I have not heard that the jets have asked permission to interview Ravens DC Don Martindale. But I know Douglas has ties to the Ravens organization, and, yes, I think that counts. And with what I read about the jets wanting a CEO type of coach, I don't think offense v. defense specialty of the new hire will be dispositive. Another factor is that Douglas might see Martindale as someone who can motivate a guy like CJ Mosely, who already has collected tens of millions from the jets but has paid back squat (partially because of injury). Martindale coached LBs and the defense when Mosely was with Ravens, and I read that Mosely really likes and respects Martindale. I am not advocating Martindale as coach, nor am I suggesting Douglas would ever pick a coach because of one guy on your roster. Just throwing this out there for thought. I think many of us are expecting the jets to go only for former offensive coordinator with the new hire, to help Sam or new QB I am not sure that will be the case. It is early, but who do you guys think Douglas might hire? Who do your prefer?
Good, thoughtful post. My order of preference is Brian Daboll, Matt Campbell, Arthur Smith. I want no part of Wink Martindale. For starters, he's 57, and I don't want a HC that old. One of the Jets' biggest problems over the years has been all the turnover in GMs and HCs and CSs. Douglas is young enough that he could be here 30 years if he wanted to be (he's 44-45). Brian Daboll is 45, Matt Campbell is 41, Arthur Smith is 38. Any of those three could be here with Douglas at least 15-20 years if not 30 and give the Jets something they've never had in the history of the franchise...stability. That's why the Steelers are so good. It's what other great teams have had for 7-10 year windows. I want something built here that will last. It's a generality, but younger people are often more energetic and creative/imaginative, and I think the Jets need that, and they may be better able to relate to today's players than an older coach like Martindale. I know that the Jets are looking for a CEO to establish the culture here. IMO it would be difficult for a former DC, even if unintentionally, to not put an emphasis on D in FA and the draft, and on wanting the Jets' identity to be as a great defensive team. That's why I'm not interested in any of the DCs. Any or all of them could become very good, or even great HCs, but I want the Jets' identity to be a high flying, exciting offensive team, like the Rams were when they were the "Greatest Show on Turf" with Kurt Warner and all those great receivers and offensive players., and more importantly, like the Jets were with Joe Willie Namath.
I know the question was not directed at me, but I honestly don’t want Bienemy. Firstly, he’s a former RB, not a QB. They don’t see the game the same way. Secondly, it’s super hard to know how much of that KC success is coming from him. I think that offense is all Reid, and then made special by Mahomes. It’s not impossible that Bienemy has had a huge hand in it, but honestly I think that offense would be just as good with or without him. on the other hand, that Reid tree has been pretty good too, hasn’t it? Certainly better than Belichick’s tree. I guess I’d be ok interviewing him, but that hire wouldn’t have me jumping cartwheels....
Not excited by Martindale. Smells like Rex Ryan 2.0. Old school. I'm sure he's a good DC, and maybe he could be a good HC somewhere, but I don't think it's a good fit for the Jets right now. Lots of people are skeptical about Bienemy here. But I would be happy to have him.
Rex/Vic Fangio/Gregg Williams 2.0 Old school, brash, defensive coordinator. Doesn’t strike me as the “CEO” type the Jets are reportedly looking for. Also OP: CJ Mosley is a sunk cost. He is not going to factor into the decision-making of the next head coach.
Initially. Not now. As an OC, he has no real body of work. We don't know what he's done in KC and what he hasn't done. If JD interviews him, likes and wants to hire him, so be it, I'll hope for the best.
I’ll take Wink in a heartbeat the guy literally had to transform the Ravens D that has been top 5 since he took over. I think if he can transform our D and add a quality OC like Anthony Lynn we would have a great base to rebuild this franchise
No problem with this at all if JD thinks he's the right fit and can be a true HC. Would not mind seeing Caldwell involved as well. QB coach and Asst HC perhaps, rather than OC.
I like Wink but I just hope he’s in to analytics and being super aggressive on offense...He just strikes me as a guy who will “rely on the defense” and punt on 4th and short down 6 with 3 minutes left Maybe I’m wrong though
Interesting. When I first contemplated this post, my order of preference was Smith first and Daboll second. So we are fairly close on that. Had not factored in Campbell, maybe because I thought he would reject offer. I really like your analysis about the younger the better, energy, etc. LOL, kinda reminds me that back in 1990 the Patriots made greybeard Rod Rust their head coach. Rust was 62, but I thought he looked a lot older than that. The Pats finished 1-15 that year and fired Rust after one season.
2 years under Rex the defenses were good, once opposition caught onto his blitz scheme the remaining 4 years of his tenure his defenses were below average.
I know fans want an offensive minded HC/CEO. But unless we're gonna get our own Patrick Mahomes or Arron Rogers and put up 40 points at will, we better have the defense to slow those dudes down.
Below average Isn't really true though. My point though. Ryan as a DC of the Ravens averaged In the top 3 In the league during his tenure. I think he only fell to 8th total defense In that span? Maybe higher, I know It was In the top 10. He obviously had some good defense with the Jets as well. I'm not a fan of Dan Martindale. He hasn't done anything that we haven't seen already with someone else at HC. I don't really want Sexy Rexy back as our HC. However, I loved him as our HC. I thought he deserved better than he got. That's all.
Except Adam Gase Isn't good enough to even hold Andy Reids' clipboard to even try to make that kind of comparison. I'll take Andy Reids' recommendation all day long. That's just speculation and assumptions. None of us truly know just how good EB actually Is, except for those closest to the team. Like... Reid and Mahommes. To me. That says a lot In Itself. Hell, Watson Is throwing a tantrum because Houston wont even interview the guy. Anyway... That comparison doesn't make sense to me.
There are options for us to do just that this offseason. Our team will change In a significant way this upcoming offseason. No sense trying to limit yourself on the current roster before It's changed.
