Your hate on Darnold is unparalleled. You clearly have no fate on him fine. It is still better to have competition for the QB job and/or slowly get Wilson up to par with NFL speed before playing him. I mean let's be realistic the Jets are not making the playoff next year no mater who is the actual QB, even brady/rodgers/mahomes could not do miracle with the worst offensive line in pro football, worst running back in pro football and worst receivers in pro football. The offense is set to fail right now. It will be long, it will be painful and hopefully by next year the Jets can at least have a slightly below average offense and not the current shit show.
Another way to think about it is "Would you trade 3 1s and a 3rd and a 4th FOR Zack Wilson if you were the jets are drafting around 6-11 overall? If the answer is no, then that is what you are giving up by taking him at 2. The jets WOULD get that much for him via Carolina Denver or Phil.
it's exactly what the chargers did with brees/rivers. brees was potential and not playing well after 3 seasons and in his final year. The chargers drafted eli who was traded for rivers because well you know. anyway brees had a great year and then blew out his shoulder the 2nd to last week of the season. the chargers let him walk and went with rivers. Prior to that there were rumors we would trade for rivers and they would keep brees and extend him. then rumors we would try to sign brees but having an injured chad who we paid 60 mil too made it too risky to pay big money to 2 Qbs coming off shoulder surgery. he had the choice of miami or NO. he went to No and won a SB and made them a competitive team for over a decade. The moral of this is, you can't have too many potentially good QBs on a roster and flexibility is a good thing. as is letting a rookie QB sit for a season and learn. We didn't sign a back-up for a reason, I think it's because sam will start and wilson will sit a season
The chances of the Brees/Rivers situation working out a second time are extremely minimal. And at this point I'd like to keep Darnold rather than toss him into the gutter for a mid round pick. It'd be cool though and a good situation to have if Darnold plays well.
WRONG!!!! I do not hate Darnold. Look at other posts I've made. I've said that JD is doing Darnold wrong, that imo JD ought to have already traded Sam to the team where he would have the best chance to fix his issues, develop and succeed. JD is doing Sam no favors keeping him here to start this year. Sam needs to be sitting and focusing on his issues, not playing. I want Wilson to sit initially, and thought JD should have signed Beathard or Tyrod Taylor to start initially. I know that they're not making the playoffs and have said that many times. You are totally barking up the wrong tree!
I think with some help he could have taken a step up. When I think of the picks they could get for their number two, giving Sam a legit shot doesn’t seem so bad. I hope I’m wrong and Wilson is great.
you never know. maybe sam plays well this year. morgan and wilson back him up. he gains enough value for a tag and trade so wilson can take over. or maybe sam goes beats mode and we can trade wilson for a kings ransom. or maybe sam sucks and he walks and we start wilson. either way it still seems the best way to go
Does swapping first round picks really count as a 1? I get that people say it all the time but to me getting three ones means 3 additional #1's.
You mean, opinions can...change? *gasp* I used to have a Fields avatar too. For a long time I thought he should be the clear choice at #2. I changed my mind after doing more research on him and Wilson. This was before the Wilson media hype machine so I wasn't influenced by that.
Same here. I agree, when a team drops down (swaps positions) it's what they get for the swap that counts.
You know, I've said it before and I'll say it again. Rookie, drafted, QB's come to the New York Jets to die. Darnold NEVER had a chance and neither will anyone else. This team has never developed jack shit at that position!
In the case of Sam, the bringing of Gase combined with the roster picks by our clueless GM acerbated an already bad situation and was one of the biggest travesties of all. Sam wasn’t ready to start but did better in his rookie year, Gase system completely took him out of his development and comfort zone, not to mention mediocre weapons to boot.
I think there is a chance he's the opening day starter but Don't know if wilson replaces him somepoint in 2021 or if we wait until 2022
I agree, but JD is just basically using Sam now, treating him like an asset rather than a person. If Sam is still here and starting it's going to put a TON of pressure on him, and that's the last thing he needs at this point.
The thing is the Jets can't really afford to trade Sam. I'm assuming that Mike White will be cut sooner rather than later, but may stay through TC. If the Jets trade Sam during the draft, during TC, preseason or once the season begins, that leaves them with Wilson and Morgan. What if neither are ready to start? Mullens will probably be re-signed or signed elsewhere by then. Alex Smith could be gone. He's has left the Jets with no quality veteran QB even if he keeps Sam. He has the cap space. He doesn't need to go "cheap." I think that his constantly seeking to go "cheap" could be the thing that undermines his success and career. So it will suck for both the Jets and for Sam. Wilson or Morgan could get thrown to the wolves, and Sam's chances to resurrect his career likely take a big hit.
I think it's a done deal. I think if JD was trading Sam, it already would have happened. It still could happen in the next week. If it happens after that I'd be stunned.
