I'm gonna add in 1 more. injuries helped us. zach was forcing the ball to davis a lot. He's his favorite target. others like moore were open but zach wasn't looking his way. with zach and davis out, white spread the ball a lot better. He's alos using the RBs a lot more. white out of his 45 attempts threw 20 to the RBs. out of the 25 to WRs crowder got 9, 3 others were between 3-6 and 4 others got 1-2. 10 different players caught passes. it's the same thing with mayfield and OBJ and how mayfield was just better without him.
it's wrong though. it dropped from 32% to 26% and it was the same time kroft got hurt which would explain the drop. the big difference is we dropped usage of 2 RBs completely and upped usage of 4WRs by 11%
gotta remember crowder is our "trick play guy" and he was out those first few weeks. I'm suprised we don't use jeff smith on trick plays more. he's fast (4.36 40) and was a college QB so he can at least throw good enough for a trick play.
This. White can process and read the defense remarkably faster than Wilson right now. I don't know the number but I can tell White gets the ball out very quickly, doesn't flinch under pressure. He has the ability to make the OL and WR jobs much easier right now by being quick, efficient, and accurate. These are traits that you NEED for basic fundamental football at the QB position. Which Is even more Important than being some flashy QB, If you can have both, you have a superstar. Obviously. I want to see what White has beyond that as well. I know people are concerned with the deep stuff. I'm not concerned, curious though. White simply operates this offense better right now. Just from being quick, accurate, and decisive. I was wrong about this offense. It is good, as long as you have someone that can operate It effectively. Regardless. Progress. A possible glimpse at our future on offense. I can get behind It. I don't care who the QB Is, as long as they produce.
I disagree with the bold. Those are traits that may be needed for THIS offense to be effective but not fundamental football. Theoretically, Zach SHOULD be able to match all the aforementioned traits that you say White is exhibiting in time. It’s a matter of the Jets electing for it to materialize vs going with the instant gratification of White which may be fleeting. It’s obvious you’ve made your decision. The Jets have made there’s as well at least for this week.
I wouldn’t say 100% but a lot of it is white getting the ball out to his playmakers on time . We shouldn’t act like lafleur started drawing new plays when Zach got hurt, because he didn’t. These are the same pass plays Zach had he just was 1. locking on to Davis, 2. Dealing with some pass pro issues or 3. Taking to long to get to the easy pass because he wanted the big play abd at times a combination of any of the 3.
How Is It not basic football? Understanding pre-snap/post-snap reads, being accurate, react efficiently within the pocket. What Is your definition of basic fundamental football at the QB position? I don't understand what Is more basic than that? Going for the youtube highlight every play Is not basic fundamentals. I also did not claim Wilson Isn't capable of getting these fundamentals down, he clearly does not have them at this time. Perhaps watching White play, will help with that though.
I totally agree with everything except the first sentence, and sadly, that sentence is totally ludicrous and has no relationship with reality, imo. We ALL know that the play calling has been better and different since LaFleur moved to the booth. We all know that the WRs aren't dropping the ball in bunches, that the OL is blocking better, and that the RBs are playing much better. Sadly, the TEs are still a black hole, but that will get fixed next offseason. White and Johnson aren't playing hero ball for several reasons. One, they're smart veterans and know they don't have to do that in this defense. Two, they don't do it because they don't have the arm talent to do that. Three, neither wants to risk taking the beating that Zach did in the first 6 games. Four, they may have been instructed by Saleh and/or LaFleur not to do that. Earlier, LaFleur was infatuated with Zach's arm talent and was trying to take advantage of opponents' secondaries before Zach and the offense got in sync and on a roll.
The implication was that Zach didn’t possess the “traits” needed for “basic fundamental football”. I disagree with that. Not taking check downs is not a trait. It’s a decision or tendency at best. One that can be curbed or completely corrected for a player this young with experience and/or coaching. There’s nothing White does that Zach can’t. White is just more consistent at certain nuances of the game at this stage. It may be just semantics but lacking the necessary traits would suggests to me he will never be able to do certain things like a QB who lacks the trait of arm strength wouldn’t be able to make certain throws.
Zach never had any of those trick pass plays, or if he did, they were never called. It may be the same plays otherwise, but the whole offense is executing on a much higher level than they were in games 1-6 and that is huge, and the plays are being mixed up and called better and in better situations (not running on 1st and 2nd down and leaving Zach with 3rd and long). I agree with the rest.
Well, It Is based on a reasonable reality. I'm not saying I agree with It completely, you can't deny though, this offense took off once the QB had been changed out. I don't think It's realistic to think that all of a sudden every aspect of this offense just got that much better once Zach Wilson got hurt. We will see soon enough. For me, I'm leaning towards inexperience. The ability for a QB to operate within an offense properly, while having the ability to make those around you better. To me, White has shown that In a small window. Wilson, has not. I blame inexperience for that, results seem to line up that way for me as of now. As far as arm talent. I don't think White Is near that skill either. I'm not so sure White can't make the deep throws either, It's hard to say until the defense starts showing us those looks. Right now, they have just been taking what's there. I'm just happy that this Is the problem we are having right now, instead of just straight dysfunction and chaos. Progress.
Being fundamentally sound Isn't about your physical traits though. It's a foundation that you use as your basic starting point In order to operate around a specific task or function. Check downs are a very basic standard for almost every offense, especially In the NFL. I too, agree, from a physical standpoint. Wilson Is the superior talent. From a fundamental and mental standpoint. White, Is much more advanced. Right now. I also think that White has the capabilities to perform all the physical traits you would need at the position as well. That Is TBD still though. Anyway. I think the perception/understanding that we both have, Is the issue for us, not the context of the overall discussion between us currently.
I love this post! Perhaps unfairly, three months ago I would have been shocked to see you post something like this, but not now. Kudos to you! In defense of 11MeanDean11, I didn't read it where he was saying that Zach didn't possess the requisite traits needed for basic fundamental football. I read it as he was saying that at this point, White can execute the offense better than Zach right now because White is making quicker, more decisive decisions (and the offense is moving the ball and scoring points). Not all of this offense is taking short passes, however and checkdowns. We still don't know whether White can stand in there take the shots downfield that need to happen and take any hits that may come his way as a result. I think that like a lot of Jets fans, they are exhausted with all the losing and struggles. They just want to see the Jets win or at least be competitive. I can understand that and respect it. I still think it short-sighted and not what is best for the team, but can understand how their thinking has been influenced by all the losing.
I respectfully disagree. Yes, Zach was a big part of the reason for the change, but not 100% or anywhere close to that. That is the part that is ludicrous. The offense didn't wake up the day Zach was injured and was suddenly better. It has been getting better week by week. The OL playing a little better, the RBs feeling more comfortable in the offense, and the same with the WRs. If the only fact that changed was Zach getting hurt, then one could reasonably claim that it was 100% due to White playing instead of Zach, but that's not the case. LaFleur moved to the booth, stopped running most of the time on 1st and 2nd downs, leaving 3rd and longs for Zach, and started passing more on 1st down. He involved the RBs more in the passing game. Moore started playing better. Moore and Zach had great chemistry in TC, so you can't say that it was Zach's injury that made Moore start playing better.
I'm not saying I agree. I'm just saying, I could see how others could make that conclusion. If that makes sense.
“Traits” is a trigger for me because since the preseason I’ve been questioning, to much opposition on this board, a couple specific traits of his: accuracy & ball placement. Based on his style of play those 2 traits IMO need to close to elite in order for him to reach the lofty potential bestowed upon him. They been less than advertised to put it mildly. I didn’t think at this point of the season we’d be drawing comparisons to young Josh Allen but here we are. Just so everyone understands my point of view, I’m not interested in getting a solid starter. I ultimately expect and want a Mahomes/Rogers level type. That’s the lens I’m watching Zach through.
