Agreed, it will be very interesting to see what the FO does with Penny/Clemens. I don't think they want to have Clemens sit another year, but the way Chad's played this year they can't just hand Kellen the job.

 

The great thing about it, is that if Clemens never plays, then they didn't gamble away a top five first round pick, on a player they may have not needed.

This draft is looking to be excellent, with damn near every player getting involved.

I say that they keep Chad around and go into training camp next year with a battle for the QB spot. A battle that is Chad's to lose mind you...

I doubt our FO's plans are so inflexible. They preach about seizing opportunity and adapting every week, and they pigeonhole the future of the QB position so rigidly? I think they are ecstatic that Chad could perform this year and help a rebuilding team into position to play football in January. That must be one solid platinum, jewel encrusted monkey wrench they got there.

 

Less talent on both sides of the equation, but yeah it's a similar battle.

One huge difference is that Chad is not a free agent next year. The Chargers got lucky and had the situation sort itself out for them.

 

I thought Chad was going to be worse... but i still dont think he is a superstar. A part of me kind of didnt want him to be as good as he is because that would mean we would have to have a plan of starting a new qb. With Chad's success Im not sure that you could say he isnt successful and try out for a new starter, Clemens or others. So the big decision is to continue with Chad, who may or may not have what it takes to win a superbowl, or find a superstar

 

Phillip Rivers sat on the bench for two full years. No reason Kellen can't - it won't hurt his development. And assuming Kellen is the number two qb next year, what really are the odds that CP will have another injury free year?

One thing is for certain: if this is a "monkey wrench" in the FO's plans, it's a good problem to have and it never hurts to have too much talent. This coaching staff will be forced to make some very tough decisions, but I have much more confidence in this CS under Mangini than I had with Herm.

TC will bring a whole new round of competition for the job, but I'm anxious to see if Pennington's arm can actually improve in strength in the off-season. What about that? No one has even taken that into consideraton! What if Pennington goes into serious weight training now and comes out with a stronger arm, disspelling all the critics (including me) who say, "I like his leadership, I like his mentality, his intelligence, his feistiness, etc., if only he didn't have that noodle arm." Well, what if he shows up in TC with a stronger arm?

We could have a hell of a season next year with Clemens sitting on the bench, and who would have ever imagined that?

 

Im a big Chad guy. But lets be honest, he is one fall away from breaking into a million pieces. And if, KClem has to sit for 3 years (like Chad) did -- there is nothing wrong with that.

 

Yes, if Brees was a shitty quarterback who barely managed to NOT cost the Jets games, Pennington is like Brees.

 

What has happened to you?
This QB, as UNC has pointed out, has won here consistently. Ill drag you back in my time machine and make you watch Richard Todd throw to anyone wearing any type of Jersey or Ken OBrien set the NFL record for most games by a QB without a rushing TD.

Amount of playoffs in the 70's = 0
Amount of playoffs in the 80's = 3
Amount of playoffs in the 90's = 2
Amount of playoffs with CHAD = 2 out of 4 years (both years he was healthy and now looking like 3 out of 5)

 

I believe that Chad is our present qb and will remain so. That being said, due to his numerous surgeries his career won't go on as long as it may have been. I think he has another 2 or 3 years of being effective before his shoulder starts to give way again (and that may be generous). God willing nothing happens to the guy cause he certainly doesn't deserve it. I see the Jets keeping Clemens in the wings (the same as they did with Pennington) and letting him learn from the qb. If something happens to Pennington then Clemens may get a jump start on the position.

 

And like I said in the other thread, two shoulder surgeries later and he can't make those key throws. He went from a QB who could win you games to a QB who could make some mind numbingly horrible passes that cost teams games.

 

Richard Todd and Kenny O'Brien were painful years indeed.

 

He made key throws on Monday. Next time you watch the game, turn off the sound.
