Also a very valid argument. We’re either hiring guys who are learning on the job or cheap former coaches who are former coaches for a reason. One of these times we’ll hit on the learn on the job guys hopefully.
My positive take on this is that we’ve basically cornered the market on first time coaches making the quick turnaround and then flaming out. Pretty much every first time Johnson coach has had that happen so maybe us sucking in year 1 is a positive and pattern breaker!
We never seem to be in position to hire an experienced HC who the game hasn't passed by. The jury is still out on Saleh. If he doesn't learn and grow into an above average HC, it's back to square one in a few years.
Hopefully. It's obvious they adjust and learn, but i have to see lafleur do it consistently. He called a good game last week then f/u with his throw dow. Field on first down crap again.
Yup. I’m definitely more optimistic about Saleh long term than LaFleur, but tbh I think how he handles LaFleur if Zach doesn’t develop like he should will be his biggest test. This is why you don’t hire your friends!
You had Mike McCarthy ready to take this shits show and turn it around MM was a SB winning Coach like Gruden out in las Vegas BUT he wanted the Johnsons to give him some big bucks and power I would have rolled the dice on him versus Gase...and Saleh and LaFleur look like Novices Is Joe Douglas our answer ?? If his Choices for HC and QB etc bomb it would be a HUGH disappointment and we are stuck!! So thanks Woody and Chris for the long term forever screw job I will not buy any Jets stuff or go to Metlife till we have a Playoff caliber team. Only way to deal with Johnsons
I do not care if we suck this season as long as we make progress. Zach was just plain awful in the first half, but I thought he was quite solid in the second half. You can see this kid learn as he plays. Yeah, I wish he would play better out of the gate, but I think second half improvement in most of his games shows a lot. I am very encouraged. let’s face it we dug a huge hole and we were one 3 and 13 stop away from having a legit shot to pull this game out. It would have been a fun finish if we had gotten that stop. in the big picture, as long as I see Zach and the rest improving from week to week or even just improving within games from half to half, I am totally ok. If we only win three or four and get a high stud draft pick, that plus improvement with experience can make a huge change to the trajectory. I give kudos to the coach and the team for not quitting and making a legit game out of what could have been a total rout.
Yea I wasn’t big on McCarthy, but if it’s him or Gase I’m taking him 100 times out of 100. He seems to be doing a good job this year, but not sure if he would’ve been the best choice for a young team. Though he probably wouldn’t have ruined Sam beyond the point of no repair here. Look what a competent coaching staff is doing with him. Honestly I wanted Brady this year. If we were going for a first timer I think he would’ve been a home run hire. I like Saleh, but Brady was my top choice.
- Defense made from bits n' pieces players that flash every now and again but consistently fail on third n' long - Offensive rebuild that made a QB the first piece of the jigsaw when it should have been the final piece. - Under-investment on special teams - Constantly rebuilding due to the same above three mistakes above being made over and over again - A fan base that buys into pre-season "alpha-dog" hype when we have been fucking trash for 50 years Yes, I've had a really bad day.
1) Saleh is going to be a great HC in the NFL. Ulbrich is a stud DC. La Fleur is a ? 2) Douglas is a solid GM who is a good negotiator and has brought in some solid talent--whiffed on some picks but overall he's done decent building the right way 3) Young talent on defense is promising 4) McGovern is overpaid and underwhelming and Van Rotten sucks 5) We need a competent TE 6) We need one more elite pass rusher 7) The QB is a huge question mark right now and we wont be an elite team until that's fixed, we can be solid if everything else develops (see Colts)
We commit too many back breaking penalties and allow too many bad 3rd down conversions on defense. Wilson misses too many easy throws. Moore has been largely invisible. LaFleur is still too predictable. Saleh is overly conservative on 4th down. We are always playing from behind due to consistent slow starts.
Another wild take. He's 47-22 and has made the playoffs in 3 of his first 4 years and dragged Jared Goff to a Super Bowl whilst not having a first round pick in his entire tenure. McVay is a fantastic head coach.
Mike McCarthy would've been a trainwreck equal to or greater than what happened with Adam Gase here in New York. They win in spite of him in Dallas not because of him.
I know this is something of a joke thread but I would say the main reason is the Jets have not had a franchise QB in 30+ years. Every team that has enjoyed consistent success has had a top 10 QB on their roster during that time (only possible exception was the Ravens with Flacco) Added to this: - incredibly bad drafting has left us without any sort of base or depth - 2014 being a particular low point - lack of commitment to any single approach or mindset means we start over every 3 years or so and nothing ever has time to stick and the new regime wants to start over with their vision and their guys - have not had a pass rush since John Abraham left
