The OL was putrid but I’m not ready to panic. This is the first time these 5 have all played together. If they are this bad by week 3 or 4 then I’ll panic.
The Jets were out of football games by the 2nd quarter last year. Saleh should not have gone for it at mid field so early in the game. Everyone made enough mistakes in the game which led to the loss. All of this will be cleaned up as the season goes along. I’m surprised this forum is already losing it after one game.

I was as upset as anyone by the OL's play in the 1st half, but I think it's preposterous to be questioning JD's ability as a talent evaluator at this point. You do realize that OL play is about the 5 players working as a unit and not as individuals, right? Becton wasn't there in OTAs or the mini-camp, and then AVT got injured. Moses and Fant were competing and alternating. The starting OL got very few reps together in TC and none in preseason action. I realize that it was just unrealistic on my and others' parts to expect the OL to have played well in this game, particularly with Becton struggling in this new scheme.
Fans, by definition, tend to not be rational. That doesn't mean they can't have valid concerns though.
Definitely. I am as tired and impatient as anyone. But let’s just see how they respond to this game before losing it. Just the fact that there were halftime adjustments makes me have hope.
It’s not that Saleh shouldn’t have gone for it. He tried to set a tone and take the bull by the horns. The problem was the play call. Pathetic run up the middle with as bad as the OL was playing. I agree with your last sentence. I attribute some of that to raw emotions immediately after the game and the fact that we all know Darnold is very beatable and perhaps this was a victory that got away. There is good to take away from this game and I’m not talking about the replacement punter. I felt Zack showed a lot of athleticism and seemed to pick up the pace as the game went on. Not bad considering he was running for his life when he wasn’t on his back. Corey Davis played like the #1 WR he was signed to be. The young secondary including Carter, Guidry, and Hall all played very well against a talented group of WRs.....
I have concerns as well, I’m just going to wait till the 3rd or 4th week to open the barn doors and start rummaging for my best pitchfork. My concern in particular is Lafleur, I truly think, that what Joe and Saleh wanted in offensive philosophy is opposite to what he likes to do. However I want to be proven wrong and I’m going to give the team a couple of weeks to iron out wrinkles.
Well what Joe and Saleh want in an OL hasn’t come to fruition yet. While some of it is a lack of unison and having not played together much this training camp - the rebuild is not complete yet. The Jets need another high OL pick next year and really need to get Becton figured out. If he really doesn’t fit as a LT in this system what do they do with him? Trade him? Move him over to guard? He’s built like a guard really. Would Joe even consider that?
Also, Carolina has a pretty damn good d. Burns and Brown are first round picks and they got a strong back 7 too.
Like any young team, Jets will have to learn how to put together two solid halfs of football. And that can only be done by experiencing some tough losses and taking some knocks along the way. This still could be a close to .500 team if the OL figures out their assignments. Wilson showed he can keep the team in the game, even after being mugged for three quarters.
But they have to be able to block their assignment as individuals.It wasn't just missed assignments I saw. It was just terrible blocking. There was one play where it was Becton and Vera-Tucker versus one guy. He splits both of them. They are so bad that on any given play someone is getting beat. At times multiple people are getting beat. A couple of time three defenders hit Wilson at the same time. Becton and Tucker were supposed to anchor this line but right now they're terrible. now Becton is injured. The other guys are even worse. Hopefully, Saleh realizes that these people can't block and focuses on quick short passes, screens, and roll-outs.
It's not a bad call. I agree it's a dumb decision to go for it at midfield in a close low scoring game like this. The play fails because #86 Ryan Griffin totally wiffs his block / chip on the DE. He had one job to do there and did nothing.
It's difficult to evaluate the O-game when pretty much every run was stuffed for three yards or less and pass protection barely lasted milliseconds. I'm suprised some gadget plays weren't wheeled out towards the end of the first half. There was enough good stuff in there to be hopeful for the future but that was one of the more winnable games on the schedule. Hopefully some of the nonsense off-season optimism has been put back in check and we can concentrate on looking to the future rather than predicting wildcard spots.
I hope that’s not the case. Im a big believer that the team will go as far as the OL takes them but they shouldn’t need 3 first or second round picks on it to make it functional.
this. the call was tp go behind becton bt the de got OLE tr5eatment as griffin whiffed.. RB caught from behind ands the above abput OL just getting beat is true as hell. and sas as hell looking frward if it doesnt get better.
This is a good take. Fewer preseason games and the changes to practices over the last 5+ years has been harder on the OL than anywhere else in the game. You just can't simulate blocking together as a group without full contact from the other side. So, with the group playing together literally for the 1st time yesterday, the 2nd half was at least respectable, not great by any stretch, but respectable. I do worry about Becton, though. This guy can't stay healthy and is starting to have bust written all over him.
