Nothing wrong with talking to him. If this is really going to be an extensive search, Douglas should talk with as many people as possible.

I disagree. The more people he talks to, the longer it takes. The longer it takes, candidates will start getting hired out from under them. It also will make it more confusing and exhausting. I think they should have a short list of no more than 6 names.

They've already said that it's going to take a while regardless, so might as well cast a wider net. I get the feeling that they're not necessarily going to be as zeroed in on the supposed top candidates as we might think, or like, them to be.

If Douglas is as great as we all think that he is, then I trust him to talk to the people he thinks are worthwhile to talk to.

It depends on how attractive the Jets job is, so if it’s high on the candidates list it may not be a big deal at all. I also believe Douglas has good reason for any interview they request.

I guess I agree. I'm just excited and want to know who the new HC will be. LOL I don't want another team to hire a guy that I'd like us to hire.

You're right. I'm sure he has a good reason. It's probably actually better to not rush, especially since this is Douglas first rodeo. I'm just excited. There are also 3 candidates who are my favorites and I don't want them to get hired by another team before JD decides.

He also gushed about Adam Gase, so that's pretty meaningless.

Daboll is a huge no from me. Allen becoming great is great for him, but how much can we attribute that to Daboll? Dude has been around forever and nobody really was clamoring to make him a head coach when he was Mangini's OC in Cleveland or our QB coach and the stellar job he did molding Kellen Clemens.

We can attribute most of that success, because the system is everything for QBs, and Daboll built his system around Allen's talents. If Daboll had been like Gase and insisted that Allen had to fit his system, then Allen might have been the bust that many thought he was going to be.

As the old saying goes, you can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear, or maybe this one is better: "You can't make chicken salad out of chicken shit." You're seriously bashing Daboll because Kellen Clemens didn't develop into anything special? SMH

The NFL is evolving. For a long time Coordinators had their system and the expectation was that players had to learn to fit the coordinator's system. That's why we've seen so many very talented collegiate players bust in the NFL. They were drafted by the wrong teams and put in systems that didn't fit their talents and mindsets. Some NFL Coordinators are finally wising up. Daboll is one of the few. They're adapting their systems to fit the talents of their players and they're getting better results.

The Clemens bashing was more of a reminder that he worked here and was pretty nameless. I get what you're saying and if Daboll is evolving then great for him and I wish him success. I guess I don't want to be the internship program for another coordinator (though to be honest I said the same last time around and we didn't hire one and wound up with the worst option imaginable). Maybe I'm not gonna be pleased with this hire just because of the specifics I want in a coach. I don't want a coordinator, I want someone who has run the whole thing. I also don't want a retread like Marvin Lewis or Caldwell, so it really limits the options to college coaches or coaches who have had success in the NFL but aren't coaching in it right now (basically Cowher & Harbaugh) or somehow pry away a coach from another team (my dream get was Payton but he signed an extension last year so it ain't happening).

I totally understand your not wanting a coordinator. It's certainly not ideal, but at least Daboll has been around a good while and has lots of experience. He has coached under some very good HCs, and he's still pretty young (45 I think, so if successful can be here a long time and we can finally have some stability). He's certainly a better prospect imo than Arthur Smith who has only been an OC for 2 years, Eric Bieniemy who has never called plays and who may not have really done anything in KC, or Joe Brady, who has only been an OC for two years, and one of those was in college at LSU.

Harbaugh would be a disaster. Cowher could be too, but I'd hire him over Harbaugh 100 times out of 100. I think he's too old and wouldn't be here that long.

IMO the best college HCs that might have interest are Matt Campbell, Pat Fitzgerald, and P.J. Fleck. I don't think Lincoln Riley or David Shaw would have any interest in the Jets' job.

Yup Campbell or Fitzgerald are my favorites. Want nothing to do with Bienemy for the exact reason you mentioned. He's riding Reid's coattails there. If we had to go the coordinator route then you could do worse than Daboll I guess given what you've said.
