I never said they will. I am assuming that they are the only potential candidate to have a definite need at QB and the assets to trade up. As for Philly's trade offer.. never heard of it? What was it?
The Eagles didn’t follow thru bc thew knew Wilson would be gone by 3.... they now have 3 1st Rd picks next year... I wonder how bad they want Wlison...
So I guess if they send all 3 to Ohio State pro day that must mean they want no one from Alabama? Texas A&M? Tulane? Washington? What if Saleh goes to check out Patrick Johnson?
I can guarantee you JD knows exactly what he's doing right now. Fields proday and Wilson's proday doesn't mean much when it comes to evaluating a player, especially a QB. A guy throwing in shorts with no pads and no defense with wide receivers he is familiar with is not going to sway a GM one way or the other. And I never said there was a "brotherhood of GMs" who share their plans. I said that JD and Roseman are good friends and have worked together in the past. It is not out of the normal for them to communicate, especially considering Philly is in an entirely different division. This is not news. GMs have been doing things like that for years. There are tons of stories of GMs communicating behind the scenes just as the story about Mac and him looking to draft Baker. Many Jets reporters are discussing this saying something similar about Philly and JD.
I don’t know what many here are expecting Wilson to turn out to be. I am reading like Wilson is going to be the next Phenomenon, a la Elway or Peyton. As much it would be nice that Wilson turns out to be like one of those high end QB prospects that turned out well, let’s just not get too overboard or excited and just get a QB that will be better than what Darnold has shown the last 3 years. It doesn’t have to be a 300 yard guy every game. Whether it’s Fields or Wilson, Let’s just hope one turns out to be solid and give Jets a decent balance and offensive game. And for our minds sakes let’s just hope JD hits a grand slam in this years draft!!!
I have never read so much opposite view about a QB prospect ever in my life. (About Wilson) I have listened to a lot of podcast and read many ranking. A lot of people think he is the mesiah, other think he is a bust and way overrated. Those who love Wilson, they really love him! They see him as the next Mahomes/Rogers. A guy that can make all the throws from any angle and off-platform. Those who does not like him or rate him as high (usually these guy are very high on Fields) see him as a one year wonder and with no pedigree.(small school, unproven against top teams, average tape, generic average QB basicaly) with a lot of people throwing the name of Trubisky and as best case Mayfield. I am leaning toward Wilson has a special talent. I can see why many teams are excited with him because of his abilities to operate with ease in the pocket and throw perfect balls under any circumstances and have quick release of the ball. These are all elite traits. I don't know about phenomenon. I think this is a very strong draft class in general with a lot of potential. Which kinda explain why maybe for the first time ever QBs could be selected straight from 1 to 4 overall.
I think you got the details wrong. Hughes says the Jets were already at 3 and he thought about talking to the Giants to get to 2 when he heard Elwah wanted Darnold but he chose not to and stuck to his guns instead.
It's not a coincidence that the sports media world has hitched their wagon to a blonde haired white kid from a heavily involved religious university..
Damn dude you are better than this, these biases have existed for QBs since the NFL existed and it always came down to arm strength, height, weight and command presence, it’s all about the prototypical image that teams have of what a leader should look like. Some of the greatest QBs who also were considered busts or not good enough. Tom Brady, probably the best example of how biased thinking plummeted him to a 6th round pick. Joe Montana, another example of biases about his size and arm strength that pushed him down to the 3rd round. Russel Wilson, another great QB who was considered to small to play at an elite level, 3rd round pick. Steve Young, went from being considered top QB in draft to a bust in Tampa, went to Niners and fulfilled his potential. Joe D has told us that he already has his board established and 90% of player assessment was complete, the finishing touches would be done on Pro Day with interviews on zoom. Joe already has his player selected whether we want to believe it or not.
I'm far from a social justice warrior. But it's curious that they media has latched on to this kid and given Fields pretty much zero attention. When we narrow in on the bold, Fields wins all four categories. If you want to argue he loses command, he's still three out of four using that criteria. And it's to the point where 'experts' aren't even looking at Field's tape or talking about it while simultaneously breaking down every single second of every play Wilson has played this past season. Regardless, maybe I'm wrong and it's not a race thing. But Fields had demonstrated the ability to read defenses and process information just as good, if not better than Wilson in a tougher conference and on the national stage. But it's still questioned because he threw three picks and scored three touchdowns + almost 400 yards of total offense against Indiana? It's not like this is the first time a black quarterbacks intelligence has been questioned. Quick story - I had a friend that played minor league baseball for nearly a decade before calling it quits. The treatment of high profile white players was that they could become stars and the face of the league if they kept themselves out of trouble and made it to the big leagues as stars. Players of other races didn't get that pep talk or treatment.
The hype from the media has little, if anything, to do with the racial make up of these QBs, and more to do with them trying to avoid being embarrassed like they were with Mahomes. Sure, there's inherent racism and bias in America, but sports is the one area where race is trumped by athletic ability. And why not direct your complaint towards Lawrence, the epitome of the white, privileged demi-god? He's been placed on a pedestal for three years now, and virtually guaranteed a bust in Canton by everyone, even though on close inspection he isn't as perfect as he's advertised? The bias you're complaining about is equaled by your own bias.
What if it it’s not based on color and based on the fact that Fields has played for only 1 1/2 years and has had it very easy as a QB. Maybe it’s a Geno Smith situation all over again. Geno had three amazing college football years and while he was thought of as a first round talent QB he had it very easy as a QB in West Virginia. No one thought he could ever not make it but slowly teams that had video on him were not completely sold on him. Honestly I don’t think Fields is ready this year, he needs to stay in college and play one more year of college ball. I’m not sold on any QB that has only played 1 1/2 years of college ball.
I think it's a bit easier for quarterbacks with superb running athleticism to make the jump than it is for those who don't have that trait. Their first two seasons can look more like Josh Allen's than not. For what it's worth, he had more attempts than Wentz and Cam Newton, 31 less attempts than Josh Allen, 20 less attempts than Brady and 47 less attempts than Rodgers. I'm in agreement that I'd also prefer more experience. But in a wonky year, I'll look at the production, physical traits and potential over anything else. This would've been a much bigger 1A/1B type of discussion with him versus Lawrence if the Big Ten would've gotten off their high horse and rolled a normal season for these kids like the SEC, Big 12 and ACC did (and G5's). I also think the pro ready phrase is way overused. You don't need him to be "pro ready" this year to take you to the Super Bowl. You need him to develop into a good passer even if it means sitting for a year. And he has the skills to do so.
fwiw, i think pro days are lame dont watch.. i remember watchung sam and thinking... he's playing catch, so what.... my first and last pro day viewing
In the end, the drafting rank does not matter. Actually it never did. The NFL has evolved significantly in term or racial prejudice the past decade. I have never seen as many black QB in the league as of now. Fields is not immune to critics too. He is not the perfect QB and he has many things to still learn. He is a physical freak tough and he will have chip on his shoulder if he drops just like it did for Rodgers. Could actually be benifical for him as he could go to a team that is better and more structured. Don't forget that Lawrence objective will be to make the Jaguars relevant.. that is a huge task. Same with the player the Jets draft, he will have to turn around a franchise that has been irrelevant for so long. My belief is that all the media that are very close to pro scouting community are hearing more whispers on Wilson than on Fields at this moment. So they are as pointing out trying to save face and put Wilson higher on their list. Actually that's why I liked about Simms draft list he was not basing his ranking based on media consensus. He did his own assessment based on his own view of every QB in the draft. If he is wrong he will look ridiculous and his reputation will take a hit but so far he has been surprisingly good on his assessment from prior years. Actually everybody have their opinion. Yesterday I read draft list that had Wilson has the 4th QB in the draft and the description of him was based on the level of the opponent he has faced and not his actual play. The ranking are all over the place with no consensus other than there seem to be a distinct top 5 QB. Unlike many around here, I have Wilson rated higher but I will not be in complete panic or sad if we select Fields. I actually would be very happy to have a beast like him on the Jets. Final word, it seems like the critics of Wilson lately have been more asasine, it is not more based on tapes/talent but more on his skin color which is ridiculous.
It's ridiculous? You just compared him to Cam Newton because he looks the same when their play style is nowhere near similar. Another poster suggest he bulks up and runs an RPO offense. His decision making is consistently questioned despite the fact that he owns one of the best touchdown to interception ratio single season mark in the history of the sport. I don't think you're racist. Nor do I think sports media is inherently racist or franchises for that matter But it's a bit curious to see that most black quarterbacks get grouped together with the same flaws even if they're different. You just did it with the Cam Newton comparison and don't even realize it.
it's true and the fields lovers will hate me for it but there is a reason he's slipping and at this point going to be the 4th QB off the board
