Processing speed didn’t keep him on the bench at UGA. Seniority did. Folks at UGA will tell you he was the clear cut best QB in the spring going into that year. Let’s not make stuff up.
The UGA spring game was televised. Fields looked like the best QB in a very talented and crowded QB room. I think you might be able to find it on YouTube.
Just something I read. I did not make it up. I have nothing against Fields, I do not like his release and stays on his first read way to long and bails when it is not open. This might be the offense design but a quick release and quick decision making is why I am gun shy of Fields. The guy is as physically gifted as TL if not more.
UGA didn't have the same scheme or coaching. This was not the reason for his issues at UGA. You got to understand that this is not the NFL. OSU coached him to play a certain way, to play to his strength as an athlete, and to play to the strength of the scheme. Going through multiple reads was not a common task that was coached with Ryan Day's spread offense scheme. I don't get why people keep assuming these things, most of these perceived issues with "reading a defense" stems from what was being asked of him to do. He wasn't being asked to be a traditional drop back QB In that scheme that required 3-4 progression reads every play.
Isn't it natural to question whether a guy can go through reads in the faster NFL when he didn't have to do it in college? We're not saying he's incapable of doing it but not having had to do it is certainly a valid concern. It takes a lot of practice to get good at going through progressions, even more so when that practice needs to be done in the NFL instead of getting it out of the way in college where the game is slower.
No one said that it wasn't a "massive decision," and of course, it would be better if the CS buys into the GM's vision, but his job and career are on the line. If I was JD, I'm not putting my career on the line on what some rookie OC wants or some former DC wants in a QB. If I'm the GM, I'm the expert in evaluating personnel, not them. The decision would be mine. If they didn't like it, there's a door they can walk out of.
I remember that you have said this before. I'm not assuming anything. I believe what you said. Having to make the switch to having to drop back and go through progressions on reads, however in the NFL is likely going to be huge, and will take him a while to adjust. We have no way of knowing if Fields will be able to process quickly and make good, quick decisions. He didn't always make the best decisions at OSU on the few reads he had to read. There is also the long slow delivery which could make him more susceptible to taking hits or getting sacked, and supposedly causes accuracy problems on shorter passes for him. Wilson doesn't have any of those issues. He is more NFL ready
Not ever. We are fans, we all have different preferences, but that all stops when whoever we pick becomes a Jet. Then we root for him to be a big success and put our preferences in the back burner.
Wilson absolutely does have some of those issues. I strongly encourage you to watch some games from his 2019 season. He was confused In several games. The Washington and Hawai games stuck out the most for me. 2019 he actually played against decent competition and looked awful for most of that year. Even this Covid ridden season showed that Wilson has decision and accuracy issues as well. I truly don't understand the hype. As far as progressions go, this isn't a heavily relied on trait for college QBs. It's not uncommon for most QBs to come from college with a minimal background In progressive reads. Again. I hope I'm wrong but I feel like we are going to pass on another star QB, while we take another dud. It's stressful to me. ..and I don't get the more NFL ready statement. What's that based on? Fields has far and away the better statistical career. Was touted as being on par with Trevor Lawrence from the gate, with both of them being heavily recruited due to their extreme talents. They both have shown, over and over, against good competition that they are capable. TL and JF. Wilson has showed inconsistent QB play against much worse competition, on a far more consistent basis. TL and JF have even one up'd each other In the playoffs. From a fundamental standpoint. It's not even close to me personally. Idk. I guess time will tell.
Incidentally, even though I was the one that brought the CS preference comment based on something I read, I must clarify it and say I have found zero real evidence beyond a cavalier comment by the Post to indicate that to be true or that they were at odds. Media assumption at best.
Huh? They are not the same scheme at all. First of all. Second of all, I didn't say there was an issue. I think Fields Is more than capable of playing In a WO Shanahan system? What are you on about, I don't get If you miss read my post, or?
I have watched every game from both 2019 and 2020 for Wilson that I can find. The thing you either don't know or have forgotten is that Wilson had surgery on the torn labrum in this throwing shoulder in January of 2019. His arm was in a sling for 6 weeks. He missed their spring camp. I'm not sure if spring practice is the same, but I think it probably is, and I think he probably missed the first 3 games of that season as he only played 9 games in 2019, and more than likely his arm didn't feel normal and he was struggling to regain strength and his form. Every QB occasionally misses some throws but to say that Wilson has accuracy issues is patently false, as is decision issues. Is there room for improving upon his decisions? Yes. As I have said, he isn't perfect, but he or Jones are by far the best 2 QBs in this draft class in that regard. This is NOT HYPE!!!! This is my opinion and what I have seen with my own eyes in watching QBs for 55 years in the NFL and college, studying his game videos, all of the analysis videos of Wilson and the other top QB prospects. I'm sorry, but imo Fields isn't even close to being as good a QB as Wilson. He's a better athlete, and if he can learn all that Wilson already knows, he could be better in a few years, but right now, he's not close. Wilson being more NFL ready is based on his ability read Ds, go through his progressions, anticipate throws, his accuracy, his feel for the position, his feel for the rush, and his refinement in playing QB. Fields has to learn to read Ds and go through his progressions, he has to fix his accuracy on short passes and perhaps tweak/alter his long throwing motion. He has to work on his decision making moreso than Wilson. We'll just have to agree to disagree because I don't agree with any of the rest of your post. The competition thing is nonsense imo. There have been many, many small school players at all positions who have come into the NFL and played at a very high level. If a QB can throw dimes 50 yards downfield and throw the ball into tight windows at any level, he can do it at other levels.
Yeah. Agree to disagree because I don't agree with most of your assessment of Wilson. I do not excuse Wilson's 2019 season either. It's still relevant. Anyway. Looks like you're going to get your wish. I hope you're right. I really do. I truly hope we aren't passing on someone better and do get the best QB available. I truly do.
I didn't say that Wilson's 2019 season wasn't relevant. I think he learned a lot that season, worked hard, and got better, and that's why he was so much better in 2020. Still, the shoulder surgery had to have affected him a lot. I've had rotator cuff surgery, which is worse, but know what it did to my arm and shoulder. I'm amazed that Wilson was able to play at all in 2019 and play as well as he did. Hey, I hope I'm right too, for all of our sake. If JD takes Fields, no one will root harder for Fields, and I'll gladly be wrong if Fields proves me wrong and is good immediately. I'd rather be wrong and JD be right, than the opposite. I want the Jets to win. To be sure, I respect your opinion. We usually agree, and I'm a little puzzled why we disagree so much on this, but I think at least part of it could be your OSU bias, but I could be wrong. Either way, it's fine. We both just want what we think is best for the Jets.
He didn't exactly thrive against the one quality opponent he played in 2020 though, and they were 9 1/2 point favorites over Coastal Carolina.
