These last 2 games shouldn't move the needle on Sam starting for us next year. We need to move on and either go with a vet or a rookie who will be given every chance to succeed.
And he looked like shit. But guess what he has Austin Hooper and Two starting RBs. All three full upgrades over what the Jets have. not even close. I can *almost* argue he still has a better offense than the Darnold has without his 4 top WRs + Odell. LOL. Think about it. Chubb, Hunt and Hooper Gore, Perine, Mims, Crowder, Perriman... Jets get the slight edge. SLIGHT. Dude imagine with all 4 Top WRs...that's how bad this roster is. I mean you guys must be smoking rocks if you can't see this comparison. But, But Darnold sucks... No QBs without weapons play like shit. Look at the stats against the Giants with a full cast. in the same building last week. Come on guys! Wake up.
I think you’re misunderstanding what I’m saying. Saying Sam doesn’t miss checkdowns is a response to Sanchez being better than Darnold. One could make the argument that there are extenuating circumstances why Sam sucked this season, so I could see JD sticking with him, it’s an option. It’s not the best option, imo, and there are others, but I could see it happening. I’m of the opinion it’s probably better to let him go and pick up a qb, but saying Sanchez was better is crazy talk.
It’s not crazy at all. They are very similar in almost every fashion. Sanchez also never had elite talent on offense. He had a few big names that weren’t in their primes outside of 1 year when he had Braylon Edwards and a better Oline but as a Qb pound for pound, they are both just bad NFL QBs. The stats speak for themselves. Sam will go the route of Sanchez and his ceiling is a NFL backup Qb.
It is crazy, because Sanchez had a super bowl caliber team. It doesn’t matter if it had big names or not off the strength of how far they got in the playoffs....and they almost made it to the super bowl twice. The first year, the team carried Sanchez...not the other way around. You don’t need big names to get to the super bowl, you need a solid team. Sanchez had a solid team. Sanchez was always in the role of game manager and then eventually he couldn’t even do that. I can’t stress this enough....he was missing check downs. Not the receiver missing the catch or dropping it. He was straight up missing....a check down. I don’t know who he was banging at the time but they must’ve had that good good. Darnold on the other hand has been surrounded by a lot of practice squad level talent. Yes, he makes bone headed plays. But hear me out....and I think this is why people are in the “keep him” camp: He hasn’t had much opportunity to shine like Sanchez did. He isn’t a game manager, he’s a sandlot styled QB that is good at improvising. Somehow, he ended up with a coach that doesn’t see that, won’t let him even audible the play if he sees something wrong, and tried to make him a stand in the pocket, no matter what and pass qb and done nothing to develop his strengths because that would mean he would have to just let him play. This has obviously had an effect on him and you can see it in how he plays, he’s hesitant even when he has an open receiver. He straight up looks confused sometimes but he can still throw a check down.
The Sam Darnold of 2020 is a game manager. He wasn’t in 2019 and 2018 but that’s what he has regressed to. There’s no shame in admitting the obvious here. Just look at the sample size and the YPA. He isn’t taking many chances and the coaching staff is terrified to let him now because he is a turnover waiting to happen this year. If you put Darnold on the same team, the results would arguably be the same. Even if someone were to buy your sandlot style argument, this is the NFL. You can’t throw backyard QBs into the mix and roll out every other play. In case you missed it, 3 of his rollouts resulted in throw aways because teams are prepared for that now and the edge guys aren’t biting on the designed rollouts. Gase is trying to call more and more plays for him. There’s only so much you can do for someone who is limited and isn’t very good at reading defenses.
Just for fun: Mark Sanchez career averages: 57% completion 6.6 Y/A 86 TD 89 INT Sam Darnold career averages: 60% completion 6.6 Y/A 44 TD 37 INT Basically the same guy.
Lets relax on that...Sanchez had a color coded system created for him and a stacked offense around him. Yet he was so below average...he did shine in the playoffs a bit but he really didn't belong in the league. Darnold probably would have taken those 2009 and 2010 teams to the Super Bowl
I agree, Sam is better than Sanchez was. I think it's closer than a lot of people would think though.
Sanchez had a superbowl caliber team around him... the only reason it appears to be close is because he sucked. better line, rb’s, receivers and a great defense to boot. LT/Shonn Green (was a beast) at RB Holmes, Edwards, Cotchery at WR, Keller at TE Brick/Mangold (probowlers), Brandon Moore (probowler) On defense - Revis, Cromartie, Calvin Pace, Brian Thomas, Bart Scott, Shaun Ellis
As an aside... champ being a fake persona was proven wrong a long time ago. He just knows how to play this board like a fiddle.
Maybe but it changes on a dime, look at Bills who before the 18 draft can’t imagine many thought would be the team to develop Allen and he reach his potential with them. It takes the right GM, HC and CS. I believe JD can be the right GM, we’ll see what he does with the CS and what he puts around whomever the QB is.
No argument in that, but we have the fuck up brothers in charge, we can but hope that they let JD pick his own HC who then picks his own men around him and we can become a proper franchise for the next 10+years or so. Yes, the Bills have shown what you can do and with a so-called sub-standard QB, between him and Jackson as the best of that draft class now, not many wanted either of them lol what do we know eh?
I like Darnold and I guess I'm a guilty Sam supporter but I do think if you want to make an anti-Sam argument his deep(er) throws are the best fodder for being negative on him. There hasn't been much deep throw magic over his 3 seasons and what I would professionally describe as "too many" of his long throws seem badly off the mark. Now of course his almost entire tenure has been behind a horrendous protection system. And some of those throws were off the mark because he needed another heartbeat of time and just didn't get it but still.... The long game hasn't been good at all so far.
Would it increase Darnolds value to sign him to a team friendly contract NOW and if he plays OK next season he can be traded somewhere else and we can move on. If he okays really well we have him in the cheap.
