Why does the superior physical talent have to be more exposed? Would the Jets invest any less in the offensive line of they picked Fields over Wilson? Funny you referenced Big Ben as he just led the league in snap to throw. No one got rid of the ball faster than Ben last year. There’s been years when he’s been near the bottom of those rankings.
Is he a better passing talent than Wilson? I don't think so. I'd rather have the guy who's better at doing the thing QB's need to do well 95% of the time.
Because when you reference his physical talent the implication is that he'd use that to get more yards, no? What good is a 4.4 if you're staying in the pocket all the time? Using that physical talent to your advantage comes with inherent risks. I'd rather not have our most important player risking unnecessary injury. I think there's a fairly valid argument to be made that if you fully utilize Fields' physical talents he'd end up being more injury prone than Wilson.
How do you compare sack rates and pressures when one player is playing behind much more dominant pass protection relative to the competition he is facing?
That’s probably because in your mind fully utilizing Fields’ physical talent equates to something like RGIII, Lamar Jackson, Vick..etc. I don’t view Fields in that light. So that’s where there’s a disconnect. In my mind he’s more in the Dak, Russell Wilson, Watson...etc. mold where running is an added dimension but does not define his game.
Did I say that?. Much to the contrary. this is what I said. "So either pick, the style needs to address less exposure to the NFL hits" In reference to Ben, thru out their respective careers both Ben and Cam took a lot more chances and hits because of their superior physical skills that they need it too. Not by design, but their nature. Hence the injuries. Last year Ben physicality was a distant shadow of his career.
You compare it by pressure rate as that makes everything equal. When Under pressure Fields took twice the sacks of of Wilson and Jones and Fields a whole lot more. Compare Field's 25 percent sack rate to that of Sanchez's 24 percent rate in 2011. In 2011 Sanchez had the 5th least number of pressures, 11th least QB hits but the worst sack rate of any QB in the league by a long shot despite still having one of the best performing offensive lines in the league. The number of pressures is irrelevant although Wilson and Fields almost had the identical number of pressures in 2020 despite Wilson getting rid of the ball faster than Fields.
IDK mahomes just had surgery for turf toe, maybe the cheifs should cut him because injury concern. and we all know how awful brees was after his shoulder surgery
This is not true. Some of the Big 10, SEC, ACC etc. employ pro style defenses, definitely NOT all. For example, Clemson doesn't. Its a quintessential college style defense. The type in "the G5" that you are criticizing. Ironically, thats the game Fields did his best with and against Northwestern (NFL style) he did his worst.
Isn't Wilson in the mold of those guys too? Even more so than Fields I'd argue. Wilson is a mobile QB who is always looking to pass before run. Fields is a mobile QB who's so athletic that he's extremely prone to running at the first sign of trouble. The data backs that up about Fields.
Wilson is injury prone with a torn labrum. We should 1000% take Trevor Lawrence if he falls to us..........
Wilson has 2 prior shoulder surgeries in his throwing shoulder AND a torn a labrum in his non throwing one. How are the situations remotely the same? Nice try though.
Clemson switched back to the traditional 4-3 this year after Isaiah Simmons left who was the X-factor that made the 3-3-5 possible. https://rubbingtherock.com/2020/05/19/clemson-football-switch-4-3-defense-allows-youth-grow/amp/ They played a base nickel 4-2-5 against Fields and Ohio State with some wrinkles. A lot of cover 1 man robber and then they tightened everything up when they were getting blown out. Not all, but most.
