that brings his cap down from 7.5 mil to to about 4 mil and makes him a FA after this season

I don't want him to be a starter, but at least this move allows him to be either a cheaper starter or an OK backup.

I was sort of hoping he would get cut, but I suppose we have to keep some of the vets on the team.

I don't think we keep 5 OGs. AVT is guaranteed. then we have GVR, feeney, clark, and lewis. 1 of them is getting cut but all 4 are fighting for the starting RG job.
for OT it's likely becton and fant starting with mcdermott and edoga as the backups.

My guess is either Lewis or Rotten will get cut with Feeney (because of the $3 million in guarantees) and Clarke both close to locks for roster spots. With a 3 way battle for the starting spot between Clarke, Rotten and Lewis.

I think Van Roten might be on thinner ice, but who knows. Like you said, someone definitely will be cut. Lewis might stick though as I believe Joe Douglas likes him.

I thought that earlier when I read the restructure news. Douglas has a soft spot for Lewis. Nothing wrong with that, but he supported him last year, and now is giving him a shot instead of cutting him. Definitely a Joe Douglas decision.

I think the O-line is in better shape than in many season. Becton, Vera-Tucker, McGovern and Fant look like starters. The one weak spot is right guard, but with so many guys fighting for the spot, maybe one of them will step up and be decent. That is the hope. If so, the O-line can definitely protect Wilson, run the ball, and give the team a chance to succeed.

Whichever guard is better at running left and right versus straight ahead will win the spot.

Maybe Clark wins the RG job and Lewis becomes a backup.

I saw something on Twitter today that indicated that Lewis was dealing with "issues" last season. Whether that means family issues, drinking issues, addiction issues, or what, but it seems that they've given him support and some patience. Hope it pays off for the team.

yeah he was. that is why he was put on the exempt list late in the season but they never specified what it was. Rumor was a drinking problem/rehab. but that's unconfirmed. JD chose to exempt him and keep him on the team so he can get paid and get help from the team for whatever it was.

This is the ideal scenario. Would be a very cheap starter for 3 seasons.

Lewis is awful. Not worth keeping at 3M.
Hopefully Clarke shows something, anything, and they still release Lewis.

nothing is guarenteed. he has to earn his spot. him GVR, clark, and feeny will battle for the RG job. all 3 are making about the same (less clark on a rookie deal) at 3-4 mil. so it's an even field. 1 of the 3 is likely to be cut. possibly we keep all and put clark on the PS. he should be eligable still

A lot can happen between now and first game of the season. Its important to have back up help and flexibility in case of injuries. We can not be thin at the OL position with a rookie QB. Smart move financially while keeping our options open.

Sounds like the recent assessment of Clark is that he's not ready [NY Jets rumors: Cameron Clark not seen as a starting option (thejetpress.com)].

I still think that one of Van Roten, Lewis, or Feeney will emerge as a solid RG option. I'm leaning toward Van Roten based on the PFF assessment. They say that Van Roten "has been a consistently above-average pass-blocker in the NFL, even if his run blocking has been less than ideal on a similarly consistent basis." I think the priority has to be to give Wilson a consistently clean pocket for him to develop confidence in his passing (i.e., as opposed to what happened to Darnold).

could be. I think it'll be a good battle. we also just hosted morgan moses who is a RT and graded out at 80.6 per PFF last year (fant was a 61.6 and becton was a 74.4) so if we sign him he could start at RT and fant can compete for the RG spot as well where he is probably better suited anyway and gives us more flexibility. Doesn't sound like clark is gonna work out in the long run for us. I could see him being put on the PS at this point for 2021.

If we sign Moses, I'd make Fant the backup LT/RT and cut Edoga, and maybe McDermott.

fant would do good as a RG. better then GVR or lewis IMO. and he can be a swing OT for injuries and one of the backup OGs could take his spot. Also edoga is better then mcdermott so mcderott would likely be the odd man out.
