I’ve been pretty enamored with Saleh, this seems like a letdown. I know that’s completely irrational though as this guy seems more highly sought after than Saleh.
While I agree that hard working smart people are more likely succeed I strongly disagree with focusing on the their offensive and defensive rankings. Being a good coordinator does not mean one is a good leader. The most important qualities in a head coach is not Xs and O's but the leadership qualities I listed in the previous post. There are lots of smart Mangini type coordinators that should never ever get near a HC job. I am glad Douglas seems focused on leadership qualities and not the hot coordinator flavor of the month.
I don't think anyone is denying that you can win with a strong run game and defense. The argument is just that over the last decade or two the vast majority of teams that consistently do well are the ones with elite passing games. That's the common denominator among most of them.
Son of FedEx founder. Rich kid who got opportunities that he wouldn't have otherwise gotten. Then stumbled into Derrick Henry. I'm not impressed. Probably will hit it off with Chris Johnson though
Also my concern. He also comes from an incredibly wealthy family. That concerns My concerns are similar. I just fail to see how Smith (given his families background) can relate to the modern NFL player. As a coordinator it doesn’t matter as much, but HC is a much different role.
Here's an article from the Chargers angle: https://boltbeat.com/2021/01/11/la-chargers-arthur-smith-titans/ And here's video from a Jets slanted source just this week: Pay attention at the about the 4:45 mark, and his comment about "genius" coaches (he mentions no names). I like Smith. I prefer Pederson because I prefer a successful HC who has already done the job. I also like Saleh. The only question I have with Smith is can he attract the right/best CS under him? But as far as being the architect of an effective offense, there is no question. He is the polar opposite of Gase with a much more simplified, but "ruthlessly efficient" scheme, and if they're going to keep Darnold, or even if they draft a new QB, that is much more promising than the "genius" - i.e. too fucking complicated for anyone less than Peyton Manning to execute.
I've also seen this spun the other way to be fair. Guy wouldn't have to do anything his entire life and he'd still be set, yet he chooses to work a demanding job in the NFL anyway because he loves it so much. I'm not sure which I agree with but just saying.
Yeah thats a good point I guess. I just don't see him connecting with the players, they will have nothing in common. You are out there busting your ass getting hurt for a guy who's doing it as a hobby
Great video. Thank you for posting. It makes me more excited about Smith. What I really find interesting is whether it is Smith or Saleh we will likely run the same Shanahan type offense. Douglas seems to have identified the type of team he wants to build along with type of coach that suits that personnel. The biggest concern from the video is Smiths lack of connections and inability to assemble a staff. Which might have been the purpose of the Glenn and Lewis interviews to add one of those as DC. Sign me up for either Saleh or Smith.
I agree, but the elite passers are all HOF FQB that have been developed by a good offensive coach. Lets get someone who can put the scheme in place and let JD find the FQB as the cherry on top of a well built scheme. Draft Wilson who reminds me of a smaller Justin Herbert and let Arthur go to school with him.
If this were true, wouldn't this hold true in all the 14 years he's been coaching football? He's been with the Titans for 9 years and is one of the most sought after coaches on the list. He has 4 more interviews scheduled after the Jets. If your comment were true about the players, wouldn't he have been shit for all that time? All the players on the Titans loved him from everything I read. In fact, Delanie Walker was shocked when he found out who his dad was because he was so down to earth and carried himself nothing like a "rich kid". Again, I don't know much about him, but he is a big time prospect for all of these teams right now
Do you see a Terrell Davis, Emmitt Smith, or even a Derrick Henry anywhere on this roster? What does that matter If you don't have that luxury anyways? Is It possible we get a workhorse, top tier back, sure... Does that mean we are going to the SB? Nope. Last I checked, It's more of a rarity than a certainty that a strong running game will get you to the SB. The league has evolved, by far, and It's obviously very pass dependent now. Also.. He has proved that he can be successful on OFFENSE for that TEAM. This Is not an automatic thing where his scheme and philosophy works anywhere he goes with any roster he has. The biggest thing though (I think this is what you are failing to grasp), Is that most of us fans don't just want someone that Is good at coaching the offensive side of the ball. I think most of us are perfectly fine with finding a really good OC to run the offense, while having a HC that runs this team and Is a natural leader. A guy who has connections and will bring In a SB caliber type of coaching staff with him/her. I don't think I'm on board with thinking Smith Is that guy, who has these connections, who Is a leader of men, and will take charge of an entire team In the way that we need. I think he is a more than capable OC, I'm not sure he Is HC material. That's the point. Sometimes you gotta look at more than just the obvious to see the big picture my friend.
I’m sorry, but some of the comments about his background and not relating to players couldn’t be further from the truth. Watch the video at least from someone who knows of him professionally. Players love him and respect him. He is humble and extremely well prepared. Been in the NFL for a long time, grew thru the ranks, and no one knew shit about his background till recently. When are we going to judge a person on facts and merit and not on supposition. This is not the hobby job some here project him as having at all.
Titans have the benefit of Mike Vrabel, a former player, as the head man. We wouldn't have that luxury here. Maybe what I said about Smith is dead wrong, I hope so because im not really hating on the guy, frankly its not right to think that way but unfortunately people/ players do. I could just see that being an issue. Especially here, trying to replace Gase
that's all really just one argument- Tanny is a good PA passer when he plays with Derrick Henry. Smith didnt "develop" Tanny anymore than he "developed" Mariota.
Well the fact that he's the virtual opposite of Gase in terms of his offensive philosophy is a great argument for him. I do wonder if he's really HC material - as I do about EVERY coordinator - and also what kind of CS he can put together, but I like the fact that he's been involved with all facets of the teams he's been with, and also that he was retained by 4 Titans HCs' PLUS LaFleur wanted to take him to GB with him. And the fact that he's the only candidate that's on every team's list. I'm not banging the table for him - again I prefer a veteran, successful HC like Pederson - but he's on my short list.
