Wow.. Rex cut loose. Thing is, he's saying the same shit we're saying out here in Jet Nation. Good for Rex for telling it like it is. Saleh has been given a pass up until now..

Its hard to argue with Rex on this one. This is one of the worst Jet defenses I've ever seen.

It doesn't help that we have so little quality talent on this defense because our GM stinks at team building.

I’ve always felt it’s a little easier to scheme your way into having a halfway decent defense to keep games close which is mostly what Rex did even as the players started to get worse as the years went on.

We basically just line up and get railroaded with the same damn cover 3 scheme every play. Very little blitzing even when we’re getting no pressure. Not a lot of run fit adjustments or mixed coverages.

Rex isn't wrong, but that doesn't absolve Rex of all blame from when he was a head coach. He was a horrendous head coach and an unbelievable motivator with a natural ability to run a defense. Saleh is trying to be too much of a head coach and not focusing on how to make the defense work. It's clearly not because he doesn't know how, it's obvious he does, but he's just not adapting to life as a head coach when you don't get to sit and focus on solely the guys you have and how to make them fit. Which presents a whole different issue...

"“This is a horrendous defense,” Ryan said. “This guy is supposed to be a defensive guru. I heard everything, and I take it personal on this one. Everything I heard was about ‘well, this guy is a lot like myself but without the bad part.’ Yeah? Well, some of the bad part you need because this team doesn’t play with any damn heart. That’s the thing that’s disappointing to me. Don’t ever compare this guy to me, this Robert Saleh to me.”

I wouldn’t call Rex a horrendous head coach. Mediocre, for sure. But there have been much worse.

I think he's a terrible head coach in terms of managing a team. He clearly knows HOW to coach. I mean take away his first two years, or even just knock them down to "made the wildcard game". Does he still hold the same value in your head? To me his body of work after 2010 speaks volumes. And I friggen loved Rex. Still do.

Where's the fire and passion from Saleh? Rex had his flaws, but he wasn't stoic all the time.

Listened to this live this morning. I don't disagree with a lot of what he said, but the dude lost all credibility when he said he knows how to develop a young rookie QB. Excuse me if I'm wrong, but didn't he have to go red light green light yellow light with Sanchez his rookie year? Didn't Mark become one of the works QBs in the league under Rex? What is he talking about? Just because he has a tattoo of his wife wearing a 6 jersey doesn't mean you developed him correctly.. damn

Rex hasn’t gotten a DC job or anything since correct?

Saleh needs to get his hands on the defense now.

Rex had an immensely more talented team, but I don't think he's way off here. Saleh's bread and butter is defense/motivation. This is a putrid defense, and the team is often looking unmotivated and flat. Right now, Saleh needs to show me he's a better coach than Gase, let alone at Rex's level.

For all his faults (and there were a bunch), Rex was a solid head coach with a winning record in the playoffs. I imagine it gets frustrating for him hearing coaches like Bowles and Saleh get compared to him when they haven't had nearly the same level of success.

Having said all that, Rex is also a loudmouth who loves to hear himself talk. Its probably part of the reason he isn't in the NFL now.

The lack of screaming and yelling =/= lack of effort or motivation. Rex is a blowhard. He's acting like he's Lombardi all of a sudden. He was a coach that took Mangini's players and made it work. He sucked at developing his own players and cared way too much about defense in a league that was rapidly shifting to the offensive driven league we see now. To say that he could develop a QB better than Saleh is the most asinine thing I've ever heard. He got a shot with Mark and Geno.

The Jets do not have the players to run the defense they're trying to implement, which falls on both Douglas and Saleh. We don't have dominant edge rushers, we do have very good IDL pass rushers. We don't have run stopping linebackers besides CJ Mosley. We don't have NFL level safeties. We have rookie CBs that are struggling in the run game. It is a mix of coaching and a lack of talent. Douglas and Co. got too cute on day 3 of the draft taking safeties they wanted to convert to LBs instead of just drafting actual run stuffing LBs.

EDIT: The Jets have the most snaps taken by rookies in the NFL right now. They stripped everything down last year and decided to go with a youth approach this year. I know it's tiring to hear, but we need to give Douglas and Saleh some patience. Three weeks ago this board and many other Jets fans were screaming for Mike LaFleur's head and now he's fine. Give it some time. If this defense looks like this at this point next year then I'll be right there with everyone else lighting a fire under Saleh's seat.

I sort of get what he's saying there. Sanchez was always one of the worst starting QB's in the league while he was here yet we still had immense success with him. It's very hard to do as well as those teams did while starting a QB as bad as Sanchez. The team had to be firing on all cylinders otherwise.

I guess that could be considered more working around Sanchez than developing him but I think that's what Rex meant.

I totally disagree with your last sentence. No talent on D? ROFLMAO Dude, we have plenty of talent on that unit. It's the lack of quality coaching and/or scheme that is bad.

This team is more talented this year on D than last year and Greg Williams didn’t let them get embarrassed like they are this year with lesser talent. This team goes from being a laughingstock on offense for so many years and now transferring that over to the defense while the offense improves. It’s depressing and Salah being hired as a former DC has to be held accountable for that.

Defensive issues aren't talent related. Come on guys. Secondary was suspect and even they are holding their own. Scheme sucks, coaching sucks. So done with Saleh I hate myself for giving up on a guy this quick. I still will give him rest of this season to see some change in Defense, or else, fuck him. Bring another shiny toy

It's always amusing when Jet fans diminish Rex Ryan's accomplishments.

It's been ten years since the Jets were a threat to anyone.

It's been ten years since the Jets were in the playoffs.

It's been ten years since the Jets were fun to watch.
