safety at Duke. Trying to think if we can move him there so that next year we have ---------- B. Hall ++ 2022 draft pick on the outside, ---- J. Guidry in the slot --- MC II at FS & then get a SS in the 2022 draft or even move Hamsah Nasirildeen there. But alas, ------------- probably don't "fit the scheme".
Michael Carter II is really not built to be an NFL Safety at 5’10” 184. Guidry only played meaningful snaps in 3 games last year, and only 2 were over 50%. MC2 looks like he could be a top level Nickel for the next 3+ years with the Jets. You don’t pass on high quality talent for a rookie UDFA who looked ok in 3 games of a 2-14 season.
I agree that was Davis's best game as a pro, but mainly because he didn't royally screw up or look scared to tackle... Not because of anything he did really. this just isn't true, tape be damned. Also, one of his credited fumbles in the Colts game was actually Mosley.
I don’t really think drafting a guy late like that matters. I didn’t understand why they let Maulet go. He was always running with receivers and seemed like the prime guy to take over in the slot. He’s gotten burned a lot this year when singled up on the outside with the Steelers but that’s not where he belongs. The Jets pretty much need two safeties in all honesty. Davis gave up one of those touchdowns in cover two because he was misaligned and hugged the hash mark. Corner marries the receiver when getting beat to the outside but has no safety help because Davis is sleeping covering the middle of the field. Of course things like PFF doesn’t discredit him for that play because he’s not technically the nearest defender. My biggest gripe with him though is the god awful angles he takes. He finds himself retreating and over running plays. And any run that breaks through to the second level he stops moving his feet through the tackle. The second part is very coachable though and tough to blame him a ton because it happens so frequently against our swiss cheese front.
I like the way you're thinking about this. I agree that maybe either Sherwood or Nasirildeen should be moved back to SS and maybe try Carter II at FS. I like Guidry a lot and was surprised that they drafted Carter to be the slot CB. I like Carter too. I guess they saw him as an upgrade at slot CB. I like the idea of moving Carter to FS if he has the speed. I know he's agile and quick, but I'm not sure about his long speed. Alternatively, I know Guidry is fast, and I think he's a solid tackler, so maybe they could move him to FS and keep Carter II at slot CB.
I didnt see enough of Sherwood or Nasirildeen making an impact at ILB to not at least try moving them to safety. Of course my viewpoint is being skewed by watching teams run right over us lately.............
The plan for the experiment of using a 5th and 6th round pick on two safeties to convert them to LB’s probably never included early season starts. I’m not sure I’d backpedal so quickly, but try and give them some time to fully make the conversion.
Trying my best to restrain myself & think reasonably about things,..............its just getting very frustrating being patient for yet another season these days.
